It just simply isn't practical. We should take steps toward this but I doubt the issue will be resolved anytime in the near future. Yeah, everyone will be on board for a while, that is until they find out that the price of all of their gadgets and electronics' prices will increase exponentially. We should try to fix their corrupt government first and kill all those fucking rebels, then maybe we can help those poor people.

I have a friend who works in Congo as a supermarket director who has a monthly salary of 1300 euros, while other employees only have 30 euros or so. 1300 euros is about the same salary he would get in Romania, but he lives much better in Congo because prices are very low. It`s somewhat funny that he gets a salary 50 times bigger than other employees just because he`s white.

After 1808 the slave trade was officially illegal, even though there was still a black market that went on for some years afterward. However, the only colonizing the USA did in Africa was sending back some Blacks to Liberia.
The USA did meddle in African politics during the Cold War, but that is not the exact same as colonization
Well today the USA has the 2nd largest number of people of African heritage outside of Africa.
The majority came during colonial times and continued legally until 1808.
However, it is interesting to note that the less than 10% of African slaves came to what is now the US
The main reason why the the US has long had a large African population is because the slaves here were on average better cared for than in the Caribbean & other parts of Latin America.

I too don't accept that consumers are to blame for this - but we can at least learn about it, and bring pressure to bear. This all underlines the importance of fair trade, good governance, and the repairing of failed states. Sadly no one from the great powers is doing very much in Africa, and that really ought to change - the importance of these minerals ought to be a factor favouring intervention.
Of course the 'great powers' are active in Africa, through aid (sticks and carrots), international institutions like the IMF, there is a military presence maintained by the US through its Africom program which arms and trains the armies of its African allies' and so on. Africa's vast natural resources are overwhelmingly owned privately either by these country's political elites or their multinational corporate sponsors.
The truth is that as an outsider, especially a white outsider who probably has more resources than the average African, he can enjoy privileges that our out of the reach of most people there. Believe it or not, there are people who live a very comfortable and modern life in all African countries. If you have enough money you can enjoy a life anywhere.
Btw, there are quite a few Chinese who are living and working in Africa now. They are doing quite well

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. I dont think they are blaming anyone for buying iPhones etc, rather they want to highlight the fact that the companies producing the things that use this mineral do so little to improve the situation, rather they exploit the fact that the situation in congo and africa in general makes the price of the mineral go down. It´s not our fault that there is war in congo, at least not us as in the people of today, but there should be more done to help.
I don't think even the companies are at fault. People need their electronics and the people who mine those minerals need their money! The only one to blame here is the nasty, corrupt goverment. The people of the west and companies of the west can't fix a corrupt system that has nothing to do with them other than supplying them with commodities!
The head of the companies can make the moral decision as to whether or not buy raw materials from places where people are brutally or unfairly exploited to obtain those materials. So once a company finds out what is going on and continues to look the other way, they also do share fault and their demand for the materials perpetuates the continued injustices in those countries. Governments are to blame for sure. However, those who demand the resources in spite of the cost are also to blame.
As they said right in this very documentary you are commenting on - it doesn't stop them selling these reseources elsewhere, and boycott only makes things harder, not impossible.
We also would take the money and jobs of the few poor people who actually benefit from this.
Two things the companies can do: get the coltan, gold, diamonds or whatever from elsewhere.
Consumers can choose to boycott. Most electronic items are luxuries...let's face it. Or consumers can just demand that the companies ensure they get the raw materials from elsewhere.
And in this particular case, consumers can do something as simple as recycle phones and electronic items.
Now, how about the many, many more people who suffer from this? do you have any concern for them?
As I just said - if they get it elsewhere, they will sell them elsewhere. I study enviroment and recycling, so I know how well we can recycle these and how it works - it is not that simple.
If we just stop bying electronics, they will not stop fighting, still. This brings even few people some wealth and it is THEIR government's problem to fix it. They cannot rely on us forever, and demonising playstation and I-pod owners is not the way to go.

I have a friend who works in Congo as a supermarket director who has a monthly salary of 1300 euros, while other employees only have 30 euros or so. 1300 euros is about the same salary he would get in Romania, but he lives much better in Congo because prices are very low. It`s somewhat funny that he gets a salary 50 times bigger than other employees just because he`s white.

Just to keep it factual, the USA never colonized Africa. Most of the slaves who came to the US legally were sent over only in the first 22 years of the USA's existence. After 1808 the slave trade was officially illegal, even though there was still a black market that went on for some years afterward. However, the only colonizing the USA did in Africa was sending back some Blacks to Liberia.
The USA did meddle in African politics during the Cold War, but that is not the exact same as colonization

Well today the USA has the 2nd largest number of people of African heritage outside of Africa.
The majority came during colonial times and continued legally until 1808.
However, it is interesting to note that the less than 10% of African slaves came to what is now the US
The main reason why the the US has long had a large African population is because the slaves here were on average better cared for than in the Caribbean & other parts of Latin America.

What should have happened before colonialism ended in the1950s - 1970s was a longer period of preparation for independence so that Africans could gain experience running their own governments and building up stable democratic institutions.

I too don't accept that consumers are to blame for this - but we can at least learn about it, and bring pressure to bear. This all underlines the importance of fair trade, good governance, and the repairing of failed states. Sadly no one from the great powers is doing very much in Africa, and that really ought to change - the importance of these minerals ought to be a factor favouring intervention.

Of course the 'great powers' are active in Africa, through aid (sticks and carrots), international institutions like the IMF, there is a military presence maintained by the US through its Africom program which arms and trains the armies of its African allies' and so on. Africa's vast natural resources are overwhelmingly owned privately either by these country's political elites or their multinational corporate sponsors.

So what's wrong with living in Africa.
The truth is that as an outsider, especially a white outsider who probably has more resources than the average African, he can enjoy privileges that our out of the reach of most people there. Believe it or not, there are people who live a very comfortable and modern life in all African countries. If you have enough money you can enjoy a life anywhere.
Btw, there are quite a few Chinese who are living and working in Africa now. They are doing quite well

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. I dont think they are blaming anyone for buying iPhones etc, rather they want to highlight the fact that the companies producing the things that use this mineral do so little to improve the situation, rather they exploit the fact that the situation in congo and africa in general makes the price of the mineral go down. It´s not our fault that there is war in congo, at least not us as in the people of today, but there should be more done to help.

I don't think even the companies are at fault. People need their electronics and the people who mine those minerals need their money! The only one to blame here is the nasty, corrupt goverment. The people of the west and companies of the west can't fix a corrupt system that has nothing to do with them other than supplying them with commodities!

The head of the companies can make the moral decision as to whether or not buy raw materials from places where people are brutally or unfairly exploited to obtain those materials. So once a company finds out what is going on and continues to look the other way, they also do share fault and their demand for the materials perpetuates the continued injustices in those countries. Governments are to blame for sure. However, those who demand the resources in spite of the cost are also to blame.

As they said right in this very documentary you are commenting on - it doesn't stop them selling these reseources elsewhere, and boycott only makes things harder, not impossible.
We also would take the money and jobs of the few poor people who actually benefit from this.

Two things the companies can do: get the coltan, gold, diamonds or whatever from elsewhere.
Consumers can choose to boycott. Most electronic items are luxuries...let's face it. Or consumers can just demand that the companies ensure they get the raw materials from elsewhere.
And in this particular case, consumers can do something as simple as recycle phones and electronic items.
Now, how about the many, many more people who suffer from this? do you have any concern for them?

As I just said - if they get it elsewhere, they will sell them elsewhere. I study enviroment and recycling, so I know how well we can recycle these and how it works - it is not that simple.
If we just stop bying electronics, they will not stop fighting, still. This brings even few people some wealth and it is THEIR government's problem to fix it. They cannot rely on us forever, and demonising playstation and I-pod owners is not the way to go.

Actually 'Socialism' extended the lifespan of the average person by 20 years across all of the countries that came under its influence. In some countries (China and the USSR) the lifespan was doubled. The Soviet Union developed from third world to one of two superpowers in a single generation.

African countries aren't like Greece,the Congo is multi-ethnic and decades of division have made them bitter towards one another,that people only look out for their own groups while mistreating others. its hard fighting a government when the west constantly harm them with more weapons. people are tired of fighting so they bow to the authorities and take whatever they can get. every time we fight we lose you get it,it is noway similar to you, you haven't had other parties join your conflict

yeah, much of africa is like perpetually balkanized... it's sad, those kids and seeing that iphone. and yeah a backwards people is kinda right, that kinda brings about their downfall. rich ass land, but too many ethnic divisions and conflicts sit on top of it. if it was all one organized homogenous culture there things could/could've become pretty awesome for them. i guess india is the only success story i can think of for being heavily ethnically diverse.

not completely don't forget that Burma,Pakistan,and Bangladesh all separated from India violently.and ethnic and religious division still persist in Kashmir and uttar pradesh. India is mostly ran by the majority Hindi just like china by the Han. Africa is by far the most ethnically diverse continent on the planet and no one race makes up a vast majority.
