Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. Funding the training is harder than learning to fly. After all these years I am so close I can taste it!
So you're an FO with MQ huh? I work the ramp for Eagle at MAF saving up for flight school. I wish you the all the best with your flying career and hope to see you out this way sometime soon. Tim
I am thinking of changing careers at 41 years old making 60,000-70,000/year to get into commercial aviation... Am I crazy?
None of the talk about the down side of the Airline biz scares me away from persuing this dream. I have been fascinated by Aviation since I was a kid but got into other types on business...
So, from you experienced pilots regional and otherwise... Is it worth it???
I'm not very close to becoming an airline pilot as a 14 year old but I think that if you'd be more happy doing aviation go for it. I'm picking an airline career not for the pay but for the love of it and i know if i do it until i get old and die then i'll die happy, so i think it's all about living a happy life but i'm no airline pilot quite take care and happy flying
Wait are you saying you want to start flying for the airlines at the age 41? If so, its waaay to late for you to start to learn to fly and get a job at a REGIONAL AIRLINE. Plus you wont see 60,000 even in your dreams. First year f/o is looking at anywere from 17,000 to 20,000 a year if even that...buddy if you want to put food on the table for your family i would strongly advise you to keep whatever job you have before, but that just me 2 cents....
I'm pretty sure he will see $60,000. Upgrade time at most regionals is a few years, or less, and at that point, he could be making, as a captain, $60,000-$80,000. I know a guy who flies for XJT, is a captain, and has been with XJT a total of 6 years, he makes $80,000.
@joseftexas follow what makes you happy, if you dont atleast try you will forever wonder what if.......but be for warned its not a easy path and only do it if thats where your heart truly lies.
@joseftexas Starting off now you will get paid 21,000-22,000 and If you wait out ten years the most you will make as captain is around 58,000 in a regional. You should have switched careers 20 years ago. Sorry man.
@joseftexas Not to end up in a regional unless you have a great nest egg, a wife that wont be able to pull a pool boy while you're gone or no real reason to worry about being home. Regionals are terrible these days.
Don't let people say that you can't do it. I'm 28, flight instructing full time, and it took me 5 years to get through the training, still working on my MEI and have 600 hours total. If you have $30-$40K that you can come up with, fly full time somewhere there's good weather, get everything done in 6 months, then flight instruct for about a year, then apply. Not sure how the hiring will be in a year, but there's movement.
