No CGI, they used dried ice for the smoke under the train, like when at the station, and small oil vaporizers for the smoke stacks.

No, had holes under the tracks and there was little black pipes running under the set and black pipes were on these holes and they were go back to a central point where there was a smoke machine, they would plug the little tube into the end of this smoke machine and it would puff steam through the pipes under the train!
