The newspapers made it out to be. Just like Titanic. Nothing like it by hundreds of miles. The cruise liner is lucky its near to land and in shallow waters otherwise if it was further it, it would be a disaster.

Glad the fishing boats and sea rescue got to the liner to help the passengers.

Our waitress at the hotel said the people of Santorini are very mad that it hasn't been cleaned up. Yes, it's still there. She said some people say it hit something. Others say the cruise line was in financial trouble and is was done on purpose.

They couldn't beach it as there was nowhere to beach it onto, look at the view right at the beginning all you can see are steep cliffs! read it up on wikipedia and you'll see that the charts they were using were wrongly marked, also most of the oil on board has now been removed, 2 French people were killed when it struck the reef there bodies were never found.

@fischer0dude Yes, I agree, if all that was the case. However, these ships should have redundent systems. With such thin plating, how can they ignore this very scenario...a grounding incident. I would think an above waterline backup generator would have kept the pumps on station until the ship could have been beached or grounded in shallow water. Amazing. I am starting to think that these cruise lines are run by monkeys, and the ships designed by retards.

@makarios21 In the video I see lots of areas to beach a ship where it can be salvaged. I work in a Ship Yard in Thunderbay ON CA but my brother in law works for salvagers off the West Coast. He says even just the electronics, chairs, ovens, ect can be worth a pretty penny. Also, at least if it was beached, they could pump the Diesel from her tanks, and other such petrochemical products, so she could be dragged out of the way to be a reef or something.

Unexpected tough was the two dead passengers. A french father and his teenage daughter.

It ran aground on a well known volcanic reef east of Nea Kameni so the man in charge was an idiot. the owners were fined 1.17 nillion euros.(wikipedia with serveral sorces)

I sailed on a Greek ship the SS Australis from Australia when I was 14 in the 70,s the Greek crew were great fun, a time Ive never forgot.

This is a sad end to a ship, wouldnt like to live on the edge of that cliff where the video was filmed from looks abit high to me.

@URframed2 Its worse than you think. That 300 metre cliff is the edge of a huge volcanic crater. The low lying island you can see beyond the ship is a new volcano which rose in 1707 out of the flooded crater left behind about 3,500 years ago when the entire island exploded. Still active, last eruption 1950, Also serious earthquake in 1956. Good place for holidays, though.
