Hi Pete. I have the same MBPro and have same graphic chip problem. I took it to the Apple care center and they said they cant replace the chip or re-pair it they have to change whole logic board to fix this problem . New logic board is almost 50% of the new laptop price :( .

My question is Can i change it with new chip or reball it ? I have a friend who does it professionally . I am asking it coz the Apple care guy told me its impossible in apple laptops the change whole logic board to fix it.

The Nvidia issue is covered by apple under a extended warranty program. If it boots without picture go to a Certified Apple repair center. They can run a test and see if it's the Nvidia issue, if so it'll be fixed free of charge. O, and it has to be younger then 4 years.

When I would hook my toshiba laptop to another monitor, it still works perfectly fine and that's the reason I bought Macbook for upgrade I guess. Reflows dont last that long. 3 months in most cases and the problem returns even with your achi pro sc rework machine

@reply4reply We only reflow when a customer asks for the cheapest solution, if they want to keep it for a long time we always put a new chip..

We keep a large stock of new BGA chips on hand, its very common to do a chip swap..

I dont like to reball as it takes a lot of time and 9 times out of 10 the new chips last longer too.

Reflow is getting the solder to the melt point to renew its connection with the board. That teamed with cleaning it out and putting in good thermal paste it keeps it running nice and cool

at 13:20 those thermal sponges you mentioned turn into this "nastiness" after excessive use. I don't know how to describe it, other than a "booger." I honestly think HP design their machines to fail.

It's also not only to do with the heatsink being clogged up with dust but to do with the lead free solder cracking under dramatic thermal stress (another reason why you shouldn't apply cooling to the chip after its been reflown).

We fixed over 4000 systems this year and many were from other computer shops that couldn't do the repair.

nice useful videos... Do the New macbook pros get the same heating problem? Mine gets very hot sometimes and I worry about the Expanding and contracting of certain materials inside... I just put a cold face cloth underneath to absorbe the excess heat.

The Graphics card in my PC also started to have a melt down, I knew it was an overheating issue when I started see artifacting in the right hand corner of the screen... What do I do about this? I live in Scotland.
