And as 10chaos01 already stated correctly, the pulse you feel is caused by the pressure, the blood causes when it is rushing through your arterias after the heart contracted and released (heartbeat). For example if you tie a ribbon or something tight enough around your arm, it prevents the blood to reach your wrist and you won't feel any pulse although your heart is still doing fine and otherwhere you'll still be able to feel your pulse without a problem.

Feeling your pulse at the WRIST is done by pointer, middle and ring finger... The pulse you can feel there comes from the arteria radialis whereas you are unable to feel the pulse in any vena. This is why there are only certain spots to check it sufficiently as arterias are usually way more deep inside your body than the venas that run closer to your skin as you can see for example at your hands. Another very common spot to check the pulse (and closer to the aorta and the heart) is the throat.
