  • i think it's safe to say that matthew sweet pioneered the art of the AMV.

  • increible gema de powerpop...por muchos,muchos,muchisimos años.....

  • its kind of sad that Lum is the only thing people remember from Urusei Yatsura, since she wasn't that funny, she mostly just got the ball running for all the funny characters

  • @khayal101 Yeah, so....you're in the wrong place for such ruminations.

  • I remember seeing this video playing on a TV at a Sears when I was young. Kind of funny that I seen a little Urusei Yatsura before I really got into anime.

  • Lum?? Watchu doing in a music video?

  • this suck!!!!!

  • @bluewind1313 this not BlueWind cup of tea?

  • Essential jangle pop

  • Man, this was back when we called it Japanimation...

  • Luv luv luv this song...listen to it at least once a day on my ipod! takes me back to my university days in the early 90s

  • lum :'(

  • Groovy jangle-pop masterpiece!

  • lmao

  • So takes me back. There is nothing Like Matt Sweet again. WHERE ARE U?

  • still love this song :)

  • is this anime porn

  • @funinthesun1394 No. This anime is "Urusei Yatsura", based on a comic with same name. The comic is one of the early works by Rumiko Takahashi, Japanese comic artist. She has also wrote "Ranma 1/2" and "InuYasha". She is know as a hit-maker in Japan. Her works are popular in US Otaku. Not porn.

  • @funinthesun1394

    no, just a comedy.

  • AMAZING !!! Thank you!!

  • cool.

  • great Pop song

  • SCRubs ;D

  • MUST GRAB CD NOW!!!!! *runs to toronto cd stores*

  • This song actually makes me cry every time I listen to it, it is that good.

  • 3:23 - when she wakes up (?) in the wrap - anyone know which movie or episode that was from?

  • @CarolinePar That was from UY Movie 1 - Only You. In fact, many (but not all) of the clips appear to be from Movie 1. Some are altered to look like Lum, but are not really, such as walking out of the water into the cloak held by the maids. The woman's hair is too short, and I am pretty sure should be bright red.

  • @CoderjoeIsTaken

The dragonfly scene is from UY movie 4 "Lum the Forever". The bouncing rabbits are from "Inaba the Dream Maker" OVA. Also the scene where Lum is stepping out of the bath is most likely from UY movie 5 "Kanketsuhen (The Final Chapter). And there are also scenes from UY movie 2 "Beautiful Dreamer". The guitar solo's animation is entirely from "Lum the Forever" (my favorite movie). *sigh* Time for me to go back and watch the movies and even the OVAs. UY fan forever.

  • @Tobimar

The scene where a girl is coming out of the bath is Elle in movie 1 with her hair color changed. Here is the scene: watch?v=vbYjK3RsHic&t=0m30s

  • Shroom fart at 0:08

  • Matthew Sweet: Creator of the AMV

    True story.

  • "I didn't think I'd find you perfect in so many ways! But I've been waiting (Waiiitiiing) And I want to (haaaaaaaaave youuuuuuuuu)! I've been waiting (Waiiitiiing) And I want to..."

  • 日本に生まれてたら庵野になってた逸材だな

  • I remember seeing the anime before the video. Many people didn't know about Lum so when I made up my moniker, I added lady so people would know I was female.

  • hey there! i am german... normaly germans cant watch this! support hotspotshield to help germans watch videos like this one!

  • Honestly the cartoon chick is hot, but luckliberty, what you just said was absoloute bullcrap

  • This video is so awesome.

  • Matthew Sweet ahead of his time with anime - he never got the level of success that he should have for his gorgeous songs

  • One of the reasons i like matthew sweet, besides his music) is because he seems to be an anime fan, and being an anime fan myself, that earns him a big thumbs up in my book. But I am embarassed to admit that I don't recognize the anime being used in this video, can someone tell me what it is please?

  • @pacifistattack It's Urusei Yatsura, and the girl's name is Lum.. You can watch the anime tv series and movie on youtube.. just type "urusei yatsura" or "(HD) Urusei Yatsura" for the HD version..

  • thumbs up if "Scrubs" brought you here

  • Behold, the original AMV.

  • @Vincanni

Daicon IV gets that title actually, as it predates this by about 9 years. This was probably the better known one outside Japan though.

  • i remember when this song was popular in the 90's and anime went over big with me at that time. it kind of helped to push me further into my interest within the culture.

  • Ahhhh, a perfect slice of power pop that goes down nicely at the end of the day.

  • Most of the time "pop music" and "badass" don't go in the same sentence, but I am willing to make exception here.

  • This has got to be the most sincere display of Lumophilia I've ever seen. I'd expect these kinds of earnest verses from Megane himself. Who says being a fanboy is counter-productive?

  • The sound quality is "Sweer" in "I've Been waiting," by Matthew Sweet. I don't usually like Aime characters like LUM, but she seems like the perfect girl to use for a song about a lonely girl awiating her true love. The song suggests that perfectly to her style. Great post!

  • パワーポップまた流行んないかな。こんぐらいが気持ちいい。

  • Byrdsy and luvly

  • Gonna but this albumm tomarrow, I know I won't be let dowm.

  • @obscurebandfan "Buy" and "album" , sorry.

  • He has a tattoo of lim ya know. :D

  • Awww, don't cry Lum !

  • God, why don't they make music like this anymore!!!!!!

  • @jazzinnature081 answer: grunge, crap-metal, metal, death cab for cutie.

  • 1:08-1:11 That's not Lum. It's Elle from the first UY Movie with Lum's hair color

  • I remember when this came out, and am glad someone posted it...

    ...but...

....did anyone notice there's no shots of ataru?

    who directed this?!?

    i'd blame matthew, but... i think there was a lecherous Lum fan behind the scenes -.-;

    (or it was Matt...)

  • this whole cd was outstanding

  • I remember seeing him in 1998, he was great in concert.

  • Is it true that Matthew Sweet has a Lum tatoo?

  • @nightcrawler1234 yup! well ok i haven't seen the tattoo myself but i read he has it

  • omg! this is the first Artist that i know that use Anime in his videos!*-*! awesome!!

    :D!!!

  • 世界一の変態ソング。美しすぎるのが、頭の病気っぽい。この天才はどこへ行ってしまったんだ?

  • this viedo is crazy!lol! great song!

  • If it weren't for this video, I would have never started drawing comics and animating. Lum is the greatest!

  • I figured out what this song is about. Japanime blow jobs.

  • It's so inspiring to see my second favorite show and my second favorite character in the history of anime being used in a legit music video. Lum RULES!

  • 0:33 Yum, yum, bubble Lum!

  • just curious what is LUM about?

  • Lum is the main character of an anime called Urusei Yatsura, create by Rumiko Takahashi.

    AS really funny anime ^-^

  • VERY. But only subtitled, the translation of the manga isn't very good.

  • jangle goodness

  • one of the best songs ever written i showed my 9 year old kid this she knows the song by heart.

  • One of the most perfect pop songs ever written.

  • ok so in all seriousness, is this the first amercian AMV?

  • nah, that would probably be the video for 'girlfriend' which was the first single from this album. hahahahaha

  • @luckliberty Me too, buddy, me too.

  • @luckliberty Go to a good anime convention, you will find a lot of HOT cosplay women.

  • @luckliberty

    I wish you could too.

  • @luckliberty

    I know right

  • Urusei Yatsura~~!! <3 This guy OWNS for putting scenes from a Rumiko Takahashi manga/anime in his music video. :D Best mangaka ever~! <3

  • I totally agree with you. This is my all time favorite anime ever. I really hope they bring it back. Anime/manga weren't really cared for back then, but now its the best out there. I heard theres supposed to be an OVA for UY in 2010.

  • omg rly?? :D

  • Yeah, Im not sure exactly when but im keeping an ear out. I'll let you know when I do.

  • incorporating japanamese into his videos- this video is old- this was groundbreaking

  • This and Girlfriend are really cool... I mean classics like Lum and Cobra? Guy's got good taste.

  • Rumiko TAKAHASHI is the wealthest mangaka.

  • what ever happened to the girlfriend music video?

  • He has a great voice and writes a killer guitar hook. What a great, underappreciated talent Sweet is.

  • Definitely a very underrated talented American musician.

  • @chimizklan I say that every day.

  • @chimizklan I agree.

  • what's the anime in the background?

  • Urusei Yatsura

  • It's from Urusei Yatsura Movie 3: Remember My Love

  • There are only two possible explanations:

    1. Everyone who watches movies and listens to music is a "total fucking loser" and a "dumbfuck"

    or

    2. emmtampax has a wire hanger stuck to its forehead from the time its mom tried to abort him, which makes it prematurely-ejaculate "dumbfuck" Tourettes.

  • One of his best...flows so well, hits so true, feel like it is meant for your girlfriend!

  • that was the best loving thing ive seen all day

  • Matthew Sweet has a really unique voice.. I was taken with his music wayyy back in the 90's.. he loves classic anime, and has a tattoo of Lum :P

His other huge hit "Girlfriend" features an older anime movie called "Space Adventure Cobra"... you can find it on dailymotion.

  • I want a Lum tattoo~! <3

  • The "Girlfriend" album videos influenced the anime boom of the late 90s "in so many ways"

  • Matt played for lloyd cole (his first few solo CDs are Perfect ..skin) and this is a fine song - but not a great as my fav song - I've been waiting for you - by Neil Young - the CD version is hypnotic and so overlooked.

  • This song is perfect in so many ways

  • マシュー君タトゥまだありますか?名曲だっちゃ。

  • I've always been surprised at how much i liked that dude, what w/ the pop-ness & all, but he is awesome. Saw him many years back, but his throat was bust & he could barely make croaky sounds. Snoozers!

  • LUM forever!!

  • god i love matthew sweet. This song is one of my favorites and this video is beautifully done. No one really does music videos like this anymore, using animation especially anime (unless you count AMVs as real music videos, p.s. they're not)

  • XD jajajajajj jajajajajajaj

    funny comment XD

  • it really is

  • hahaha, so true

  • this whole album was amazing and i love Matthew Sweet! There are no words!

  • i loveeee this song.

    so wonderful.

and plus it was on scrubs :)

  • his voice is very unique.what a great set of pipes,i'm waiting for him to do another thornbirds album on that standout matthew sweet album.i think this song has a great hook

    love it.

  • This is one of those tunes no one wants to admit they liked ...but many do..catchy...

  • And you are listening to it... because... ?

  • Love this song!

  • "haikai no ku"

  • Whoaa ^^

Matthew Sweet + Lum = Very good video =D

I heard he's even got a tattoo of her on his arm!

  • A brilliant song from one of the most underated albums of all time. I love it!!

  • reminds me of PamdaBear

  • I've watched a lot of animation. After all, "Urusei Yatsura" is the best one.

  • She's obviously a Flying, Electric Pokémon. She surpasses Zapdos by being the secret SUPER Legendary type! In order to capture her, you actually have to find the hidden UFO in Pallet Town to travel to planet Oni. GameFAQs can help you with further details!

  • hahahaha best comment EVER!

  • yeh i agree,ha ha

  • it's urusei yatsura

  • damn....i feels like i'm back in 1992

  • heehee I love the mushrooms behind him ^^ awesomeness! Im glad he made this! it totally applies to lum' and ataru's relationship I heard he has a tattoo of lum on him somehwere. Love him! great song, man, and GREAT taste in anime

  • I seen hin @ a club called Bogarts in Cincinnati three times and would go again for songs like these. I was in junior high when this came out. I'm going to go buy a copy of Girl Friend again, the ex took mine when she left.

  • One of my favorite Richard Lloyd guitar solos.

  • Oh Matthew... SING TO ME!

  • Pure Melodic Pop Pleasure!

  • make your own then

  • Putting Anime in videos before it was commonplace...the man is truly ahead of his time. :)

  • Not a bad song, and they used some good Lum footage.

  • One of my very favorite songs. Have always been enchanted by the video too and I'm not even a big fan of anime. Matthew Sweet is truly "sweet" too. Got to meet him several years ago. Very gracious and kind-hearted guy. Truly gifted songwriter and musician. Love Matthew!!!

  • It's a crime that Matthew Sweet wasn't more successful (he was moderately popular, but deserved more). Some of the best songs of the 90s.

  • doesn't matthew sweet have a tattoo of lum or something?

  • last I checked, he does

  • Yup. It's funny, he's always said he's not much of an anime fan, but enjoys Urusei Yatsura.

  • I guess I'm a loser I like anime. But I like this matthew sweet song too.

  • Lum is so hot!!!!

  • Sweet has always liked animation and at times it gets to be a bit annoying. Fantastic song though.

  • This video thrust Anime into the mainstream for young adults when it first came out and had a hand in the mid-90s boom...for better or for worse. Better in that it exposed really good and funny anime like this to the world, but bad in the fact that it also created the "otaku" and "cosplayers".

  • This guy's just full of catchy tunes. Cool:)

  • Jeez. I must've first seen this video when I was 8 or something, in a clothing department store. It freaked me out cause the only anime I had ever seen was from ads for Turbo Graphix games. I made a point to remember it though, and now here it is, on youtube. Thanks for uploading!

  • Back on topic: Matthew Sweet is the MAN. No excesses, no showoffs just solid good no-frills retro pop rock. Subtlety is a virtue.

  • First real concert I saw in 2001 ...they were do good I though they were from Mars or something! lol

  • a couple comments. Youtube is the destroyer of the amv community there are no standards for quality. Animemusicvideosdotorg is the home of the good amvs. As for this video it was the first time I ever saw lum. This was on mtv in like 92? when I didnt like anime. I got into anime in 99 and 2 years later I rediscovered my precious lum chan.

  • animemusicvideosdotorg blows.

  • As much as you do?

  • Is there something you know about me that you're not telling? I happen to have been a member of AMVdotorg and I found that the community blows. I don't like the smug attitudes, the racist comments that go unchastised and other aspects that made me embarrassed to be an AMV creator. I don't care if you've appointed yourself the protector of the org or not. The place blows and there are a lot of crappy AMVs there as well as the good ones.

  • Uncle milo uncle milo lol your the commie from the org the micheal moron worshipper. Anyway that was off topic it's been closed down for years.

  • Wow! You can't spell, you're clearly a lapdog of the Republican terrorist organization and you worship AMVdotOrg like some pathetic fanatic. You're too stupid to know what a commie is and you think my arguments hang on one single thread on a message board. Truly you are a prime example of why AMVORG sucks the donkey. Just like Lum.

  • Better Lum sucking my donkey than Micheal moore.

  • Well, I'm sure that's the fantasy you're jerkin' to... and Michael Moore's rich... you'd be the one beggin' to do the suckin'. Hee hee... you're so pathetic... it makes me laugh... this is fun! Hope you keep posting your stupidity!

  • Well you must have some good points to you somewhere because you like this video. Post something in my messages.

  • I know how you feel, UncleMilo. There's alot of people there who are assholes. It's pathetic. And when you make something they don't like, they're like "Please, just die already" or some other crap like that. Shit, this one person asked me if I ever tried suicide!!!!!

  • No, it really does blow. Trying to get a good rating there is like trying to score a recording contract with a major record label.

  • By the way, the guitarist is Richard Lloyd, formerly of the seminal NY punk band Television.
