To add to that response... I had the power feeds to each track split at the control panel as seen ahead of the Pizza Hut. There were 4 SPDT switches, and 4 100 Ohm potentiometers, one for each lane. I could run 4 slot cars on cruise control via the pots, or switch each lane to run by controllers. This allowed the kids to race ( usually last man standing) or after they went to sleep run the whole thing myself with the slots as moving scenery. I had a bunch of HO slots lit up for night running.
How you stopping car? Way back in day 20 some years ago when I ran movable flat track setups, when you could get rr/slot crossing anywhere, I would run wire from one side crossing to other then have section slot track on crossing with its own power and use pressure switch to break circuit to slot crossing, you using similar or you found better way?
@JasonPutt I had a circutron crossing gate set up to animate the gates. The set up drove 2 tortoise switch machines. One handled the gates, once I got them hooked up, and the other moved a magnet back and forth. The slot track at the crossing plus one section on either side of it were isolated from the rest of the track. Those 3 sections of isolated track were wired to the transformers directly, and the circuit was controlled by 4 reed switches.
All I have to say is this is one hell of a layout. Its the best of both worlds. For the auto and railfan this is one jam packed action layout. Great Job! I give 10 thumbs up but I only have two, lol.
Ok. I don't get on here often, but I will try try answer as many Q's as I can. The crossing gates did finally get addressed, and about 2 months later the whole table got torn down. The engines pulling the freight cars are Bachmann, the ones pulling the passenger cars are MRC. The crossing was made from 2 9" lock and joiner straights. I milled the grooves by hand and laid in the tracks. I do plan on another table, but my space is severely limited. I'm also switching to Tomy track next time.
I like the 4 lane Xing and the automated signals, personally I prefer racing to the crossing, that's where u get your best action!! New railroad slot car videos coming soon
AT Brainslks/HO House (|;)-. You're gonna love it.
@Trolleymoose Yes and no. You're seeing a slot car stopping itself for a train. When it was all running right, there were 4 cars (4 lanes) stopping themselves when the train was coming. You also missed the fact that the van has head and tail lights... LOL
Not yet Mike. I need to repair one of the lanes (not stopping for the train) and then I can do one final video. The table is getting dismantled soon in preparation for a move this spring. I have already started obtaining goodies for the next table, and it'll be a killer. (mostly on my wallet) :)
No good news on the repairs. Still haven't got under the table to check the reed switches. And yes flyer, I have untold hours into the set up, and it does look way better now. The landscaping is nearly done, along with a ton more lighting. You have to be a little crazy to go to this extreme. You're totally nuts if you build it in a rented house, knowing sooner or later, it all has to get torn apart.. :) Next track I'm attempting will be routed. LOL on the strings JRM. We do what we have to do!
I would love to do this! I have an HO Railroad setup, and an Aurora Track layout upstairs. My train is on an elevated railway. I will for sure have to try this setup.
Never lit the lights but used to make the gates go up and down with fish line. Used to make a display for a few years in the 70's for the NMRHS. We had t-jets and HO trains. We were a hit for a short while. It was a 3 man show with 6 members. The train operator was responsible for the crossing gates. You had 2 strings to pull, 1 for up, 1 for down. I just dug my cars our for the 1st time in years.
Just an update.. I have got a bunch of work done on the table!! The crossing gates do operate now. Not as well as I would like, but they do go up and down. Since getting them done though I developed a problem with one of the lanes not shutting down when the train is coming, and I haven't diagnosed the problem yet. I also want to invest in a tripod so the video quality hopefully will be a little better. Check back as the new video is bound to show up soon!! Landscaping didn't come out half bad!
The crossing is made from 2 TJet 9" straights, 4 9" Atlas HO scale straights, a dremel with a cutting blade, JB Weld and a bunch of trial and error. The depth of the cuts in the slot car track have to leave the train tracks perfectly level or the slot cars will bounce too much. The cuts in the slot car track have to be done so you don't end up short circuiting the train rails and the slot car rails.
Jumper wires need to be soldered to the train rails prior to assembly because you need to cut all the way through for the slot car's pins. I would make these, but they are really time consuming, use a lot of track, and I would have to charge so much for one it would never sell. Thanks!
I know micro!! I know!! I have everything for that to happen except the cables from the switch machine to the gates. For some reason, they always get pushed to the back burner and never get purchased.. Very soon they will be up abd running, along with the remaining scenery getting done.
There is a mile of wires under the table. Between the automation of the crossing, the sensors for the gates and the controllers, not to mention all the lighting, it's a mess underneath. But the best function of all, I can run 4 cars at once from the corner station and the crossing does it's own thing. This way, I can kick back with a cold one and just watch!!
Hi Joe, keep up the great work, I enjoyed your video, it's great to see a grade crossing with all parts moving, I think that model railroaders have come accustomed to having road vehicles stand still in the scenes. I like your van doing almost "warp" speed around it's track.
Sorry it took so long to respond!! It's been a while since I checked! Believe it or not, it looks much faster in the video than it's going. I noticed this effect with the first video I shot of the table.I can run them a bit slower, but there's a couple "dead spots" on the track and slowing the vehicles down causes occasional stalls.. not too pretty when filming!! Thanks! Joe
I'd love to try outrunning the train. Have you had your slotcar hit by the train?

I was just wondering about the x-ing signals; they flash, but the crossbucks don't come down. Will those be functional after the move?
