@JucyBsBs Natalie Gutman doesnt play it mucky at this part, however her general version of this of it is sloopy especially the ending, Rostropovich will always play it the best, but I think Han-Na Chand plays it very well!
She is really good!!! XD Im not a cello player but i was wondering if its a common thing for cellists to breath deeply b/c she is the only cellist ive seen do that D:
@AnimeHottie1 I breathe deeply all the time while playing cello.... even though I am not playing a wind instrument sometimes I find myself forcing myself to take a deep breath after an intense passage, whether emotionally, or technically. :)
@tatormellow Breaking a bow hair isn't as hard as it seems if you're playing passionately. You almost don't think about it.
Last year I was part of a band at my school called the Rockestra, and every time we played Kashmir by Led Zeppelin like 20 bow hairs would fly off my bow. I went through 3 or 4 school bows... my teacher had a bow graveyard at the end of the year, he was so mad at me... but I loved playing that piece, it was AWESOME
a lot a technical errors, especially at the end of the cadenza. I heard the Pieter Wispelwey recording. We nearly have the same mistakes at the same passage. I know this cadenza is a nightmare, I'm working on it right now.But they are supposed to be world famous soloist. I just can say,on this cadenza rostropovich is technically perfect !
this can be perfectly running and violent with perfect intonation and intonation.
But ok, being on stage like adds a lot of difficulties (check Misha Quint cadenza) but rostropovich was live too ... his performance is seriously astonishing

@anisometropie it depends what effect you want to have, like want sort of sound you want from the cello, rather than using simple fingering which could sound a lot different. Its not really out of tune actually :P
She has the most amazing interpretation. Most others play it rigidly, she doesnt. Her rubato and her emotions in the last part of the cadenza made me spellbound. The whole point of a cadenze is to show off your musicality and you technical ability. She nailed it. Fan-frikin-tastic. ********** 10 stars
@atirisdes Who cares? Have you listened to how well she plays? Where you're born shouldn't limit what you're able to do...and the whole point of music is to bring all sorts of people together. The way Han Na plays this piece is amazing, and she's able to bring all these people together over the internet...think of what she's done for the music world...think of what we could accomplish if we all put our hearts into what we do like she does with her music...
wow....summin else let me tell you....i think u have to be talented to play this peice not jus an average cellist....u ether got or u dnt...might aswel not play if u dnt

translation: Wow! Something else! Let me tell you; I think you have to be talented to perform this piece. Not any average cellist. You either got it or you don't, might as well not play if you don't.
livelife409, Why don't you let us know when you put up a video of your own playing of this Shostakovich cadenza that's better than hers. Until then, why don't you just shut the hell up about instrumentalists in general, because you don't really need talent to play anything, just hard work and determination
I agree 100%. Some people think her interpretation is terrible compared to others. No one plays like Han-na. A lot of the recordings out there are just terrible.......I HATE IT when cellists play this piece like it was composed in the Romantic period. There isnt anything lyrical about Shostakovich. THis is soviet/war music.
While I agree that it's wrong to approach Shostakovich's music from a 19th century, romantic perspective, it's also not correct to say that there's nothing lyrical about Shostakovich. Just listen to the first movement of his Sixth Symphony, the third movement of the Fifth, or the second movement of this very concerto (and countless other examples). Lyricism abounds in his music, made all the more poignant by the fact that much of it indeed can be thought of as "Soviet war music."
WOOOAAAAHHHH.......5:33. When she played the B-flat and F long. THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! Adds to the suspense. SHe has the interpretation of this piece. No contest!!!!!!!!!
I love her vibrato in the beginning... And I think this whole performance is very deep, makes really honour to this masterpiece. Though I didn't like her Haydn, in Shostakovich she's better than great!
If you think about it it seems a little silly that professional musicians are expected to perform in restrictive long dresses/tailcoats when of course they end up sweating so much or putting in so much energy and needing so much freedom of movement that they'd be happier performing in, I don't know, tennis gear. And yet we expect them to do their thing whilst dressed as if going to someone's wedding! My old conductor used to get sweat patches on his back that were visible even when he wore...
Her sweet salty sweat is slowly streaming on her eyelids and seeping into her dark eyes. I played table-tennis yesterday and the same thing happened. It smarts and burns like hell. Perhaps that's why she can convey all the agony so intensely. Just think about it, she just wants to wipe the sweat around her closed eyes but she has to play Shostakovich and there are so amny notes that there is no time to do it.
I don't know why people give this such a hard time. She is an amazing virtuoso. This is pure brilliance. Perfect intonation, expression, and to add to that there were parts that were like Rostropovich's but is she going to act like she never heard the orginal recording. Of course there are parts that are similar but for the most part it is diferent.
Perfect Intonation to me is a relative term. I think one with great ears can go through this performance and not hear any out of tune notes. I think it is in tune with the orchestra and no moments ever came up where I thought, "What was that?"
"looks so hot", "interesting fingering", "hair hanging off the bow", "no one thinks you are being cute", etc...please, don't tell a professional musician to talk about music when none of you are here. Besides, if you look at my original post, it was indeed directed at her playing.
Professional? Your original post was anything but that. Saying she "is no rock star" and has a higher risk for heart attack and tendonitis is just disrespectful. Maybe you should reevaluate yourself.
