  • Tebaldi may have sung this aria with precision ... Caballe surely sang it beautifully. But, Callas sang it the most authentically. This aria is Maria Callas's unwritten memoir. Rest in peace, you delectable tigress.

  • Maria was before my time, being born in 52.At age 17 I heard the '53 recording and hated every Tosca after that.I love the honesty in her voice passion and colouring that she brings to music!!So many others learned from her.I just wish people would stop comparing every one to her,Maria was unique. All others have their way good or indifferent, music is to be enjoyed,I live the opera 'cause I love the art!!!

  • What's wrong with some people here? Is this the first time you ever heard her?? This is the end of the career, idiots. And even with her voice in shreds she sings rings around all these lackluster Ukranian dogs who arenas differentiated as one piece of toilet paper from the other. Try to LISTEN with your ears and your souls. Unfortunately you don't know the difference between an artist and a Mongolian idiot.

  • Maria Callas was an atractive woman with a dramatic attitude but her techniquewas auful. Her high notes sounds like an ambulance; a very dramatic ambulance.

  • @doggonel0ver An ambulance that came to rescue us and our senses, indeed. ;)

  • Oh god, that was absolutely horrible. She deserves to revive and be killed again for that aria.

  • @doggonel0ver listen again until it touches your heart ....do you know what the aria is about ?

  • @doggonel0ver Can't blame Callas for singing about Callas's life any way she wants to.

  • I wonder if the really serious Callas fans condone the hysterical, vitriolic, tirades launched by some of ther fellow fans, that are directed at anyone who does not agree with their opinions. There's something sick going on here that has little to do with music. These crude attacks with their sexual themes, suggest a mind with feelings of inadequacy and preoccupied with motivations of necromania. I can't help but wonder if they masterbate while listening to their dead lover.

  • @MrPlattsmouth Her high notes can be orgasmic ... to the ears. Nothing wrong with that.

  • One heart... One Voice... All full of energy!

  • MY ONLY and UNIQUE ...

  • Every note, every gesture, every movement of her eyes have a spontaneous inevitability, and we are mesmerized by the sheer power and genius of one of the greatest vocal artists who ever lived. How lucky we are to live in a time where this clip is the undisputed proof of her brilliance. We need say nothing. .. Just watch and listen.

  • @Josquinquin I totally agree with you

  • @neneorganico: welly well well... I think, its gonna be a "nice" feeling, if someone becomes 60, 70, 80 years and has to say to himself: "I had no life." What will someone do with his days, his counter to the death? Shall we all become simple-working-eating-sleeping-tv_watching "human ressources", "biological material", "numbers"? No. But many will end their lifes as they never lived. Maria Callas did it not. She worked hard to become more than the most of us. She will never be forgotten.

  • NENEORGANICO....LEARN SOMETHING USEFUL AND TRY NOT TO BE THE BRAINLESS MORON WITH BAD TASTE IN MUSIC THAT EVERY POST YOU DO, SHOWS......IS THRE EUTANASIA IN ARGENTINA?? TRY IT PLEASE AND SO, YOU WOULD MAKE A FAVOUR TO THE ENTIRE WORLD...A WORM LESS TO ENDURE, AND YES, MARIA CALLAS HAD A BRIEF CAREER AND A TRAGIC DEATH...BUT EVEN SO, SHE IS THE BEST OF ALL SINGING-ACTRESSES THE WORLD EVER HAD......IN SPITE YOUR STUPIDS AND IGNORANT POSTINGS....GO AND TAKE A MATE WITH CIANURO CHEAP QUEER !!!

  • Poor Maria pouring out her soul for our benefit. We don't deserve it!

  • Surely the best clip of Callas ever made. She 's the best, acting Tosca and being the prima donna all at the same time! Watch her rise stretch out her beautiful arms an walk out towards the audience at the climax. I lover her!

  • I saw this very performance. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

  • immaginate questo in un Teatro in Italia...alla fine dell'aria ci sarebbe stato un boato e il Teatro sarebbe venuto giù!

    Grandissima Callas!

  • Opera is not just about the voice. It's the ultimate package in expression of this art.

I know Maria Callas' 1964 performance of Vissi Darte will never be rivaled. Her performance stirs our hearts. Her voice?

You don't hear A voice when you watch this... You live it.

  • @ajjin003 Well said. If you make a cold analysis of this performance, you have to ask yourself, "Did she just make that sound? What is that?" HOWEVER, if you turn off the analysis and allow yourself to simply experience the emotion, this becomes an incomparably amazing performance.

  • @ajjin003 You can see the future ???

  • i can agree with you ;)

  • Better than 1958 ;)

  • @djchehov : No. Here her voice is very little, her full opera schedule ended in 1958. This was her '64 comeback attemp but it only lasted one year (the '64/'65 season) and it was very sad, the voice was totally gone. Aside that she never dared to sing "Tosca" at LaScala, it was not a good opera for Maria. I feel sympathy towards Maria, she debuted a role and sang a few perf and dropped it, and she changed so many roles , it was terrible for the voice, she lasted so short...

  • Magnificent suffering!!

  • The greatest Tosca of all times. There is nothing like that today because miracles happen only once.

  • Something undeniable about Maria Callas is that one can forget who is singing what. When Callas sang Tosca, she WAS Tosca. When she sang Violeta, she WAS Violeta. When she sang Aida, she WAS Aida. Her artistry was supreme, her musically unsurpassed; her acting divine. Certainly one can purchase a recording of Monserrat Caballé and hear vocal perfection, but not the type of deep emotion one finds in any rendition by Maria Callas. She was and will continue to be the greatest DIVA of all times.

  • Insuperable.la tristeza reflejada es lo maximo que una cantante puede anhelar.

  • Very fine and not many could act like she did always. I heard her on stage once. Yes, Sills was another one who could act also but a very different voice type. This is really wonderful too see!

  • the best Tosca

  • This is the best by callas and no body can sing better. She has to be the best ever, probably equalled by caballe.

  • i love you Maria:)

  • I get goosebumps everytime I listen to her :)

I think she was and is the perfect opera singer!

  • I LOVE U MARIA

  • @brandonh72 I don't understand, if you don't like Callas or understand why some of us love her, why you would feel compelled to air your opinion of her in public. I'm not going to defend Callas to you, because you've made up your mind about her, although I doubt seriously if you have investigated all her recordings. There are many, many famous singers that I HATE. However, I simply don't comment on them.

There is such a thing as gallantry left in the world, and I suggest you investigate it.

  • @brandonh72 People like Maria Callas because she was an artist. No one had her emotion and expression. It is no secret that she had some vocal weakening after her weight loss. If you listen to her recording from Mexico in 1952 her high notes are amazing. But she was still an amazing artist and musician even after her voice lose some of it's power. Some others at the time had glorious voices but lacked any acting skill or the ability to show her range of expression. For instance, Joan Sutherland

  • @devon214 I agree with you that Sutherland and others had the glorious voice bit not the acting skill. This would not include Caballe, who in my opinion had both.

  • @devon214 YOU ARE SO RIGHT, SHE WILL BE FOR EVER THE BEST !!!!!

  • @devon214 Joan was a different kind of artist,I knew Joan and Ricky, fabulous people,Maria sang her way Joan sang hers, both were FANTASTIC IN THEIR OWN WAY!! Enjoy music don't waste your time criticizing you won't enjoy, whats the point??

  • The voice is an answer to the intelligence of the heart and it is that the sensitive one hears.....

  • Creo que de todas las versiones que he escuchado esta es la más hermosa. Maria Callas tenía una voz fascinante. No dejo de emocionarme al escucharla cantar "Vissi D'arte" que también considero como la más bella aria de esta ópera.

  • This is so poignantly beautiful and very well sung. One of the finest documents of Callas' art on film. It never fails to move me. Maria we miss you!

  • This is true beauty. It Makes my spine tingle and my throat swell.

    Breath taking.

  • You know, I've never understood why people like Maria Callas. She has the widest vibrato ever on the most poignant and triumphant part of the entire aria. You could drive a truck through that woman's wobble! And it's this way on most of her recordings. Anything above the staff sounds like she's 90 years old!

  • @brandonh72 Because she had amazing communication and expression.

  • @brandonh72 Are you fucking mad? Maria Callas is the most amazing singer that ever existed. So be quiet.. and don't listen to her sing this beautiful aria if you don't like her. Go away.

  • this is art

  • My apologies to Callas fans for the tone of my posting 3 days ago. I should have been more sensitive to your feelings in expressing my opinion. I cry when I see Caballe' perform Vissi D'arte so I can imagine how you might have felt at my insensitivity.

  • Not an opera buff, but this recording ALWAYS makes me cry. I have tested this against other recordings and they just don't pack the same emotional punch. A great and troubled lady, and a genius in her work..

  • Magnificent suffering...a cry from the human soul...

  • This aria belongs to Montserrat Caballe'. Her warm rich voice, and genuine emotion are head and shoulders above the shrill hard voice and melodramatic posturings Callas presents. Callas is far over rated in my opinion.

  • @MrPlattsmouth Oh piss off...you tone deaf moron!!

  • @TheMrMarilyn Wow, Callas has some callous fans!

  • @MrPlattsmouth Yes deeYah...and also ones that occasionally just can't be fukked to discuss WHY Maria is/was and will always be,THE supreme artist with regards to opera,of the century!!Ah mean...even Monsee gives Maria the absolutely deserved praise, above herself...and this Covent Gdn film of Tosca IS regarded,by most everyone who knows about opera,to be THE definitive portrayal of Tosca...end of!!And sometimes ah just can't be fukked to go into it all yet a-GAIN!!Ok!!?xxx

  • @MrPlattsmouth I THINK THAT EXPERTS HAVE ALREADY SAID THAT CALLAS WAS AND IN MY OPINION IS AND WILL BE, THE SUPREME TOSCA EVER....MONTSERRAT CABALLE IS A GREAT SINGER BUT NOT VERY CLEVER, SHE THINKS THAT BECAUSE SHE IS A SOPRANO, SHE CAN SING ALL THE ROLES NO MATTER WHAT, THAT IS WHY SHE WAS BOOED AT LA SCALA IN ANNA BOLENA ....!!!!!!

  • @simisimi9 What experts ?

  • @MrPlattsmouth WHAT ABOUT TULLIO SERAFIN AND HERBERT VON KARAJAN...I ASSUME YOU KNOW THEM...AND MANY MORE....IF YOU ARE DEAF, MORON AND HAVE BAD TASTE IN MUSIC IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM, BUT, INFORM YOURSELF BEFORE POSTING STUPIDITIES !!!

  • @simisimi9 If you are so sure about your arguments why you are searching people in youtube to repeat all weeks the same nonsense and concepts of a typical native ignorant chilean.Return to the stream, this is your place, opera is not for drunken indians.

Maria Callas was a loser, she was dead at 53, she could not enjoy of life, even her own sister Jackie told that and her passing through this life was so miserable that even has a grave, it was reduced to ashes. Poor Marìa.

  • @neneorganico hello dirty worm, ha,ha...i see you follow my postings....it must be part of your miserable life....certainly Maria Callas had a short career and her final days werw tragic, BUT, though you like it or not little slug, she reigned supreme among all others sopranos, even today is a reference for all of them...so get back to your hole, take yor tri-terapy and try to improve your taste in music, moron...and indians' ha,ja...argentinians come from indians too...asshole!

  • Splendida come sempre

  • wow

    impresionante.

  • probably her best video of her greatest opera

  • And this exemplifies the reason she is the greatest opera singer of the 20th century.

  • unsurpassable musical beauty!

  • I cry every time....

  • @kaktusovcvet me too!

  • @kaktusovcvet Same here, I swear! How mere mortal complains to the Eternal, in cosmos-piercing agonizing notes. Maria was singing her story here. No doubt.

  • The most moving, musical Vissi d'arte of all, including Callas' own multiple versions.

  • PERFECTA¡¡¡¡ no hay lugar a comentarios

  • amazing
