That was a pretty cool way to end the show. Oddly enough I'm starting to like the Aussie Top gear a lot more than I used to...possibly because they actually review and drive cars as opposed to getting an audience through gimmicks and vacations.
i like BMW motorcycle. nice bike. they look unique compare to japanese bikes, the performance i'm not sure. i hope BMW will enter MotoGP racing in the future
That very short clip that ends at 1:11 where they're both coming over the ridge and the X5 loses directional control and suddenly points towards the motorcycle... I wish they hadn't cut the scene short. I'd love to see what happened in the following five seconds!
F650 Dakar is a sick bike, I sold mine about a year ago, I miss it :-( Great offroad, its no honda or traditional dirtbike, but when it comes down to it, rider is 80% of the battle, If your a crappy rider, your machine doesnt matter.
granted, but there's more to it than a happy medium. A crappy rider on a great bike will still suck ass, while a great rider on a crappy bike will still be impressive as hell (I'm talking Kawasaki KLR650 crappy, not won't even start crappy)
Yeah, a great rider is always impressive whatever the bike. He just won't be able to achieve a good result :) Competitions don't care for how a rider did well "regarding" :) But you're right. A great rider is more valuable than a great bike. Unless the bike is completely out of it's element of something. :)
yeah, i was supprised how well it did! Only mothers and footballers drive them, where i'm from but what a performance from the support version! I've just ordered the new F650gs, obviously not as hardcore an offroader but is said to be quite good in the rough stuff and it was great on the roads in the test ride

That X5 broke down so much during Race to Dakar that I felt sorry for BMW.... great bike though.

Top Gear UK is a better show but I like this too.

I'd like to see an off the shelf offroad orientated X5 against the off the shelf F650GS Dakar.

it highly depends on the type of circuit. On some circuits a 4x4 is faster, and on others a bike will disappear in the lead.

Truth be told, the X5 did well. If u disagree, take another SUV and try doing that with it..yeah, exactly...Not bad BMW...A JOB WELL DONE!

actually ... a standard X5 will get stuck in a puddle.
Its the best SUV for the road period.
But when it comes to off roading .. the Touareg , Cayenne , LR Discovery would eat it up.
The X5 is more of a tall Gt than an off roader. It needs better entry angles and an airmatic supension to get higher.

neither of the vehicles is remotely similar to a production vehicle. The X5 is not even close to being an off road vehicle.
