  • great music!!!

  • Oh my goodness.....so focused....

  • i've heard much better

  • rostropovich plays it better :P at 5:25 he is the only perform i have heard that plays it clean and not mucky

  • @JucyBsBs Wispelwey = better

  • @JucyBsBs Natalie Gutman doesnt play it mucky at this part, however her general version of this of it is sloopy especially the ending, Rostropovich will always play it the best, but I think Han-Na Chand plays it very well!

  • @BaboonBassoon To be fair, it was written for Rostropovich.

  • @Mecinimi I know :) but I still love it!

  • She is really good!!! XD Im not a cello player but i was wondering if its a common thing for cellists to breath deeply b/c she is the only cellist ive seen do that D:

  • @AnimeHottie1 I breathe deeply all the time while playing cello.... even though I am not playing a wind instrument sometimes I find myself forcing myself to take a deep breath after an intense passage, whether emotionally, or technically. :)

  • @runla2 ooooohhhhhhhhhh....Oki!! that make alot of sense...I guess...;3

  • I think Shostakovich would be proud of this performance

  • wow this totally beats like heavy metal

  • love hanna S2~~~

  • han-na chang is a CELLO GOD!

  • she broke one of her bow strings playing this piece! I F'ING LOVE HER!!!

  • @tatormellow Breaking a bow hair isn't as hard as it seems if you're playing passionately. You almost don't think about it.

Last year I was part of a band at my school called the Rockestra, and every time we played Kashmir by Led Zeppelin like 20 bow hairs would fly off my bow. I went through 3 or 4 school bows... my teacher had a bow graveyard at the end of the year, he was so mad at me... but I loved playing that piece, it was AWESOME

Han Na Chang is amazing, no doubt!

  • I love it how she plays the chello XDXDXD god damn XD

  • I agree, this sounds awefully good, stunning!!

  • wow, Han-Na Chang's Schostaovic is probarbly the best nowadays.

  • @cellodax88 probably? /probably/? definitely.

  • What orchestra is she playing with?

  • BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with Tadaaki Otaka conducting.

  • beautiful....just beautiful

  • The best performance.

    The best interpretation.

    The best accompagniment.

    The best cinematographic.

  • a lot a technical errors, especially at the end of the cadenza. I heard the Pieter Wispelwey recording. We nearly have the same mistakes at the same passage. I know this cadenza is a nightmare, I'm working on it right now.But they are supposed to be world famous soloist. I just can say,on this cadenza rostropovich is technically perfect !

  • this is live.. hear her record and there you will hear that she has a perfect intonation and technic there.

but i think this "errors" make this performace very special, this make it sound runnig and violent

  • this can be perfectly running and violent with perfect intonation and intonation.

But ok, being on stage like adds a lot of difficulties (check Misha Quint cadenza) but rostropovich was live too ... his performance is seriously astonishing

  • Bonjour.

Tu joue bien VC.

  • I started to play the cello 3 years ago ... you can't compare me to her.

  • Je sais bien que tu a aucun valeur de comparaison à Han Na et je n`ai aucun intention de comparer . Tu croit que tu es comparable à Han Na ? Ridicule. Même si tu pratique 30 ans

    , tu n`y iras pas arriver.Tu rêve .

  • damn you're so stupid. this is exactly what you are doing, just after saying you're not doing it.

  • Comment removed

  • well, DUH. this piece was originally written for Rostropovich.

  • 1:17 I don't understand the point to get up there on the G string, moreover it's not in tune

  • @anisometropie it depends what effect you want to have, like want sort of sound you want from the cello, rather than using simple fingering which could sound a lot different. Its not really out of tune actually :P

  • She has the most amazing interpretation. Most others play it rigidly, she doesnt. Her rubato and her emotions in the last part of the cadenza made me spellbound. The whole point of a cadenze is to show off your musicality and you technical ability. She nailed it. Fan-frikin-tastic. ********** 10 stars

  • @kizzadawizza12345678 fucking communist chinese

  • @atirisdes Who cares? Have you listened to how well she plays? Where you're born shouldn't limit what you're able to do...and the whole point of music is to bring all sorts of people together. The way Han Na plays this piece is amazing, and she's able to bring all these people together over the internet...think of what she's done for the music world...think of what we could accomplish if we all put our hearts into what we do like she does with her music...

  • @bruceashhicks han na na na na... na na na, na na na, na na na... here comes the hotsteppah brrrah!

  • She is a beast on this cadenza. absolutely sick-en-ing!!

  • wow....summin else let me tell you....i think u have to be talented to play this peice not jus an average cellist....u ether got or u dnt...might aswel not play if u dnt

  • talent isn't everything. sure, it's an advantage, but hard work counts for something as well doesn't it?

a lot of people play instruments, and a majority doesn't have the "it" you're referring to, should they not play then?

but yes i agree, han-na chang is amazing.

  • yes..i see what ur saying..i dnt necessarily think they should stop playing but not even begin to play summin like this...true art...buuut it doesn't matter it comes dwn to ur heart...and if u feel it...really feel it u can b as good as u wont...but most people now-a-days dnt appreciate this love and beauty..so if u cant play and dnt have heart to do it..then dnt play...its a waste of time..music is a diff language...sum people jus never get it or cant get it

  • translation: Wow! Something else! Let me tell you; I think you have to be talented to perform this piece. Not any average cellist. You either got it or you don't, might as well not play if you don't.

  • livelife409, Why don't you let us know when you put up a video of your own playing of this Shostakovich cadenza that's better than hers. Until then, why don't you just shut the hell up about instrumentalists in general, because you don't really need talent to play anything, just hard work and determination

  • Han-na Chang has gorgeous musicality in this piece, her cadenza is awe inspiring. I cried.

  • i did also...

  • She broke like 4 hairs but still its worth it you got to be rough in this concerto. She is really great and this is now one of my favorite videos.

  • I agree 100%. Some people think her interpretation is terrible compared to others. No one plays like Han-na. A lot of the recordings out there are just terrible.......I HATE IT when cellists play this piece like it was composed in the Romantic period. There isnt anything lyrical about Shostakovich. THis is soviet/war music.

  • While I agree that it's wrong to approach Shostakovich's music from a 19th century, romantic perspective, it's also not correct to say that there's nothing lyrical about Shostakovich. Just listen to the first movement of his Sixth Symphony, the third movement of the Fifth, or the second movement of this very concerto (and countless other examples). Lyricism abounds in his music, made all the more poignant by the fact that much of it indeed can be thought of as "Soviet war music."

  • I think (and Han-Na Chang thinks this too, look at her interview) that the 2nd movementhas something liyrical.

  • She goes all out on the cello. Her bow must be uber expensive if it can withstand that kind of playing. Same thing with her cello. She is so amazing.

  • Her cello is aguadagnini from 1717

  • how much u thinks it worth

  • WOOOAAAAHHHH.......5:33. When she played the B-flat and F long. THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! Adds to the suspense. SHe has the interpretation of this piece. No contest!!!!!!!!!

  • She has the best interpretation of this whole piece.......I forgot to type "best" the first time!!! hahahahaha

    ^_^

  • *twitch*

    Break off the hair!

  • she fingers are so small

  • shes sweating onto her cello!

  • psh i do that sometimes, too

  • I love her vibrato in the beginning... And I think this whole performance is very deep, makes really honour to this masterpiece. Though I didn't like her Haydn, in Shostakovich she's better than great!

  • what about her passacaglia

  • She's in agony - musically and physically.

  • ...a black jacket.

That's an aside. I really came by to say this is simply amazing, and I wish I could play like this.

  • If you think about it it seems a little silly that professional musicians are expected to perform in restrictive long dresses/tailcoats when of course they end up sweating so much or putting in so much energy and needing so much freedom of movement that they'd be happier performing in, I don't know, tennis gear. And yet we expect them to do their thing whilst dressed as if going to someone's wedding! My old conductor used to get sweat patches on his back that were visible even when he wore...

  • our conducter does that also and they should take notice to the stage lights. they can really heat up the stage.

  • Her sweet salty sweat is slowly streaming on her eyelids and seeping into her dark eyes. I played table-tennis yesterday and the same thing happened. It smarts and burns like hell. Perhaps that's why she can convey all the agony so intensely. Just think about it, she just wants to wipe the sweat around her closed eyes but she has to play Shostakovich and there are so amny notes that there is no time to do it.

  • now thats thinking with yer dipstik johnny!! lol

  • Gosh it would take an enormous amount of emotional energy to play this. I know I don't have it in me (ignoring the technical side).

    Good on her!

  • Bravo.

    She is virtuoso.

  • marvelous! I like how she isn't afraid to push the cello to its breaking point.

  • I don't know why people give this such a hard time. She is an amazing virtuoso. This is pure brilliance. Perfect intonation, expression, and to add to that there were parts that were like Rostropovich's but is she going to act like she never heard the orginal recording. Of course there are parts that are similar but for the most part it is diferent.

  • What is perfect intonation? =)

  • Perfect Intonation to me is a relative term. I think one with great ears can go through this performance and not hear any out of tune notes. I think it is in tune with the orchestra and no moments ever came up where I thought, "What was that?"

    That is my answer=)

  • Good answer! =)

  • wow it's amazing how she jumps from the low notes to high notes and still get the notes right

  • yes it is she must practice a lot r she is just that good and the way she play and pluck is cool

  • She must get that bow rehaired every week...

  • when she pluck it just like a upright gutar

  • u can see the hair hanging off the bow

  • shut the fuck up somtimes

  • guess i was right about you getting heart-attack and tendonitis already. you have my con"doh"lences!

  • shut up bitch she is better that you will ever be

  • ok i will

  • Yibar, Let's just talk about the music and how she is playing it, okay? No one thinks you are being cute.

  • "looks so hot", "interesting fingering", "hair hanging off the bow", "no one thinks you are being cute", etc...please, don't tell a professional musician to talk about music when none of you are here. Besides, if you look at my original post, it was indeed directed at her playing.

  • Professional? Your original post was anything but that. Saying she "is no rock star" and has a higher risk for heart attack and tendonitis is just disrespectful. Maybe you should reevaluate yourself.

  • She is playing Russian classical music. I disagree with the way she expresses herself just like you disagree with my comments.

  • Well Rostropovich obviously didn't disagree when he chose to take her under his wing. And he also didn't disagree when he told her that he could no longer teach her anything about music. And who was this concerto written for...?

You set yourself up for disappointment when you have unreachable expectations. Her being Korean and this piece being Russian has nothing to do with it.

  • Hi Kaikobird,

For once I agree with you on unreachable expectations. Personal expression is "personal", and I happened to also dislike the way Rostropovich plays, let alone this concerto; there is too much Rostropovich in this concerto. As someone else posted in other movements, Chang's interpretation is not her own, hence my disappointment. I prefer the second cello concerto any day.

  • How is the interpretation not her own? Every note she plays is unique. Why would she simply copy Rostropovich? Their interpretations are nothing alike. Maybe you just hear him playing it when you listen to others. Do you play cello?

  • If you listened close there were major differences interpretationally. Her interpretation is full of emotion and long romantic lines. She at times may not be in the Russian style but Shostakovich would have approved greatly!!! Did I say that her technique was flawless?

  • jeesy chrisy shes beating the poor thing to a pulp at the end of the song, i thought she was going to snap the frog clean off the bow

  • can't u see the hair hangin off the bow

  • I love how passionate she is... You just get into that zone and take all your emotions out on your instrument :)

  • She make a lot of funy faces when she's pleying XD

But she played very very good.

  • che plays so good and looks so hot.

  • awesome! thanks for posting. She has some interesting fingerings.
