Why Can't People Be Cunts?

My theory is that society always needs "a sacred expletive" by which I mean a swear word which everyone knows about but which is never spoken in case that would "kill the magic". A bit like Muslims not wanting to see a portrayal of Mohamed or something. Once a sacred expletive is found in general discourse then society has to invent a new one. A bit like "the love that never speaks it's name" I suppose.

I think the word cunt is more acceptable in the UK than in America. Its not ok for people to call you a "queer, fag, homo" just as it's not ok to call a black person the N-word, OR using the phrase "blood libel" to play the victim.... however, to me, the word "cunt" is just a level above bitch. I've an aversion to it because it was considered very taboo on BOTH sides of my family for some reason. And because I was raised hearing almost every other word but that; and hearing a story about an uncle being smacked with a ring over it, I never could bring myself to say it. Thank you for posing this question because I have always been curious. I think it's a combination of the fact that by using the word cunt--already regarded as a word for vagina--it reduces a woman to being reduced to a body part. And so many women are so easy to offend!

So, as a female, I should be upset to hear the word as it is a derogatory word. But what is a derogatory word? Something we have been programmed to think is bad? I think this raises more questions.
