The tag is in the back of the Barberpole Cat book, a book of 12 simple songs and two tags that all Barbershoppers are expected to learn, just for occasions such as this.
It's one of the great pleasures at any convention or other Barbershop gathering to sing songs with three other guys that you don't know, and the Polecats make it feasible.
Just because Barberpole Cats are easy, though, doesn't mean that there aren't differences in skill. GOTCHA! won the 2004 International Convention by singing Barberpole Cats, arranged just as they are in the book. They sang the SNOT out of them, though. So they won, even over other Quartets singing more difficult, fancier songs and arrangements.
(That was the year that Vocal Spectrum won the Collegiate Championship on their first try.)
