  • now that i watched a little more i hear the burstbucker/57 RI combo of pups your using.......

  • hello john, i currently own a 79 es335 pro w/dirty fingers pups & although they are great for rock they are very muddy to my ears & break up too soon. any suggestions as to replacements & not necessarily gibson pups- thanks

  • *plays awesome sounding jazzy solo* ANYWAY

  • good review, but please reduce the rambling

  • hey, amazing video. what song were you playing at the start? thanks

  • I just made it up off the top of my head. Thanks for your interest.

  • You are an amazing player. Now I want a 335 more than ever!

  • i wish i could play a 335, like them alot.but wanna get a decent deal on one and not tooo high priced.

335's are nice totallly classy guitar.

like your style of playing jazzy and melodic.

    really nice.

  • I wanna play like that!

  • Comment removed

  • while majority of fender guitars were played by most alternative and punk rock bands in the early 90's...

  • @hubert6988 is there something wrong with that?

  • @dougthealligator no man... i'm just commenting... that's all...

  • @dougthealligator ok dude no worries, i agree with you i just wasnt sure if you were being negative of sarcastic

  • majority of the gibson guitars played by reggae, soul and jazz musicians....

  • Nice pickin!!!!

  • Not fair, You could play a toy guitar and make it sound great!

  • In your experience (much longer than mine) do you find there to be much of a difference in the construction quality of a solid body and a semi hollow like this? I have a Strat style guitar and I haven't had a single problem with it in terms of build quality. However, I really am still on the hunt for the perfect electric for me. (Found my perfect acoustic, it's a Greg Bennett model, I'd suggest them to anyone). I was either considering an ES 335 or a Les Paul. I am on the road and bus quite oft

  • Good to hear from you.

Go into shops and stores, play and compare as many guitars as you can till the right one pops up.

    Thanks for your interest.

  • @johnhguitar Thanks sir! I will do that! I have a decent amount of mid range guitars, so I'm planning on saving my money and getting a real high end guitar.

  • Do you ever use the Thirty Twelve anymore? It has such lush tone!

  • I was thinking of buying another one. I've been using the Evans 150 but it's only good for jazz. It's not a good blues amp.

I think the Thirty Twelve could do both well. Thanks

  • I can't decide between cherry or black

  • @foodsmighters Pick cherry

  • IVE GOT THIS GUITAR :)

  • NOEL GALLAGHER from Oasis is using that guitar also :P

  • Great playing.

  • Such a great review, thank you for your input & knowledge. Beautiful guitar & beautiful playing as well.

  • Hey i got a BIG WORRY, i have one of these and i have to fix it,whre do i have to open or something to fix it????

  • What's wrong? What's it doing?

  • @emf665 No offence but if you ask like that, you should go to a proffesional.

  • Were can I find tabs for that?

  • Those harp-like sounds you get are fantastic! How do you do them?

  • Check out Lenny Breau.

  • @hjerthinfarkht Also check out Tommy Emmanuel, his version of 'Somewhere over the rainbow' is unbelievable, and he plays an acoustic. I have a reissue Gibson 335 too, it's absolutely beautiful......

  • Would you prefer this or an ibanez artcore?

  • 1:23 *After playing an amazing piece of music* Anyway...

  • I really want to get a semi-hollow but don't know which one is good for me, I would like one with less feedback when the gain/volume is up and still get a nice versatile sound. I've read a few articles and right now im looking at the Epiphone Dot, am I looking in the right direction?

  • @ElNaughtyOttsel

I think the Dot has a fair amount of feedback if your playing rock/metal with the gain really high, it would probably sound the same. I may be mistaken though

  • He is right in saying that is a versatile guitar, if anyone knows Streetlight Manifesto or Catch 22 that is the guitar Thomas K.

  • Does the 335 have a much different tone than a Les Paul? Both with humbuckers and solid body...well, solid core in this case. I would think they would sound almost identical.

  • They are similar but different enough to proceed in manufacturing both of them.

  • FYI your pick guard is coming off

  • @MrDixiepride1234 FYI. You don't know what you're talking about.

  • @MrDixiepride1234 i think thats how its suppose to be

  • haha, how long did it take you to learn that arrangement man?

could spend a few more hours, you need to make it swing ;).

  • Corian is the new material but I wish they still made it with bone

  • want.....mine....back

  • if only i had $2,749.00

  • @xavier3961 I know, right! This is my ultimate guitar. I want one soooooooo bad. Thanks alot, John Mayer. :(

  • i read this has a thin tapered neck, what does that mean? do les pauls have that too?

  • Can the 335 be played like an acoustic guitar like the ES-175 can?

  • No I don't think so.

  • @vipor3D no

  • @vipor3D Of course you can play any guitar acoustically, but the ES 335 does not sound too great that way. Plugged into a nice amp however, you will hear the advantage of the semi acoustic body. A great and very versatile guitar.

  • @vipor3D No. semi-hollow guitars in general are nowhere near as loud as full hollow bodies. Plus, the ES-335 is much thinner than an ES-175. So, it moves less air... and hence is not as loud.

It's loud enough for you to practice without an amp, and that's it.

  • my dad has that guitar

  • Hi John,

I find the neck pickup on my 335 fairly "dark" sounding. It's a 2008 model so it's fairly new. It kind of lacks chime and clarity especially on the low notes. I've tried it through about 10 amps and I always feel like it's darker than it should be. What pickups would you suggest for a classic sound for blues? I'm trying to get away from the mud vibe. Thanks a lot man.

  • For a while Gibson made those reissue 335s with ceramic pickups and they stink. Get the Gibson classic reissue pickups. The Burstbuckers are good too but not really any better in my opinion.

  • @johnhguitar Hey thanks a lot John, I know the problems not in my hands, I can get all my other guitars to sound the way I need just not this one, there's a mud overtone going on that gives me the irrits. By reissues do you mean the 57's? I thought it was hopefully a case of ceramic-problems. I really appreciate your help mate. Thanks.

    Shane

  • @intheblues Yeah, the 57's!

  • @johnhguitar what hollowbody gibson(s) do you recommend?? -much thanks cj

  • @intheblues Some years Gibson put 300K pots in their guitars instead of 500K. This will definitely make the pickup darker. if that's your problem, your looking at $40 for pots vice $100 for a pickup.

  • @intheblues

Hi I was just reading on a Gibson forum about this problem with dull pickups. A lot of them use lower value potentiometers like 300 ohm. If you swap the pot. for a 500 ohm the sound brightens up noticably. Several folk on the forum did this and were glad they didn't go for an un needed expensive pup change.

    Regards

  • What kind of chord does he play first?

  • coolllllllll

  • Love these guitars, I wish this guy would stop playing so damn jazzy on it though, these sound best overdriven and bluesy.

  • @steptoesaunt in your opinion. maybe he likes them better for jazzy tones.

  • I'm getting this guitar in a few months!

  • @johnguitar do u know if this type of guitar was the one chuck berry used? i have a deep pocket and i wanna make it hollow and i aint had a new guitar in 12 years.

    thanks

  • Corian nut, John.

  • I can hear and feel the difference with my eyes closed.

  • @johnhguitar Beautiful sound!

  • Biggest difference between the ES-335 Gibson, and the Epiphone Casino (let's say) is the laminated wood and the price, right????

  • @MrNutmegger1957 no. a better comparison would be the epiphone dot/sheraton. the gibson ES-335 is just all round better quality. that's why people will pay so much more for the gibson.

  • Is this one's deeper than that of an Ibanez AS73?

Looks like it but I can't tell because the binding is deceiving.

  • My Dad sold his for £15 whilst he was drunk in 1983..berk. I wanted a semi hollow last year and ofcourse this is what springs to mind, but I couldnt afford one, so I was thinking of an Epiphone Dot, but then I stumbled across the Ibanez AS73, and I bought one of them, and I have to say I am very impressed. Versatility of semi hollows is only second to fender telecasters.

  • I LOVE YOU DAMN GUITAR, I LOVE YOU ;W;

  • i got myself an epiphone dot...not rich enough

  • Tulips are what the gibson customs have in them LPs 345s 347 355s etc, usually go with the ebony fretboard Those tuners are grover kidneys.

  • Yes,, I Do get the idea! Thanx

  • I'm starting to regret buying the Vintage Sunburst 335, Cherry looks so delicious....

  • tom morello

  • cool guitar---sounds good on the blues stuff

  • Pristine!

  • you play very beautiful! im going to buy a 335 next month, but i'm really not sure, because i play heavy OD sounds, too, and for that a les paul would be better. do you think the 335 will be good at it too?

    greetings from germany! Timo

  • It depends on the money but both the 335 and the LP can be used for rock and jazz but really for me it's the strings you use for either style.

  • @johnhguitar ah really? i have to decide between a ES 335 (Dot, fat neck, what ever) and a Les Paul 58 plain Top, and it's so hard becuase theyre both really neautiful guitars!

  • @johnhguitar which ones do you recommend for jazz then?/ which ones where you using

  • I use a .013 flatwound set for jazz and .010 set for rock and blues. D'Addario and Ernie Balls

  • @johnhguitar and about string preference depending on scale lenghts?

  • @johnhguitar I have a 1990 Cherry dot neck, and I agree with you. It's an extremely versatile guitar. I don't know if I'd recommend it for metal, but it's extremely well suited to just about any type of music you'd want to play.

Sorry John, I was typing when you first started talking about the pups. Did I understand you to say that your neck pup is modified and the bridge pup is the stock Classic '57?

  • if its perfect for anything i have a yamaha pacifica 112 jmx its got custom pickups jimmy page unsigned humbucker + two fender custom shop single coils i dont know if i should preserve this and get a gibson es 335 i need help i play alot of rock and thinking about metal now

  • If you play a 335 thru an amps like Vox AC30 or Fender Twin it will overdrive like crazy. My 1962 335 is far louder than any Strat, Tele or Godin. Find a 335 & play it like crazy in the shop. When I use mine through an AC30 it practically turns the voice coils inside out !. Things to watch for: Kluson machine heads which can be very lose & the bridge with metal saddles which saw through strings. I have a guild starfire roller saddle bridge & Grover machines which keep tune. Good luck finding one

  • @XANKETIMO dude listen to rush, thats got heavy od and he uses a 335 all the time

  • @XANKETIMO

Hey, ich hab eine 535 von Heritage (ES335) und man kann damit so gut wie alles machen. Meine klingt ein bisschen mittig, perfekt für ACDC und so. Aber ich spiel zur Zeit nur Jazz. "This is the most versaitle guitar they ever made" 5:37. Die neuen Gibsons finde ich aber generell nicht so prall; unbedingt vor dem Kauf anspielen!! Die Heritage Gitarren variieren auch sehr stark, klingen aber meiner Meinung nach im Durchschnitt deutlich besser.

    Hanno

  • Hoyt de glackenshpiel. Un Heritage (ES 335 ? Ets noting bet de trurf!

  • oh my god *-*

may i know what to do first if i want playing like your style?(jazz-thing(?))

  • It's nice to someone play a clean guitar in a demo instead of those A**Holes who use overdrive, distortion, and a whold host of effect that cover up the true sound of the guitar. I guess they think that more effects will cover up their lack of talent.

  • I don't know what it is about this John guy, maybe it's his easy going nature, but he really does a nice job with these guit reviews, .....just the right amount of info and playing...very well done mate.

This guy would be a great neighbor....

  • A blues neighbor? A reckless blues musician for a neighbor? Thanks mate! See you in OZ perhaps?

  • @janmurph Oh i wish i had a neighbour like this, teaching me some stuff und jam with me. great guitar btw, im using a epiphone 335, BB king signature. love this shape and sound.

  • Alex Lifeson used a 335 on all those classic Rush albums, right? Which is certainly proof that it can be used for serious rock music.

  • check Mando Diao band, Gustaf Noren plays this guitar, and i think it gives very interesting sharp sound.

  • Should i get this guitar or the gretsch g5120???

  • Thanks for feedback on 137...your 335 and playing is great

  • are hollowbodys good for grunge?im looking at this because i love the look but i want a grunge sound so i wanna go with a fender mustang? i cant decide! lol

  • The 335 has had a bit of history in rock but to the level of punk grunge that you're talking about I can't say.

Any solid body guitar won't feedback as much..

  • @ThePsychoGamer1337 I'd say the ES335 can do grunge very well. check out any Kings of Leon song and pay attention to their guitar work. Its very hollow body type of sounds. Its mean, but soft at the same time, so to speak. Obviously if you wanna have perfect Dime Bag Darell sounds, this isn't the guitar for you

  • @ThePsychoGamer1337 there good for punk check the tom delonge es 333 at guitar center

  • anyone wanting to give feedback....I go to school for jazz studies and have to do jazz standards (Satin Doll, etc). I have choices of..the es 137 at the top of my list, but of course people doing hard sells on Eastmans, Godins, etc. I seem to like the idea that the 137 is versatile. I like the blues (love actually), rock, jazz fusion....any thoughts???

  • There's the 137 custom models that have humbucking pickups that would be better for jazz than the P90s normally found on those instruments. Good luck in your jazz studies.

  • Sweet playing...

Should I get this guitar or the Hofner very thin John Stowell model?

  • I know zip about the other two. Sorry!

  • @1212surface There is a BIG difference between the Hofner thinbody and a 335 in price. If money is an issue then that should answer the question. However, the Epi Casino or Dot's bodies are near exact copies of the Gibson 335 and go for $1500. less!

  • I give up. You are AMAZING.

  • ive got the epiphone equivilant

  • Man that's some beautiful playing. I must ask which you prefer, an es 335 or 175? I understand that they are both different guitars for different things but if you could only keep one which would it be?

  • ......la vogliooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Thanks. Very informative.

  • What's the opening piece? it's beautiful. Especially those plucked harmonic cascades.

  • It's just me improvising.....

  • @johnhguitar wow! really thats amazing, you can make something that beautiful just by having 40+ expireince, what chords do you use, to make that

  • @johnhguitar You Should Tab it

  • i'm trying to get more into travis pickin' and rockabilly/country/jazz styles like chet atkins and brian setzer type stuff. i'm torn between the gretsch 6120 or 335, do you reckon i could do that sort of thing effectively on the 335?

  • I've not seen many people using the 335 for that.

  • @mollers92 go with the gretsch

  • @mollers92 try the epiphone swingster, or ibanez artcore. gretsch..?..take a close look at them! & compare! Unless you can shell out the money for an american made gretsch.

  • how does the ibanez as73 compare to this? in your opinion?

  • I think Ibanez was the first company that came along and gave Gibson a run for their money. There's plenty of professional people playing Ibanez AS-100 and AS-200 guitars. My choice is the Gibson 335.

  • @Lukeyboi14 :I put Seymour duncan humbuckers into an AS73 and have had it set up for 10's or 11's by an expert . Now You are just paying for the word GIbson on an ES335. AS73 are great axes and affordable.

  • Comment removed

  • @broodyart

try the ibanez AS73 and then tell me what you think. This dude john reviews one on his site.

  • Comment removed

  • My, pretty bell tones! I'd like to find a lighter bodied one with a fatter neck.

Those things howl and roar, deeper voice than a Les Paul turned up.

  • Such Beauty

  • do you play any jazz and rock too ?

  • i think what your thinking of as the nut material is TUSQ, right?

  • nicee:D

  • donkey boner

  • great review, one of the few out there that actually tells pretty much everything you need to know... i'd love one on my wall... and, you mean a 90 degree angle :) ... thanks

  • How do you do those artificial harmonic runs at 0:13? It's driving me crazy because I can't find any instruction videos for it.

  • @Sean2112bd I've seen 2 days ago a similar video. The guy was touching the fret with his finger, while playing with an another finger and his right and was playing the notes. So one finger does the harmonic, another one play, and the right hand does the notes.

A little messy, isn't it! Hoping that was helpful. bye :D

  • @chokicou

I actually found a video that teaches it. Apparently these are called harp harmonics, or at least the technique is called that because it sounds like a harp when you play the guitar this way. But you are correct, it's a hybrid of harmonic notes with played notes. I'm practicing it right now :)

  • That is my dream guitar. I also like the epiphone dot which is a budget friendly version of this guitar

  • does anybody know where i can get a nice hollow bodied guitar for $300 or less? please reply!!

  • @515742617000027 buy a fake gun and rob a guitar store

  • I know we're talkng about two completely different animals but what is your opinion of hte Epiphone Sheraton?

  • I have one that I bought in 1969 new. It's the best all around guitar you can have. It'll do anything. When I got mine it had a trapeze tail piece and big inlays. My old boss put a L.P. TP on it and it changed everything for the better.

  • just bought me a epiphone es 335, love it just as much as gibson.

  • Holy crap that sounds great. How much does that cost?

  • Check out Guitar John, he knows all the chords

  • oh man i could masturbate to that guitar. if only it didnt cost 3000 dollars

  • is the word for the nut material you were looking for Corian?

  • Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues uses an ES335 as his main guitar.

  • Lovely playing at the beginning. I enjoyed the vid. I have a 339

  • beautiful playing :) my friend has a guitar that looks like it may be a copy of this one, although the bridge, humbuckers and tuners are gold coloured. has anyone heard of the brand "Electra" and knows how this style model compares to the gibson?

  • @skatingequalsPoWeR

Famous matsumoku made brand. Beautiful guitar and very good tone...

  • so beautiful playing! you're awesome. I hope some day, after years of practicing, I'll play my instrument this way. Work work work :)

  • Whenever I see one of these I think Chuck Berry, no one else. I've got an Epiphone Sheraton II. Wish I had the 335, but the Sheraton is good guitar, it's actually a great guitar for what it cost.

  • @Jethro494 I think of Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour as well.

  • Ah - the 335. Nothing sounds quite like it.

    BTW - 0:14 - 0:19 - just lovely.

  • looks likean epiphone casino to me

  • is it just the cam or does this guitar have single coil touch??

  • Cam all the way baby.....

  • @AndiiTheStratophonic I think it's the hollow body that gives it that sound

  • @AndiiTheStratophonic i though about that too :s

  • What are you playing in the beginning? It is beautiful

  • I made it up on the spot. Can't do covers because of copyright infringement.

  • @johnhguitar

Thank you for the fast answer! And wow, that is pretty impressive! I have also been practising chord melody improv, what you played in this vid really made me more inspired to keep practising just that. Could you explain what thoughts are going through your mind whilst improvising in that way? And btw, love the harmonics . Beautiful stuff :)

  • Thanks for the comments. I try to think of melodies and support those melodies or compliment those lines with chords underneath. In chord/melody the highest sounding notes are the melody or tune/song. You have plenty of choices so you need to study a bit of harmony to find out some possible options. Ted Greene's books on chords are loaded with that information. Good luck!

  • @johnhguitar

You can't do covers on Youtube??????

  • Enjoyed the video. Just bought a '98 model and love it. Would you have any recommendation for a small amp, say one just above a practice model? I find these pickups a little hot for my Marshall.

  • The new Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue

  • Hey John, very nice vid you got here.......my problem is... I`m goin down to the crossroads every night to sell my soul to the devil.. but the only thing I get is.... crazy offers for my Epiphone Dot.....

  • And what is your idea of a crazy offer?
