that was a tranquilizer it was to sedate the horse not kill it...some horses lash out violently at a vet and they are treated differently than a horse who stands quietly for vet care for human safety.
NOBODY enjoys watching these images NOBODY. Just remember these horses would have never ever been bred in the first place without the sport of horseracing. They are born to race and the overwhelming majority of these horses are cared for extremely well by people who actually love horses !! Euthanasia happens in all walks of life. It's sad but it's a FACT OF LIFE. Get over it !
WHY DONT THE DUMBASSES JUST HUMANELY UTHINIZE IT?!?!?!?!?! How would they feel if they were shot in the head??? They probably would know what animals feel
I think some are missing the point, its not about the hard working and caring Trainers, Staff, and owners. It about race course grounds and thier lack of accountability. If you saw a person mis-treating a animal, you would act, thats what this video is about. The vet and the way he handled the situation. And as a matter of fact, the Owner did not know the facts until we informed him, the Vet lied to the trainer when asked what happened. The race course tried to cover it up, but failed.
If they destroy a horse right there on the track the damage is irreversible and the animal is in extreme pain. These owners have poured thousands of dollars into the training and care of these athletes so if there was anything that could have ben done, I'm sure they would have. They're not empty headed, ignorant, emotional, animal rights activists who know nothing about the sport like you.
Can someone shut that Zolbad guy I think he is typing with his arse cheeks. Of course they don't bloody shoot a Horse on track, if a horse breaks a leg the humane thing is to put it down, horses live standing up, if they stay still they get blood clots and die... Even if they do recover chances of reinjuring themselves is very High, even In fields
This is so sad, I don't understand why they couldn't euthenize it if they weren't completely sure the shot would kill the horse instantly. . . Obviously the shots didn't work, they did it 3 times I mean really!!! And this horse shouldn't even have had a reason to be killed, absolutely ridiculous and sad.
Second, the bolt gun - the captive bolt gun. Designed for use on cattle, sheep, pigs, things like that. NOT designed for horses, but used extensively in slaughterhouses anyway despite it being beyond inhumane for horses because of the anatomy of the horse's skull compared to that of a cow's. I have never once heard of a vet using a bolt gun on a horse to knock it out prior to euthanasia. I would never allow it done to a horse I own..
Broken legs CAN heal, depending on the nature of the fracture. If bone has punctured the skin, forget it, horse is immediately euthanized because the risk of infection is way, way too high. Otherwise, many breaks can be surgically repaired successfully. It's extremely expensive and there are risks, of course, but it is possible. Some horses can go on to be lightly rideable, but most do not. It all depends on the horse and the injury..
These are horrible pictures and the worst vet ever. This is not the way to end it´s life. It´s terrible already in the first place but doing it like this is criminal.
they should have done lethal injection as the only option of putting the horse down instead of making it suffer through three shots, ignorant and a horrible vet.
@Fordgurl101 It wasn't an actual gun, but a bolt gun, which is used to stun the horse while the injection is administered. The injection is not usually quick and painless with horses, and can then cause the horse to thrash and freak out in it's last moments. Bolt guns often misfire though, so that's probably what happened here, and the sound caused the horse to spook. Otherwise there would be MUCH more blood on both horse, and vet, which there is none. It's still sad though.
And to all those people who say racing is cruel are idiots. I've seen horse's healthy and well and left to there own devices in there paddocks and still break there legs and hurt themselves through no fault of humans, sometimes it just happens and with so many horse's in the world there bound to be some causality ok so get over it, like with any athlete they get hurt just with horse;s when there legs go it is sometimes not possible to help them so putting them down is the only option.
@PlumagedPower People who say racing is cruel are NOT idiots. That's their own opinion. It is mine, too. It doesn't have to be through fault of humans, but in racing it is. The humans are the reason the horse is racing, so therefore it is their fault that the horse should fall in such circumstances. And racing is purely for the enjoyment of HUMANS, so they can bet etc. The horses can do the exact same thing in their paddocks or whatever, with other horses, if they wish.
@PlumagedPower Some horses are practically beaten while they race, to get them to go that bit faster, to win the race, to win that much more money... for the humans. ''With so many horses in the world you there's bound to be some casualty'' - yes, but racing is only a catalyst in this and will make it even MORE likely.
My guess whatever it was just spooked the animal not hurt it, if you have ever had the misfortune of seeing an animal shot in the head like with people there is a stupid amount of blood since there is a lot of blood pumped to the head so yeah that animal was not shot with a gun, most likely a bolt gun miss fired causing the horse to spook. Which is strange cause i thought most tracks now use injection to euthanize though perhaps not all places can afford the drug so would explain the gun.
@PlumagedPower Exactly what I said about it being a bolt gun.. Though it was likely going to be used to stun the horse before the injection as the injection itself can be quite... Jarring. So many places now use a bolt gun to stun the horse before administering the injection.
@crazypizzahorse234 What the hell, don't you understand? When a horse has broken a leg recovery is almost IMPOSSIBLE. Horses are not meant to sustain broken legs, and they cannot stay stationary on three legs for the time it needs to recover. I've had two horses that broke legs and both had to be euthanised. In this case it's better to let the poor animal go.
@crazypizzahorse234 Actually, I've had four horses, not two. That's not the point. Retirement doesn't always work for horses, and when a horse has a broken leg the only way to get it to recover is to hang it in a sling from the ceiling - comparable to torture. It's sad to have to euthanise a horse but sometimes it's the kindest thing to do.
@crazypizzahorse234 Nowhere near as silly as a lot of the other commenters! I kinda let my rage out on you. I hate when people comment "heartless bastards" when they don't understand the background. No offense, anyway!
@crazypizzahorse234 It may not have been a break he could recover from. Many breaks, while they can heal, can cause more problems for the horse. The chance of the horse developing Laminitis is great, because they have to shift their weight to the remaining 3 good legs, which is EXTREMELY painful for the horse, and they would have to be put down anyways because once that happens they will be suffering.
a series of pictures with a story! not exactly convincing is it? as i'm sure people have pointed out that horse was not lame but had a broken leg. and as for the rest of the story, i'd need more proof than a few stills!
did you know that the racing public are some of the most worthless, most foolish shit bags on earth? They never learn and still go to the track...even after there have been countless convictions of racefixing? You are the lowest scum on earth. Retards are the only ones who go to the track. You see normal people at casinos...but at the track...only the sick stupid idiots go there....the foodstamp people and the handicappes...who never learn and are so imorally irrational....and so stupid.
The vet is using a MANUAL CAPTIVE BOLT gun, which REQUIRES THE CUTTING OF THE HORSE'S THROAT. The manual captive bolt gun does not kill, it renders unconscious. Any agricultural website that describes the use of the captive bolt makes this statement. This horse could have been given a lethal injection. The statement that it could not be given because horse is standing has no basis in fact. The drug used to kill animals is the same drug used when animals have general anesthesia. It is simply an
Manual captive bolt-it requires the slitting of the horse's throat. Look it up on any agriculture website, use of manual captive bolt. Pneumatic captive bolts used in slaughterhouses were found to be so powerful it drove brain tissue into the bloodstream. Fear of mad cow required they stop using the pneumatic captive bolt. Horses can be standing when given a lethal injection. The drug used to kill animals is simply an overdose of anaesthesia. Animals go unconscious the same as if they were goin
@ShowViedo Slitting of the throat is only required in slaughter. They sometimes use a bolt gun at racetracks and the like to stun the horse while they give it the injection so that the horse doesn't thrash as injection is not usually quick and painless with horses.
@honjlh My sister´s horse had to be put down and it was done by injection. The horse died very quickly and had the grass still in its mouth. It all depends on how it´s done.
@Saartje05 I've also had a horse put down by injection and it was also relatively quick. However that vet used a "double dose" of his own special "cocktail" for him.
It does depend on the horse, however it often also depends on the vet.
@honjlh Doesn´t really matter how big the dose is, as long as it works. If I had a vet who tried to put down my horse the way they did on the video, I would have used that same gun on him.

Listen, the way things are going they will be giving "dissidents" a bullet to the head soon. U may have ur final glance around at the field ur in until someone yanks on the metal chain around ur neck...BANG!! into ur temple..'o, dear Lord, I'm not dead"..u strain to get away from what u though was a "doctor" but he is reloading and BANG give u another one..u can feel the warm blood pouring down ur back ..u r in hell now..but wait..there is none nmore shot to the head for u. Nice huh?
@annieladysmith Even when that horse is going through hell he does not step once on that injured leg. It is indeed likely broken and the beautiful, trusting animal is worth more to them dead...grow up!
To all these people who think they're vets - even if they are vets - you CAN heal horses with broken legs. The horse can be hung from a sling for a year - since horses will live to 45 years old, 1 year out really is nothing - just feed it bland food so it doesn't think too much during that time. You won;t ride it again, but if you buy a horse, it should be for life, not just for fun as if it was a sports car - otherwise, just get the sports car.
@trogirogir9 ARE YOU INSANE???? Keeping a horse on box rest, immobilised, is verging on torture!! Good lord how can you even begin to consider doing that to a horse??
@MrRedlet lets hope you don't end up in a wheel chair eh? It doesn't have to be torture - keep lots of other horses around, keep him amused with things, music, people, a companion goat in his stall. Don't feed him like he's a meat cow. In the past it used to be a year in a sling but now they can bolt it up. The only reason they don't is because the horse's career is over so no money in it. Should have better insurance policies.
@trogirogir9 I see your point and I agree that they should have better policies, however the risk of a horse not surviving the anaesthesia to have it's leg bolted is 1 in 10, the slightest pressure on the leg will displace the bone slightly meaning it will take much longer to heal and it may have to be realigned so there's a very slim chance of it being a straightforward procedure, or even successful. And no, I hope I do not end up in a wheelchair.
@trogirogir9 Oh, and bone is the only tissue in the body which, when healed, regains almost 100% normal function, so the horse's career isn't over if the recovery is successful.
@trogirogir9 it's in my nature to give a horse every chance to live but if a horse had to be strung from the ceiling then it is basically torture to a horse. music, toys, people. there's only so much they can do to keep a horse calm. my gelding tore his tendon sheath and was on stable rest for 3 months he had horses stabled next to him and i spent hours every day out grooming him etc he was still miserable. look at barbero - he got laminitis and he was nearly ready to go home
@iqreevo If your horse lives to 45 then those 3 months were definitely worth it! Laminitis is caused purely by what the horse eats, they should have sourced different hay. The hay grass shouldn't be fertilized, the grass type should be different. The hay should be harvested later with less protein from the seeds but horses can't cope with high protein their whole lives. Laminitis is so sad but it's so prevalent in the US because the agricultural industry revolves around cattle fodder.
@trogirogir9 luckily his tendon injury wasnt as serious as a stapped bone with the tendons and ligaments torn away as well which happens to most racers... and my shetlend pony is in his 30's and i'd be thrilled if my fellow lived to be in his 30's or 40's but honestly i have a heart and i couldnt watch my horse being in unbearable pain confined to a stall without being able to walk with the possibility of never being able to run... i'd do the kindest thing and let him go.
@trogirogir9 An average horse DOES NOT live to 45. That's like a person living to be 100. The average is mid-late 20s. You are thinking of Foundering, not Laminitis. Laminitis is caused by many things, including too much pressure on a particular hoof, like when one leg is broken or another hoof is damaged and they have to switch their weight to the other hoof.
Laminitis is not curable. The best you can do is get special shoes for them, and pain meds, and that doesn't always work.
@trogirogir9 VERY rarely do horses ever make it to 45. The normal lifespan of a horse is into its mid 20s. For an animal thats instict tells it that it must be on its feet to avoid danger from the time it is born... Hanging it in a sling for an entire year is more torture than anything else. And very rarely do they actually sling a horse (someone has been watching too much "Dreamer") the horse will be in a cast, and likely develop Laminitis, at which point they will truely suffer.
It's a sad fact, but there are very, very few people who would be willing to put the time and effort that would require into caring for a racehorse. That would cost a fortune to keep that horse sustained and on the medications and treatments it would need to heal fully. The majority (not all) of the people who own these horses are in it for the money, and if a horse isn't making them money, it's useless to them. Also, horses don't live until 45.
If you know anything about guns, or the horse business you should know that is not an actual gun. It does not shoot bullets.
It's likely a bolt gun, which often misfire, thus the most likely reason for "reloading" several times in attempt to fix the problem. However the sound likely spooked the horse, which lead to the thrashing around. If the horse were actually shot 3 times in the head there would be A LOT of blood on both horse, and vet, which there isn't.
@honjlh Absolutely agreed. There would be much more blood. But on principle, a bolt gun is a more humane way of killing a horse than a lethal injection. It's quick and the horse doesn't know what hit him. With a lethal injection, it's slow and the horse is conscious as he falls. I'd rather have my baby taken by an excellent marksman than by injection.
@Nizingur Well the sad truth is that a bolt gun doesn't usually kill, but just stun. But it is enough to stun the horse while they give the injection so it doesn't feel it. I've done rescue and with it comes the possiblity of rescuing horses who are beyond help, and have no quality of life, so we have had to put horses down, and it's never easy.. But injection is not always quick and effective like they say. It can take many minutes while the horse gasps for breath and struggles.
Thanks for sharing that little tidbit I always presumed from what i see on TV (I know bad source of info right there) That once the injection is administered the animal simply falls asleep. perhaps they only struggle when the dosage is too small? i would imagine it can be hard with large animals like horses who weight and size can vary to get the dosage right. which would explain why stunning beforehand would be necessary. I actually feel bad for the vet that's a tough job.
@PlumagedPower Sadly "simply falling asleep" is not usually the case. If you get a really kind vet like the one we use, they will use a "double dose" so that it is very quick and effective. But it's the same with all animals really. Injection doesn't always act quickly, and sometimes requires multiple doses. And when that happens, it's never a pretty sight.
And yes, it is quite hard on the vet, or at least the ones that still care, but they know that it's best for the animal.
@honjlh fix the problem????? They wanted to kill the horse but for some reason they were too cheap or lazy to give it the leathal injection right away! Instead they tortured this animal for ten minutes! and you know why? Because it would never race again.
The question is, good vet or bad vet. If you agree with bad vet then repost. Its not about trainers, owners, its about the way the racing industry treats horses. And just to make it clear, the trainer had no idea what happened to this horse until he saw the images, which was not what the race course told him.
I'm guessing that they couldn't get close enough for a lethal injection to begin with, is that why they tried to shoot first? They're only still shots but it looked like the horse was standing calmly enough to stick instead of shoot it. And wouldn't a shot to the head kill it instantly? I don't know really anything about hunting or shooting so idk what it takes to kill a large animal with a gun.
As much as I really do love horses...You are comparing them to people. Who can walk on a cast or stand still when being treated. Horses can not. and they will not. If a horses leg is lame, they are going to be miserable even if its fixed. They can't support their bodies on three legs.
its a humane killer gun in his hand, they always use them on a standing distressed horse as trying to inject is nearly impossible-hence the tall screens
just imagine yourself running at top speed when suddenly your leg snaps and shatters into thousands of pieces.Their bodies are designed to support weight on four legs because their weight bearing ability is a lot more disproportionate to their frame, whereas a dog's frame could easily accommodate walking with three legs. This horse would have had a painful and miserable life, even after his leg healed. What kind of life is that for a horse so young to be drugged until he dies?
You clearly do not know very much about equine physiology. Until you do some serious studying, or even just a little, you shouldn't go yammering on about healing the incurable. Some fractures are fatal fractures, especially if they puncture the skin. You can make the foolish choice of risking the horse even more suffering by throwing all sorts of screws and pins in and hope that the horse even makes it out of anesthesia (Barbaro), but that would be the inhumane choice.
Horrid...but how many of you fucks on this page eat meat? Why are you any different? YOU ARE NOT! I am a rider, a vegan, a horse lover for life and you all do the same when you go out for steak. Oh, you forgot about that abuse, how convenient. This is horrid even for VET work even if it were merely tranquilizers for some rehab. There are morons around every corner and hypocrites. I chose my horses well being over most humans, I do Dressage, Jumpers and Polo my horses love it. People are ugly...
This is ridiculous. That was a tranquilizer. As far as I know (which is not much) They will only put down a horse when it's broken it's leg badly. And when they DO put them down, it's done kindly, because they euthanize them. Don't post about what you don't know. This video makes me angry, but not for the reason you were posting it for. I'm angry at you for posting it in the first place, and feeding the idea that race horses are not cared for. They are treated like kings.
Another rich mans sport..not unlike Greyhound racing.,when the animal is of no use,.,discard it..say you love horses...BULLSHIT..as long as it makes money it's just a piece of business machinery...It's a living creature you upper class fuck pigs..Money money money..all you bloody think about..hope you die a sufferable death..and if you argue your point..remember you are in a MINORITY!!!!..The Wealthy are responsible for this cruelty amongst others like the fur trade.Trade on demand for the rich
You can fix a horses broken leg, it takes time and patients. However, many people choose to put the horse down because it can never be ridden again at a race horse pace, therefor it is rendered useless. Just so everyone knows that.
@slipknotgirl06 That and it messes the other legs up, they don't have the time for it in a race stable. The horse would be consigned to stud, box or field, and would be more likely to reinjure in a field. It's not fair on the horse as much as anything else
I highly doubt they would shoot a horse in a public place. It would put way to many people at risk if he was firing a gun in a PUBLIC place. What if he missed and shoot the groom or one of the other people standing around? He wouldn’t because he would have a loaded gun!!!! I’m fairly cretin they have laws for that sort of thing. That was a tanq gun and looks to me the horse had such a high lvl of adrenaline he had to be tranqed more then once.
@amuroth Helllo? Tranquilizer gun? to the head? Close up? Nooooooo, that is why there are syringes with needles on the end.. A muscle shot would have worked if you wanted to tranq the horse.. besides.. NO horse with a broken leg can be moved humanely without a big splint on the leg.. that would have been the very first thing done. YOU don't know anything about horses and vet care or this whole scene would clearly be trying to put the horse down. ... right where he was.
My horse broke a leg and the vet say leave her out side in the pasture so she can get herself up.She healed fine.By the way atheritis is not deadly if you want a copanion to be with.I only shoot if uncurable which some are.But we shot a deer once cause cars was hitting her and she could not get up.Why people kept running her over ?I don,t know.Sometimes you can save horses.Sometimes not.
@complexgirl13 I am NOT saying shooting THIS horse is right or wrong, i am just saying in some cases the best thing to do to a horse with a broken leg is to put it to sleep! There are also several types of lameness, did he pull something? was it nail bound? was it kicked?
If you pet dog had no eqality of life would you left it suffer??
@robertstokes52 I do not treat my two horses like shit! they have the best of everything, are very well loved and seem very happy to me saying as they nicker everytime i drive on the yard (yes they no the sound of my car) 1 of my horses is a ex-racehorse, i took him on after his racing carrer and now he competes, hacks, jumps and plays out in the field with his friends.. If you leave a horse stood with a un-fixable broken leg that is animal cruelty
Why the fuck did these dumbfucks shoot it? Was euthanizing out of the question or something? Gotta love horse racing, ha. The industry advertises itself as glamorous, but in reality, welfare violations, cruelty, and premature deaths are an unavoidable part of this industry based on greed. Racing 2 year olds? TBs aren't fully grown & sound until 3. Most end up going to shit ass auctions and end up in the hands of kill buyers, the lucky ones are re-trained and re-homed. Fuck everyone that races.
@swingmaster first of all put your stupid comment away, you dont no me u dont no how much i weigh and secondly, if we was allowed to ride in fields we would but were not because our country parks are for 'walkers' and 'bikers' and horses have right of way on the road. grow up and learn some respect
And on a final note, its not just racehorses that break legs!
OVER 1000 HORSES GET PUT DOWN EACH YEAR AFTER BEING HIT MY CARS/VANS ECT, NEXT TIME YOU DRIVE PAST A HORSE ***PASS WIDE AND SLOW***...***KILL YOUR SPEED NOT MY HORSE***
@VxdVxn Its not like we carnt be botherd tryin to fix our horses broken bones! I dont no how i'd cope if my baby had to be out down but i do no i coulnt watch him being stuck in a sling for months on end, then still being on months of box rest, then not being able to turn him out with his friends incase he starts running about putting to much strain on his leg and brakes it again! Horses aint dogs. Ive seen a horse with a broken leg and its awfull, they fall and panic and usally do more damage!!
@Tammyx90 I wouldnt shoot my child cause I cant bear the thought of them being down and out in a hospital bed after an almost fatal car accident. Some people give up too easily... or maybe it's just a money problem. Anything is fixable unless it's incurable and eventually fatal. I know horses arent dogs, and they arent people, etc, etc... anything is possible, regardless of species.
But he wasn't shot.... No horses are shot on course, thats ridiculous! Also all the muppets saying racing is cruel, do some research first, the amount of time, money, love and attention that goes into looking after a horse far surpasses that of one in a field, and people that say horses don't like running they are forced to.... If a horse doesn't want to run, he won't run simple as, it's a horse, a jockey is a man, it's clear who is coming out on top there....
@zakubabyboy No id rather be cared for on hand and foot by a stable lass/lad that loves you more than anything in the world that be confined in a field or in the wild....
@lukeyboy1325 how many of the horses you are looking after are over 30 years old? Surely after you've been working for a few years most of the horses you are looking after will be retired? Where are the stable lads & lasses then? I bet you only have 1 or 2 oldies on your yard, or even none. Horses live till their 45 years old.
Stop racing them, it is BS they don't do it in a natural setting! It IS all about the money, shoot the owners for once, see how they like it. Fucking pigs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have questions since I'm researching "the business of horses". If the horse was shot in the head with a bullet, where is all the brain matter/blood, and why don't you have a picture of the horse when it finally went "down"? Assuming that they shot it on the field and euthanized it on the field, it would have collapsed on the field and have to be removed by a tractor or other large vehicles. And further more, the people's faces aren't distressed and their shirts are clean of blood.
holy shit are people ever retarded, im in the race horse business and all i hear from people that just look at it from the outside is how terrible of a sport it is, well guess what.. its called sport of kings for a reason, you have no idea how much dedication goes into horse racing, and please.. do you really think a public place would shoot a horse? no, because its against policy first of all and second of all thats just plain wrong, good bye.
@victoriannexoxo i'm tired of it to!!!!! All people ever say is "oh well horse racing is wrong they run there horses heart out and then slaughter them!" Well news flash to people who think that horse racing is a sport the horses want to run! like secretariat, ruffian, babaro, seattle slew, rachel alexandra, zenyatta. They ALL loved to run and they WERENT slaughtered! There althetes just like US!
@victoriannexoxo Is that what you think about people that don't like the business you are in,,Retarded.!! It does actually go with the snobbery and sole business ethic of your trade, people that love horses ride them down country lanes, not breed and race them to within an inch of their lives, straddle conceivable hurdles.and discard them once they have become unprofitable.Sport of Kings, the higher classes,wealth..also responsible for other murderous animal cruelty.Disgusting!!!
To all the people asking why they could not 'fix the horse'... horses are not like dogs, they can not happily hop around with a cast on for a few months, they need all four legs to move about, is it nice to leave a horse stood in his box for months on end with a cast on? then once its healed to get chromic arthritis with in years yet again leaving it to stand 24/7 in its stable??
We horse owners love our horses but we have to look at there future!! I would never want my boy confinded to his box!
@Tammyx90 Humans get broken legs and yet we dont put them down because we dont want to see them cooped up in the house until it's healed. I just hate how people can play god with animals, but when it comes to humans we do everything in our power to make sure they make it out ok.
@VxdVxn Maybe you should try and force a horse ro stand in a stall 24/7. Impossible task and it's more animal cruelty than putting it down and ending it's pain. Humans are selfish I agree but remember, you're a human too so you can't really blame it on others.
@Tammyx90 But you have to bear in mind some injuries do not cause permanent damage, a friend of mine had a horse with a broken leg, but instead of "putting it out of it's misery" she nursed it back to health and a few years later won her reserve champion at a country show, I think it depends on each individual wound and the owner's willingness to do what would be best, the easiest solution, shoot the bastard, but not always the most beneficial.
@Tammyx90 Why would wwe need to shoot horses in the first place? i mean fair enough, if a horse breaks its leg somehow on its own, but we humans treat them like shit, make them race to feed our gambling addictions.. we break their legs, then we kill the.. you can say an bullyshit you want, if you shoot a horst. you're a murderer.
@Tammyx90 The horse is lame. . . it didn't break a leg, and besides, even if it did they could have still saved him. My horse has come up lame a couple of times. Did i kill him? no. was he always in his "box". No. He healed. I ride him a lot! ans He runs and jumps and plays ALL the time now. He is happy and living a happy life. It's like us pulling a musce for them.
Try a fucking 30-06 next time, it can kill a deer in one shot. Were they using a pistol? Are you serious? It takes 3 shots from a 9mm to kill a PERSON, not a horse.
Unfortunately, it is very common for horses to be killed in this sport by it's owner if it comes up lame for whatever reason, or it doesn't win or bring in any money for them. My father in law races thoroughbreds, and I've known him to sell a horse for slaughter, just because it wasn't winning enough for him. Needless to say, he and I don't get along very well anymore because of what he does. This isn't a sport -- it's outright animal abuse.
If you look none of the shots were at his head, it was a tranq gun.If it was a real one it would have been dead. I have a feeling this was taken out of context by some crazy animal group.
Any time man has to react to a situation such as this and finds it necessary to use an animal as a scape goat the game has to end. There is no fucking game more important than an the life of an innocent animal. Man kind has got to wake up and realize they are fucking everything up.
Every thing in mans mind is indispensable. It's easier to throw something away and buy another one. And man wonders why the end is near. This is just one more ignorant things in a long line to the end result.
that was a tranquilizer it was to sedate the horse not kill it...some horses lash out violently at a vet and they are treated differently than a horse who stands quietly for vet care for human safety.

The race course tried to cover it up, but failed.
macimagesphotography 2 days ago
If they destroy a horse right there on the track the damage is irreversible and the animal is in extreme pain. These owners have poured thousands of dollars into the training and care of these athletes so if there was anything that could have ben done, I'm sure they would have. They're not empty headed, ignorant, emotional, animal rights activists who know nothing about the sport like you.

Syncraftable 1 week ago
@Syncraftable Nor would I, but it is done unfortunately...
honjlh 6 days ago
Two things.
Syncraftable 1 week ago
These are horrible pictures and the worst vet ever. This is not the way to end it´s life. It´s terrible already in the first place but doing it like this is criminal.
Saartje05 1 week ago
they should have done lethal injection as the only option of putting the horse down instead of making it suffer through three shots, ignorant and a horrible vet.
Fordgurl101 1 week ago

PlumagedPower 1 week ago
@PlumagedPower People who say racing is cruel are NOT idiots. That's their own opinion. It is mine, too. It doesn't have to be through fault of humans, but in racing it is. The humans are the reason the horse is racing, so therefore it is their fault that the horse should fall in such circumstances. And racing is purely for the enjoyment of HUMANS, so they can bet etc. The horses can do the exact same thing in their paddocks or whatever, with other horses, if they wish.
RandomIsTheWord 1 week ago
@PlumagedPower Some horses are practically beaten while they race, to get them to go that bit faster, to win the race, to win that much more money... for the humans. ''With so many horses in the world you there's bound to be some casualty'' - yes, but racing is only a catalyst in this and will make it even MORE likely.
RandomIsTheWord 1 week ago
My guess whatever it was just spooked the animal not hurt it, if you have ever had the misfortune of seeing an animal shot in the head like with people there is a stupid amount of blood since there is a lot of blood pumped to the head so yeah that animal was not shot with a gun, most likely a bolt gun miss fired causing the horse to spook. Which is strange cause i thought most tracks now use injection to euthanize though perhaps not all places can afford the drug so would explain the gun.
PlumagedPower 1 week ago

Nizingur 2 weeks ago
@crazypizzahorse234 It may not have been a break he could recover from. Many breaks, while they can heal, can cause more problems for the horse. The chance of the horse developing Laminitis is great, because they have to shift their weight to the remaining 3 good legs, which is EXTREMELY painful for the horse, and they would have to be put down anyways because once that happens they will be suffering.

rathmiron 3 weeks ago

MrRedlet 2 weeks ago 6
@MrRedlet lets hope you don't end up in a wheel chair eh? It doesn't have to be torture - keep lots of other horses around, keep him amused with things, music, people, a companion goat in his stall. Don't feed him like he's a meat cow. In the past it used to be a year in a sling but now they can bolt it up. The only reason they don't is because the horse's career is over so no money in it. Should have better insurance policies.
trogirogir9 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9 I see your point and I agree that they should have better policies, however the risk of a horse not surviving the anaesthesia to have it's leg bolted is 1 in 10, the slightest pressure on the leg will displace the bone slightly meaning it will take much longer to heal and it may have to be realigned so there's a very slim chance of it being a straightforward procedure, or even successful. And no, I hope I do not end up in a wheelchair.
MrRedlet 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9 Oh, and bone is the only tissue in the body which, when healed, regains almost 100% normal function, so the horse's career isn't over if the recovery is successful.
MrRedlet 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9 it's in my nature to give a horse every chance to live but if a horse had to be strung from the ceiling then it is basically torture to a horse. music, toys, people. there's only so much they can do to keep a horse calm. my gelding tore his tendon sheath and was on stable rest for 3 months he had horses stabled next to him and i spent hours every day out grooming him etc he was still miserable. look at barbero - he got laminitis and he was nearly ready to go home
iqreevo 2 weeks ago
@iqreevo If your horse lives to 45 then those 3 months were definitely worth it! Laminitis is caused purely by what the horse eats, they should have sourced different hay. The hay grass shouldn't be fertilized, the grass type should be different. The hay should be harvested later with less protein from the seeds but horses can't cope with high protein their whole lives. Laminitis is so sad but it's so prevalent in the US because the agricultural industry revolves around cattle fodder.
trogirogir9 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9 luckily his tendon injury wasnt as serious as a stapped bone with the tendons and ligaments torn away as well which happens to most racers... and my shetlend pony is in his 30's and i'd be thrilled if my fellow lived to be in his 30's or 40's but honestly i have a heart and i couldnt watch my horse being in unbearable pain confined to a stall without being able to walk with the possibility of never being able to run... i'd do the kindest thing and let him go.
iqreevo 2 weeks ago
@iqreevo snapped* bone
iqreevo 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9 An average horse DOES NOT live to 45. That's like a person living to be 100. The average is mid-late 20s. You are thinking of Foundering, not Laminitis. Laminitis is caused by many things, including too much pressure on a particular hoof, like when one leg is broken or another hoof is damaged and they have to switch their weight to the other hoof.
Laminitis is not curable. The best you can do is get special shoes for them, and pain meds, and that doesn't always work.
honjlh 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9 VERY rarely do horses ever make it to 45. The normal lifespan of a horse is into its mid 20s. For an animal thats instict tells it that it must be on its feet to avoid danger from the time it is born... Hanging it in a sling for an entire year is more torture than anything else. And very rarely do they actually sling a horse (someone has been watching too much "Dreamer") the horse will be in a cast, and likely develop Laminitis, at which point they will truely suffer.
honjlh 2 weeks ago
@trogirogir9

If the horse were actually shot 3 times in the head there would be A LOT of blood on both horse, and vet, which there isn't.
honjlh 4 weeks ago 19
@honjlh Absolutely agreed. There would be much more blood. But on principle, a bolt gun is a more humane way of killing a horse than a lethal injection. It's quick and the horse doesn't know what hit him. With a lethal injection, it's slow and the horse is conscious as he falls. I'd rather have my baby taken by an excellent marksman than by injection.
Nizingur 2 weeks ago
@Nizingur Well the sad truth is that a bolt gun doesn't usually kill, but just stun. But it is enough to stun the horse while they give the injection so it doesn't feel it. I've done rescue and with it comes the possiblity of rescuing horses who are beyond help, and have no quality of life, so we have had to put horses down, and it's never easy.. But injection is not always quick and effective like they say. It can take many minutes while the horse gasps for breath and struggles.
honjlh 2 weeks ago
Thanks for sharing that little tidbit I always presumed from what i see on TV (I know bad source of info right there) That once the injection is administered the animal simply falls asleep. perhaps they only struggle when the dosage is too small? i would imagine it can be hard with large animals like horses who weight and size can vary to get the dosage right. which would explain why stunning beforehand would be necessary. I actually feel bad for the vet that's a tough job.
PlumagedPower 1 week ago
@PlumagedPower Sadly "simply falling asleep" is not usually the case. If you get a really kind vet like the one we use, they will use a "double dose" so that it is very quick and effective. But it's the same with all animals really. Injection doesn't always act quickly, and sometimes requires multiple doses. And when that happens, it's never a pretty sight.
And yes, it is quite hard on the vet, or at least the ones that still care, but they know that it's best for the animal.
honjlh 1 week ago
@honjlh fix the problem????? They wanted to kill the horse but for some reason they were too cheap or lazy to give it the leathal injection right away! Instead they tortured this animal for ten minutes! and you know why? Because it would never race again.

The question is, good vet or bad vet. If you agree with bad vet then repost. Its not about trainers, owners, its about the way the racing industry treats horses. And just to make it clear, the trainer had no idea what happened to this horse until he saw the images, which was not what the race course told him.
macimagesphotography 1 month ago
I'm guessing that they couldn't get close enough for a lethal injection to begin with, is that why they tried to shoot first? They're only still shots but it looked like the horse was standing calmly enough to stick instead of shoot it. And wouldn't a shot to the head kill it instantly? I don't know really anything about hunting or shooting so idk what it takes to kill a large animal with a gun.

You can make the foolish choice of risking the horse even more suffering by throwing all sorts of screws and pins in and hope that the horse even makes it out of anesthesia (Barbaro), but that would be the inhumane choice.

Tammyx90 1 month ago
@robertstokes52 I do not treat my two horses like shit! they have the best of everything, are very well loved and seem very happy to me saying as they nicker everytime i drive on the yard (yes they no the sound of my car) 1 of my horses is a ex-racehorse, i took him on after his racing carrer and now he competes, hacks, jumps and plays out in the field with his friends.. If you leave a horse stood with a un-fixable broken leg that is animal cruelty
Tammyx90 1 month ago
Why can't they just do the lethal injection first instead of shooting the horse in the head THREE TIMES?!

Well that is the irish fggots that do that in america they are sometimes saved but if injured badly they will be put down

Do people seriously think they shoot a racehorse with a gun? Morons if they are, utter morons
lukeyboy1325 1 month ago

Tammyx90 1 month ago
@tammyx90 your dumb ass horse shouldn't be on the road, it should be in a field not carting your fat ass around
swingmaster360 1 month ago
And on a final note, its not just racehorses that break legs!
OVER 1000 HORSES GET PUT DOWN EACH YEAR AFTER BEING HIT MY CARS/VANS ECT, NEXT TIME YOU DRIVE PAST A HORSE ***PASS WIDE AND SLOW***...***KILL YOUR SPEED NOT MY HORSE***
Tammyx90 1 month ago
@VxdVxn Its not like we carnt be botherd tryin to fix our horses broken bones! I dont no how i'd cope if my baby had to be out down but i do no i coulnt watch him being stuck in a sling for months on end, then still being on months of box rest, then not being able to turn him out with his friends incase he starts running about putting to much strain on his leg and brakes it again! Horses aint dogs. Ive seen a horse with a broken leg and its awfull, they fall and panic and usally do more damage!!
Tammyx90 1 month ago
@Tammyx90 I wouldnt shoot my child cause I cant bear the thought of them being down and out in a hospital bed after an almost fatal car accident. Some people give up too easily... or maybe it's just a money problem. Anything is fixable unless it's incurable and eventually fatal. I know horses arent dogs, and they arent people, etc, etc... anything is possible, regardless of species.
VxdVxn 1 month ago
But he wasn't shot.... No horses are shot on course, thats ridiculous! Also all the muppets saying racing is cruel, do some research first, the amount of time, money, love and attention that goes into looking after a horse far surpasses that of one in a field, and people that say horses don't like running they are forced to.... If a horse doesn't want to run, he won't run simple as, it's a horse, a jockey is a man, it's clear who is coming out on top there....
lukeyboy1325 1 month ago
@lukeyboy1325 I'm sure if you are a horse you rather be free to roam about in the wild rather than your so called TLC race horse life.
zakubabyboy 1 month ago
@zakubabyboy No id rather be cared for on hand and foot by a stable lass/lad that loves you more than anything in the world that be confined in a field or in the wild....
lukeyboy1325 1 month ago
@lukeyboy1325 how many of the horses you are looking after are over 30 years old? Surely after you've been working for a few years most of the horses you are looking after will be retired? Where are the stable lads & lasses then? I bet you only have 1 or 2 oldies on your yard, or even none. Horses live till their 45 years old.
trogirogir9 2 weeks ago

And further more, the people's faces aren't distressed and their shirts are clean of blood.

holy shit are people ever retarded, im in the race horse business and all i hear from people that just look at it from the outside is how terrible of a sport it is, well guess what.. its called sport of kings for a reason, you have no idea how much dedication goes into horse racing, and please.. do you really think a public place would shoot a horse? no, because its against policy first of all and second of all thats just plain wrong, good bye.
victoriannexoxo 2 months ago 17
@victoriannexoxo i'm tired of it to!!!!! All people ever say is "oh well horse racing is wrong they run there horses heart out and then slaughter them!" Well news flash to people who think that horse racing is a sport the horses want to run! like secretariat, ruffian, babaro, seattle slew, rachel alexandra, zenyatta. They ALL loved to run and they WERENT slaughtered! There althetes just like US!
alexisbarrelracer12 1 month ago
@victoriannexoxo Is that what you think about people that don't like the business you are in,,Retarded.!! It does actually go with the snobbery and sole business ethic of your trade, people that love horses ride them down country lanes, not breed and race them to within an inch of their lives, straddle conceivable hurdles.and discard them once they have become unprofitable.Sport of Kings, the higher classes,wealth..also responsible for other murderous animal cruelty.Disgusting!!!

Ur all idiots if u were a horse and had a broken leg would u rather stumble in pain or put out of ur missiry
spader148 2 months ago
To all the people asking why they could not 'fix the horse'... horses are not like dogs, they can not happily hop around with a cast on for a few months, they need all four legs to move about, is it nice to leave a horse stood in his box for months on end with a cast on? then once its healed to get chromic arthritis with in years yet again leaving it to stand 24/7 in its stable??
We horse owners love our horses but we have to look at there future!! I would never want my boy confinded to his box!

Charandbobbie 2 months ago
@Tammyx90 Humans get broken legs and yet we dont put them down because we dont want to see them cooped up in the house until it's healed. I just hate how people can play god with animals, but when it comes to humans we do everything in our power to make sure they make it out ok.
VxdVxn 1 month ago
@VxdVxn Maybe you should try and force a horse ro stand in a stall 24/7. Impossible task and it's more animal cruelty than putting it down and ending it's pain. Humans are selfish I agree but remember, you're a human too so you can't really blame it on others.
WolfCreekCity 1 month ago
@Tammyx90 But you have to bear in mind some injuries do not cause permanent damage, a friend of mine had a horse with a broken leg, but instead of "putting it out of it's misery" she nursed it back to health and a few years later won her reserve champion at a country show, I think it depends on each individual wound and the owner's willingness to do what would be best, the easiest solution, shoot the bastard, but not always the most beneficial.
Angel89Ninja 1 month ago
@Tammyx90 Why would wwe need to shoot horses in the first place? i mean fair enough, if a horse breaks its leg somehow on its own, but we humans treat them like shit, make them race to feed our gambling addictions.. we break their legs, then we kill the.. you can say an bullyshit you want, if you shoot a horst. you're a murderer.
robertstokes52 1 month ago
@Tammyx90 The horse is lame. . . it didn't break a leg, and besides, even if it did they could have still saved him. My horse has come up lame a couple of times. Did i kill him? no. was he always in his "box". No. He healed. I ride him a lot! ans He runs and jumps and plays ALL the time now. He is happy and living a happy life. It's like us pulling a musce for them.
complexgirl13 1 month ago
@Tammyx90
/: they should of giving it the injection in the first place instead of shooting it where it was still alive but only more in pain.
BreyerProductions 1 month ago
Try a fucking 30-06 next time, it can kill a deer in one shot. Were they using a pistol? Are you serious? It takes 3 shots from a 9mm to kill a PERSON, not a horse.

@whichypoohs some vets r bad. my horse got her ears twisted by a vet.
lilhorsegurl 2 months ago
Unfortunately, it is very common for horses to be killed in this sport by it's owner if it comes up lame for whatever reason, or it doesn't win or bring in any money for them. My father in law races thoroughbreds, and I've known him to sell a horse for slaughter, just because it wasn't winning enough for him. Needless to say, he and I don't get along very well anymore because of what he does. This isn't a sport -- it's outright animal abuse.
jd1424 2 months ago 2
@jd1424 this is a very good comment that really goes to the heart of the matter.
U r a good person to break the pattern of use and abuse. What we do to other living beings on the earth is beyond insanity.

If you look none of the shots were at his head, it was a tranq gun.If it was a real one it would have been dead. I have a feeling this was taken out of context by some crazy animal group.
wanttoseemysnake 2 months ago
Any time man has to react to a situation such as this and finds it necessary to use an animal as a scape goat the game has to end. There is no fucking game more important than an the life of an innocent animal. Man kind has got to wake up and realize they are fucking everything up.

Every thing in mans mind is indispensable. It's easier to throw something away and buy another one. And man wonders why the end is near. This is just one more ignorant things in a long line to the end result.
