  • A big WOW. Kudos, Lea Salonga!

  • wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

  • I Just have to tell you, that in your credits, Sandy in Grease's last name is Olsson, Not Dombrowski... LOL

  • wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • is this lea salonga singing?

  • this is Hayley Westenra

  • @Mrdv904k hahaha Hayley was just a child when Lea recorded this just so you know.

  • @neoclassicalmusic Westenra has serious articulation issues when she speaks and sings. She needs to take speech lessons from Salonga.

  • This is not an operatic song, but a religious one...written for a Broadway voice, not an operatic one, although an operatic voice can do it. Usually, Sarah Brightman does it, and that girl from Wales, C. Church. The whole 'Requeim' needs some operatic voices, but this song, does not. It is supposed to be done sweetly and gently, as the words profess. Was not badly done, but was not opera or Broadway....but somewhere in between.

  • It's not opera but it was VERY VERY well done. :)

  • i wonder if there's just an audio for this, it melted my heart the way she sung it.. so angelic..

  • Outstanding tenor Daniel Rodriguez blending beautifully with Lea on this one.

  • @musicteach99 I love daniel rodriguez.

  • Requiem was actually composed by Andrew for his father's eulogy mass service.

  • I admire Lea's artistry and how she handles her craft but this song doesn't fit her voice and range; yes it's not from an opera but it requires a different technical foundation and discipline- just my two cents...

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't opera. It's Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Pop' Requiem.

  • Is this Lea Salonga?! She is amazing!

  • From what album was this lifted please? Thanks!

  • "in the presence" by Daniel Rodriguez.. Lea has 2 songs there i think and this is one of them.

  • @zergyzerg Thank you! :-)

  • wow! she can sing opera!

  • It's not actually opera, but yeah, she can sing. lol

  • Ooh... that was an f sharp...

  • Oh my god, I didn't know she had such a range!!! Wow... amazing.

  • OMG!!!!! SHE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

  • that was amazing! she has a versatile voice.

  • I don't care what these classical types say... this is outstanding. Such a heavenly voice, I can't believe it's her. =D

  • awesome

  • awesome

  • Gosh.....clap clap clap clap.....and more claps

  • I love Lea's voice but this one sounds quite dangerous. For once I'm worry her voice would crack midway :-S

  • I actually didn't know Lea had this kind of range. Even though it's not Opera, I respect her more than I did.

  • Guys please. Lea did a beautiful job! Requiem is musical theater, not an opera, and it just has songs with an operatic style. Lea was NOT trying to sing opera, and she very well knows that she's not been trained for it. What she showed here is a more "classical" style of singing, that regardless of what you want to call it, is very pleasant and delightful to the ears. It just goes to show how versatile her voice is, regardless of her specialization and training. Kudos to you Lea!!! :)

  • LEA SALONGA!!!! the best!

  • The word came from 'colorare' or 'colorazione' - Italian for "to colour, to enliven". Many bel canto roles from the 18th to 19th century require a coloratura singer.

  • A coloratura is a singer who can perform very fast, agile vocal acrobatics - i.e. elaborate ornamentation, embellishment, fast runs, etc. Their tessiturae are higher than other types of voices, and typically sing up to F6 or above. It's not exactly falsetto because they have to be able to sing up there in their full head voice, with only the highest notes tapping into whistle register for sopranos.

  • Let's not belittle other peoples comments, but musicyh I found a degree of musical snobbery in your comments over ALW and his Requiem. I accept a Requiem is not an opera, yet the musical form requires operatic voices to give the piece the justice it deserves. Sunset Boulevard is musical theatre in an operatic sense. II have no doubt that Wagner viewed the Ring Cycle as musical theatre! Because musicals usually take place in say Broadway, does that mean they are less operatic? I think not!

  • Lyrics: :D Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu, Qui tollis peccata mundi; Dona eis requiem, Dona eis requiem. Angus Dei, Angus Dei, Angus Dei, Angus Dei, Qui tollis peccata mundi; Dona eis requiem, Dona eis requiem. Sempiternam, sempiternam requiem.
  • This is beautiful. :) Way better than Charlotte Church's version-. Don't get me wrong, I think Charlotte Church has a great voice... but her technique isn't as good as Lea's. I think Brightman's version is still the best, but Lea's version is amazing.

  • Dang it!

Lea S. sure can sing ...

  • OMG..... she's is so amazing...., can't get enough of her voice...

  • amazing. her clarity is so moving. i had no idea she could do opera type.

  • wow!!! mezzo soprano!!

  • Lea Salonga is amazing!!! That's all

  • wow excellent!ganda nga ng rendition ni lea ng pie jesu. whew! what can i say?

  • I saw a TV performance by Charlotte Church with Boccelli. I liked her and I thought she could be in the British theatre or in Broadway. I could not recall Church performed in either of the 2 venues. I have no doubt Lea can act in Shakespearean drama. She is gifted with high intelligence too (her brother, Gerald, graduated summa cum laude from UCLA).

I don't want to compare Lea with Charlotte but some ignoramus posted her selfish, subjective assessment - actually belittling Lea's ability.

  • Lovely! Prefer Sarah Brightman's version though ;)

  • then go to Saqrah Brightman's video site...

  • I'm pretty sure I have the right to express my opinion, yes?

  • your opinion will serve it's purpose better if you go and praise charlotte in her viseo site.

  • My opinion was stated with the sole purpose of expression.

I do not need you to inform me whether it was effective or not, for I believe you're not, by chance, a spokesman of the Youtube community?

  • LOL... GOOD REPLY TO CoolMaple Store..lol

LEA is still the BEST.. CHARLOTTE IS ALSO GOOD BUT I PREFER LEA WAY BETTER...

  • this doesn't compare to brightman's rendition. coolmaplestore is absolutely correct.

  • People mention other singers to give a better comparison, no? How else could some people learn of a better rendition?

  • i agree with coolmaplestore.

  • Lea is the best! Sarah Brightman CAN'T sing opera. She better quit.

  • very crisp pronunciation...

  • Exactly! This is her edge oer others. Good point!

  • good.. but not as good as Charlotte church & Sarah Brightman

  • tell that to the sir lawrence olivier board..

  • well, Charlotte Church's performance is way better than this.. You know, it's okay to say that Charlotte sang this song better because her genre is in the Classical world, and Lea is only on Broadway world.. Then she tried to sang outside her world, so, it is impossible that she'll be better than a resident in that world...

But Lea's performance is good..but not as good as Charlotte church

  • "..it is impossible? I enjoy it as much as other music lovers do. I notice that most of the YT posts are inappropriately done. The praises should be in the performer's vid site but those who lack education and token of courtesy will insist their own selfish "take on things". The vid site is of Boccelli and yet some one would post that he likes Pavarotti better. Oh yeah? then go to Pavarotti's.

  • then go to charlotte's vid site..

  • musiclover1891: by classical singing standards, charlotte is not good. she doesn't have the right breathing support, which is why her voice doesn't have power and her transitions are not smooth.

For someone who's not a classical singer, Lea Salonga does very well here and is way more pleaseant to listen to than Charlotte's weak voice.

  • Would like to echo your remark and also to mention that Lani does Nessun Dorma pretty well (not really good in classical singing standard) but Lea sounds more clean and more pleasing to the ear than Lani's operatic singing....

  • wow

  • great Lea.

  • i like her version of this song than hayley coz i understand better the vocals than other singers.. it only proves that she can do anything if she wanted to.. THE BEST!

  • why some people say she's an alto?

  • because Eponine is generally an alto/mezzo role - but there's nothing to say that a soprano with a great range can't pull it off =) (Fantine is actually lower, but for some reason I've always thought it was easier for the larger ranged sopranos to pull off - I think because its more acceptable to switch into a really chesty sound... I know that there's been at least one Fantine whom also played Christine in the Phantom of the Opera - so yet more proof that if one has a big range you can do alot

  • she sounds really soprano and a bit mezzo. IMO

  • She DEFINITELY has the technique and the voice for this one

  • wow!!!!!!

  • Ms. Lea Salonga - so versatile, she can sing from Beyonce's Stand Up For Love, Mariah's Joyful, Joyful and make a big leap to an operatic aria like this - ohhh so talented and what an angelic voice!!! She's after all Alan Menken's fave Disney diva. Bravo Lea!!!

  • That's a pretty voice. I still prefer her in Mulan and Disney songs though.

But actually, this is not considered an operatic aria. It still belongs to Broadway. Andrew Lloyd Webber doesn't compose opera (Phantom of the Opera is not an opera...it's a musical :)).

  • hehehe!.. yeah..

"Phantom of the Opera is not an opera...it's a musical." This is very true. Made me laugh when you stated it, though... Ironic, isn't it...

  • Requiem IS a Classical piece though, and most editions of it are really Operas. So while this isn't technically Opera, it's really close to it I guess, as Classical.

  • This one is a Broadway piece written in the classical style, because ALW is not a classical composer.

Requiems are not operas - Mozart's Requiem isn't an opera, Faure's neither. Opera requires acting and costume - requiems don't. Just because it has vocal soloists and an orchestra doesn't mean it's opera. It's simply a sacred composition, written for funeral use. They're classical, but they're not operas. There's quite a distinction between operas and other types of classical vocal music.

  • Ah, I see. I know it's definitely not Opera, but I was saying quite close, because Classical is associated with it. You've mentioned some stuff I never knew though. Thanks!

  • What do you guys think about Hayle Westenra's version?! I'd really like to see her sing side by side with Charlotte Church. Sarah's voice is just classic. But I agree with samtihnwrong, a song like this is best sung by a child!

  • "Pie Jesu" is a special song, I don't think it's for Lea - although she has a nice voice.

I like Sarah's and Sissel's versions... but after hearing Andrew Johnston's, I think that's how "Pie Jesu" should sound... sung by a child !!!

  • Lea Salonga is really a versatile singer she can sing a broadway piece and even a opera piece caming from her heart; she is the real diva I'am planning to buy watch her cinderella musical here in the Philippines

  • I actually prefer Salonga over Brightman

  • I'm sorry, but Sarah Brightman owns this gorgeous piece of music. xD

  • Yes.. I agree with you. With Charlotte Church coming closely behind her.

  • Congratulations Lea! I love your songs forever!

i prefer your broadway songs more though.

  • We are doing this song in Choir just a Choir version tottaly NOT opera! Coolness!

  • she has a low voice this is a bit thin i agree but still good

and oh my god WHAT is that man all about lol

  • chubyskins, this song is a well-known duet. I like the man's voice.

  • All I can say is that this singer doesn't make me feel tired or HURT my ears listening to her unlike some of the so-called "opera" singers, just being honest :) Crystal clear voice par exellence! Lea sings, she does not shout.

  • Comment removed

  • Anna sings well but I still prefer Lea's voice due to its lightness/smoothness in it but that's just my own opinion and you're entitled to your own opinion too. What's good about music is that you're free to choose whatever or whoever you want to listen to. As for the so-called opera singers, I didn't generalized them; I said "some" :)

  • I heard this song on the radio.

  • OMG! REALLY??!

  • di sya bagay sa opera, malambing voice nya. mas fit boses nya sa theatre/musical.

  • i so agree with you dude!

  • en is azt gondolm hogy nagyon szep! :)

  • i'm so happy that she's really a versatile singer... Amazing!!!!

  • the best.... indeed, it's really amazing to hear her singing operatic style of music! thanks for posting!

  • Wow, kaya rin ni Lea. Tho, I like the versions of Charlotte Church and Sarah Brightman more... pero sana wag na siyang ituloy mag-crossover sa classical, mas sikat na siya sa theater...

  • agree ako sayo. :) pero nakakacurious din diba kung ano kakalabasan pag nag-classical si lea.hehe :)

  • Oo nga.. pero i doubt that she could be in the range of coloratura-soprano... unlike Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church (in her classical singing days. Now, she switched to pop, para na siyang si Britney spears!)

  • Don't get me wrong but i am a big fan of Lea, ever since her Klim Commercial. hahaha. She was like 6 years old in that! Sana meron siyang version ng Nella Fantasia. It would be interesting to hear her version of that song.

  • Senior!? Ouch....LOL

  • sorry po! :)

  • the best range that lea can probably play in the soprano category is a soubrette. her voice is too thin and its tessitura is not that high. in this particular piece, her voice is too thin. to be a coloratura you need a very powerful voice.

  • I agree that Lea sounds like a soubrette (or maybe a light lyric), but her voice is fine for this piece, since this piece clearly does not require a coloratura range. Also, I won't deny that some coloraturas have powerful voices, but in general coloratura sopranos are very "delicate" vocal types. It's the mezzos, the lyric spintos, dramatic sopranos, and of course, the contraltos, with the thicker vocal folds who have the truly powerful voices.

  • i like lea better doing pop and broadway. falsetto doesn't really suits her for a recording.

  • why not use the terms coloratura or mezzo-soprano? soubrette is not even a range dude. Look it up. coloratura does not mean powerful. it's supposed to be lighter than soprano coz' of the higher range.

  • agree!

  • I think Lilith was talking about the more specific vocal types WITHIN the soprano/mezzo-soprano range. She didn't say 'soubrette range'. Coloratura is not a range either - it's a specific type of soprano. So your "it's supposed to be lighter than soprano" is incorrect use of terms. I interpreted Lilith as talking about the notes that coloraturas need to sing when she said 'coloratura range'.

  • And yes, coloraturas can have powerful voices, though of course not as loud/powerful as dramatic sopranos. There's a reason they're divided into 'lyric' and 'dramatic' coloraturas. Edita Gruberova, for one, didn't have a very 'light' timbre. Neither did Joan Sutherland. Edita is a dramatic coloratura. Compare her to Natalie Dessay, who is a lyric coloratura, and you'll hear the marked differences.

  • i think that something's missing in her opera singing...

  • it's more in the mask than it is covered.

  • for lea trying to do something new is another amazing thing. i just hope she sings as perfect in classical as when she does in broadway. i just know she can do the classical singing. how i wish id hear her singing opera someday...i love her like ever since there was alladin!and even if i was born like 30 years ago, id still like her.man, she's a legend.

  • soprano or not (yet), she has what it takes to be a really good one. this version is remarkably unique. she's giving new and fresh take on an operatic song and WE WANT MORE!!!

  • omg i rememba singing diz dang!!! i love lea from the beginning. i dont think i can still sing this. still love the song tho

  • Great!

  • So much operatic pontential.. she's got the technique.

  • If she were to be trained in opera singing, I would think her voice would not be as warm as what she has today. I"m classically trained, and quite frankly I am glad she is not classically trained. I prefer her voice just the way it is.

  • I couldnt agree with you more.

  • wow...miss lea salonga...simply the best...she could be anything!

  • she's actually a lyric soprano.

  • yes i agree. she's a lyric soprano in contrast to what was written in forums that she's a mezzosoprano. in some songs, she sounds like a light-lyric soprano, but in some songs like "I Dreamed A Dream", she sounds more powerful, so I guess she can be a full-lyric soprano.

  • Lea's been my fave singer since i was 6 years old and now i'm 18. she's so remrkable! the best singer on the planet!

  • and lea is incomparable to anybody with that exceptional talent go philippines is proud of her

  • i am proud of lea salonga! thats it no more questions needed to be asked

  • The question is could of Lea been a world class opera singer , had she had the training? I believe so, few people are ever born with the raw talent and musical instincts his lady has. If she has any desire to go the classical route, I don't think it is too late. After a full course of study at a major music school such as Juilliard, followed by an apprenticeship with a opera company, who what kind of vocal wonders Lea would be doing.

  • Lea is no soprano, that's the bottomline.

She had no formal vocal training at all,

so it is not fair to compare her to Sumi

Jo or Lucia Popp or Renee Fleming or June Anderson, etc., because these last 4 women had decades of vocal training under their belt. There's just no contest at all. Lea is better for Broadway shows, not opera, definitely. BTW I am a Filipino like Lea, and I am proud of her, but to claim that she is a soprano would be a big lie.

  • shut up!

  • so whaaat if she is not soprano!!!! the bottom line is she CAN sing that kind of songs.

  • I agree with you that it's rather unfair to compare Lea to Lucia Popp or other opera trained singers, but I must point out that she did go through formal vocal training - it's part of being in any theatre company, after all.

And yes, Lea is not a soprano. She's a mezzo with a rather impressive range. :)

  • Well, Fyi Lea was trained by Mr. C or Ryan Cayabyab before she did the Miss Saigon in London and after years doing Miss Saigon Lea's voice was deteriorated for about a year because of the stress of Broadway songs she need to have a break for about a year coz she could not sing the way she is and that time when she was refer to a vocal coach in West end and the other one in New york to help her Restoring her beautiful voice and keep singing. The bottom line is she had a vocal training sorry =P

  • This is an excellent performance. Does Lea's high notes float as effortlessly as the BEST classically trained sopranos can sing them? Not exactly, but her upper range is better then most professional singers. Had Lea been classically trained over the years, I think she would be now one of the opera greats. Her voice is that good.

  • such an angelic voice! i love lea a lot... you could feel that her songs were sung from the heart!

  • I love Lea, but this is not good at all. Sumi Jo's Pie Jesu or Lucia Popp's are two of my favorite versions.

  • wow! never knew Lea sings classically.

  • great, superb, astonishing, all the superlatives, an angelic voice indeed. proud to say im filipino each time i hear lea singing this song. bravo, hands down, one of the most amazing voices ive ever heard, pwede siyang makipag duet kay pavarotti, botocellli, and charlotte church...bravo!

  • she's good but I think she has a little trouble with the higher notes; she sounds a little weak. also, her pronunciation is off. and to whomever said all classical sopranos sing shrilly, well...you're wrong. no offense. but if you go to a good opera, no one should sound shrill even on the high notes. if you listen to a clip of Diana Damrau or Robin Schlotz on Youtube singing the Queen of the Night aria from the Magic Flute, they don't sound shrill at all.

  • take note she rarely sings at this style..

  • I like it it's pretty

But why is it......shaky? Extremely shaky?

  • That's her vibrato. It is a natural thing for some voices, and it is saught after in classical music and musical theater.

Anyway, Lea Salonga is simply amazing. I didn't know she had such a range!

  • that's vibrato

  • my god she's got such a large range! her voice is amazing!

  • My old choir teacher's Advanced womens choir sang this!

  • This is one of the most soothing pieces in the world in my opinion.

  • 100 percent Filipino talent!

  • dang her range is crazy large. from the rich low tones to those amazing high notes. tuned to perfection. man shes great

  • You forgot to put all the Awards she had recieived like the OLIVIER AWARD in London, Best Actress Award Tony etc..............

  • Thank you for posting this song - superb - touches my heart and describes my faith

  • I love her rendition of Pie Jesu!

  • The composition achieved a Grammy Award in 1986 in the category of best classical composition, according to Andrew LLoyd Webber's official site. Lea is doing classical soprano here. Shrilly? I don't think so, all classical sopranos sing this way.

  • love her voice... so angelic

  • I like this version of Pie Jesu...

  • Wow I like this and Lea Salongga, her voice is truly hers, very unique. Well I am really going to sleep now after hearing this ;p

  • Uh, opera this most certainly not. It's sacred music. And though I love Lea's voice to bits, I do agree with the one poster who said her voice is too shrill for this sort of piece. Still pretty in its way, though.

  • This is sacred, not Opera.

  • pls vote for Lea Salonga at voote website (u know what letters come before and after the "voote" word, can't post it here) as Hottest Female of Asian Origin

  • Love Lea to pieces, but her voice is too shrill to adequetly pull off this song- the rounded vowels just arent there and she needs to raise her soft pallet to get rid of the shrillness. I much prefer Sarah Brightman's version. And just FYI, this piece is called Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem- it is not opera.

  • This is not from an opera... it's a requiem from traditional Christian mass.

  • Andrew wrote a Requiem Mass that premiered in NYC on 2/25/85 at St Thomas Church, inspired by an article he had read in the New York Times, about a Cambodian boy who had the option of killing his mutilated sister or being killed himself. The Requiem Mass was dedicated to his father,William Lloyd Webber, who died in '82.

  • songpidgeon,Perhaps surprisingly given the classical nature of the work, THE PIE JESU FROM REQUIEM CLIMBED TO THE TOP OF THE POPULAR MUSIC CHARTS IN GREAT BRITAIN. This song was not handed down from ancient traditional mass but is an Andrew Lloyd Webber composition that he dedicated to his deceased father.

  • Really? Thankyou for sharing:)

    Beautiful piece, eh?

    Have a nice day!

    kisses

    Sarah

  • Very Excellent, Shes the One!!!!!

  • Beautiful Voice and Song if i listen this Song i feel always that i am on clouds and fly away... Thank You very much...

  • ahhhhhhhhh shes amazingggggggggggggggggggggggggg

  • Heh.. I sang this song in choir.

  • Lea is superb!

  • whoa...shocked i am...

  • Lea is freaking AWESOME. Thanks for sharing this!

  • This piece is from Andrew Lloyd Webers Requiem!

  • It's not opera. It's part of a Christian mass in Latin.

  • ganda. i heard a version of this song by the phil madrigal singers, it was awesome.

  • where can i download this song?
