I like this a lot! Everyone has to start somewhere, even the greats like Scorsese. Original films they did and raw footage such as this is such a motivation for me! Very happy I got to finally see this. Thanks!
My point: Politics should be left to news shows and the papers. Movies don't necessarily have to be pure puerile entertainment, but leave politics out of cinema. Isn't that why people watch movies anyway, to get AWAY from the world? Let me hear about politics on the news. While I don't doubt Scorsese's genius in this dramatic and "high art" portrayal of Vietnam, his talents would be better used on other themes. All the hype about this just gets on my nerves.
Why Scorsese? Underneath all the artsy symbolism its just a political ad. I can do that: In symbolizing the War on Terror, for example, some guy could go to a faraway store, buy an extra-strength product for a problem he doesn't actually have, and get hurt in the process- (We send massive numbers of soldiers to a foreign country, looking for weapons of mass destruction that don't actually exist). There you have it, a biased propaganda ad veiled by aloof symbolism.
I realise this film was a comment by Scorsese on the war of Vietnam - you have an entire world and you are wasting it - but is this at all meant to be black comedy? I've heard people say this, but how is it? Is it the fact he goes beyond the shaving cream into the skin?
watching this the first time i was confused cas i had no idea wut it was about but after reading da posts catching the meaning and rewatching it this is so beautifuly made Scorsese is a geniuse
Scorcese sucks dick! This is absolute proof that he is nothing more than a low-life! THIS is what a sicko imagines and then puts it out there for all to see. He is revealing his own sick, perverted soul. Thanks for shining more light on this cockroach.
If that is all you are seeing then it is you who are depraved, you sick fuck. Scorsese is an artist and a gentleman which is more than can be said for such sad little puritantical warped excuses for humans such as you. You don't even deserve an opinion. Very sad.
it's good; i like it - even if it wasn't scorsese and just a random film.
i like stuff like this, taking an everyday action and subverting it into something else. even if you look at it simply on face value it still has something to it. that's why it's clever - it has layers.
my point was that that's not the reason i think it's good - people have suggested in comments that this is only acclaimed because of who made it. but that's not the case.

Wow, I dunno what to say. My teacher told my film studies class to watch it and he wanted to know what we thought, all I'll say ia "wow" and not in the "I'm so fascinated" way.
this is obviously a metaphor for the vietnam war. we thought we were going in and cleaning up. we ended up really hurt but we didn't do a thing about it. we just kept going, completely aloof to what was going on.
Right! Search for a Noxzema-Clip of 1961, look, and LAUGH!!!!!
The 2nd meaning might also do well, but the first time I saw it I enjoyed it very much just the way it was: nasty black humour of the highest quality!!
and obviously, if you read the comments, im obviously not the only one who thinks that, because obviously the original name was Viet' 67. So obviously i used context clues to obviously say what i obviously though about it
i obviously didnt read that because i was wrong. so obviously you should shut up and not accuse me of "obviously" taking claim for credit. Youre obviously sitting in your mothers basement playing dungeons and dragons while you try to "obviously" accuse people for stealing when Obviously that was just my perception.
Start: Well, this is . . . a pretty banal subject for a short film. I wonder what Martin will do with it.
About 2 minutes in: Interesting cinematography there, but I don't really feel like it's building to anything . . .
About 3 minutes in: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH OH GOD OH GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THIS OH GOD THE BLOOD OH GOD!!!!!!!!!
After watching: Well, that was . . . interesting. BUT NEVER AGAIN.

Is it true that this was considered a surreal protest against the war in Vietnam?
ArthurBitter 2 years ago
@ArthurBitter
Well, the alternative title to this is Viet '67. Thus, many people interpret this as a representation of the US's self mutilation in the Vietnam War.

just like what america did in the vietnam war.
