When his former colleagues discovered his past, they collected the funds to put the headstone there that you can see today. I think South Wales Borderers bought his VC and it is on display at their museum in Brecon.
@MrCagivaman Ah, that would be his REPLACEMENT VC. The original, awarded by the Queen herself, was stolen and has never been seen again. Didn't know about his dying penniless. Will have to visit Brecon someday. I saw the Chard and Williams VCs at the Imperial War Museum last time I was in London.
Badly wounded in the shoulder. I don't think Hitch ever fully recovered the use of that arm.
