@laurysocheerful Use twice as much liquid (broth or water) as you use of rice. Bring the liquid to a boil. Add the rice. Cover. Reduce heat to low and cook, covered, 14 minutes, or until liquid is absorbed.
@ndnflava I keep clean jars under my sink. I use them to contain used grease or deep-fry oil that I don't plan to use again. When they fill up, I put them in the garbage, which gets hauled off. It's a clean, neat way to dispose of something you can't just pour down the sink.
@bettyskitchen Here, where I live (in the greater Toronto area of Ontario, Canada), the city sent out some information for the new organics recycling program last year, which suggests that we freeze unwanted cooking oils & greases until they're solid, and then put the solid grease with other organics in our green bins, to be placed by the curb so the recycling trucks can haul it off.
thank you betty...you have a happy, & prosperous new year as well !! always love your cooking, & your vids are always very uplifting, & inspiring !! im a musician here in dallas tx, so im hoping its a good yr for musicians!! peace, god bless, & keep cookin'!!!.. BW
Our family cook blackeye peas also for the new years.. We have every year... We normally get ours from the bag... It just takes hours to cook but its damn good.
@memyselfandINICH If it were a side dish, the main course could be ham, chick, turkey, pork, anything, and then you would probably add some vegetables and bread. I plan to serve mine tomorrow (for my small family) as a main course, and I will have cornbread sticks and a green salad to go with it.
Great share Betty I'll have to try this it looks easy and delicious. Thank you for sharing I really enjoy your food videos a favorite channel to visit!!
If u are going to use a canned brand of something then "Luck's" is a very good brand to use. However I prefer to cook my own blackeyed peas.
I have always heard that the blackeyes peas were a tradition for good luck for New Year's not messacarily the "Hoppin John" but I guess that would be a good way of fixin up the blackeyed peas.
Looks to me like it could have used another can of blackeyed peas with all that rice. To me it might even be better with about 1/2 lb ground round fried up & add
Thanks betty. a friend of mine posted in facebook that she was having that ... i haven't had it before that i remember...but i'd like to try it (again?)... Have a great NEW YEAR BETTY!
