This may have been said already since I did not read every post... The reason it is so much smoother is because of its rotational inertia. Basically, because it is so big and it resists changes in speed.
This isn't a Thompson CVJ, it's a co-planar double cardan joint. The patented Thompson innovation is the spherical scissor middle angle divider which allows use of only non-sliding rotating bearing joints.
Can you make instructions? I've been trying to understand the thompson coupling in order to build it from LEGO, now I'd like to build it from LEGO in order to understand it!
Guys! Ofcourse its big! It's made out out LEGO!! for heavens sake!
This joint is a huge improvement on traditional cv joints and ofcourse the u joint(cardan joint)
Good effort trying to build it out of lego bro! I design mechanical stuff as a hobby at home and currently trying to find a way to design a joint that functions/operates like a cv/thompson coupling but also with a much larger operating angle, upto 80/90 degrees :-)
Good ideas but a little big to use in a normal construction. Also, vibration on normal U-join are caused by your gear bearing system (only 1stud). Is the thompson join homocinethic ? You could also use a tripod join, also called CV-join. That is this type of join that we use in all system car, machinery and other system)
@nico71240 I know the Cv joints, but that joint has also a disadvantage in friction it creates. For lego the best version is the 3 studded CV i used in tatra though.
