It's probably better if Damon thinks nobody loves him because if he believes that someone does, then he becomes very unstable as he tries to push them away. Like Jeremy felt when he tried to turn, Damon doesn't want to care because when he really starts to care again, something comes along to kick him hard. First with Katherine's "death", then the truth about her, and then with Rose.
