My son is a metal guy. . hard core stuff and he is currently very excited about "Animals As Leaders". they use the fractal and now he wants one! Sounds a little artifial to me. What's your take on it? . . . thx again!
this was my first week with version 8 when i recorded this, and it was plugged into a mackie studio monitor which i then mic'ed so very unconventional and not a tube or gtr speaker in sight.
@joelg125 If I remember correctly, Tosin Abasi from Animals as Leaders recorded the album with line 6 stuff. He didn't have an Axe Fx back then. Some of the A/B axe fx vs real amps demos really sells tho...
Your son has good taste... He should check out Amogh Symphony and Aghora if he hasn't yet.
@joelg125 What a kind dad ;), My friend has AxeFx Ultra and it's really difficult to tweak a tone out of AxeFx like Tosin Abasi(AAL) has. But this machine is really useful. U can plug it into computer and achieve studio quality at home, or you can plug it directly to a mixer, so you don't need all those boxes, power amps and boxes .. all you need is AxeFx ;)
I love the sound your getting on this thing. Did you record this direct from the unit into a computer or did you go through an amp and speaker cab? I hear these do not sound great through traditional speaker cabinets that are mic'd.
i did this clip the first week of owning it, plugged mono output from axe into a mackie studio monitor, and miced the tweeter and the mid/low driver seperately, and blended the high and low as it sounded in the room.
The cleans sound nice for sure .. but the distortion is not really not convincing "sounds modeled" .. Every time I decide to buy this thing a Youtube demo turns me off to it. Here the player is great and the unit sounds cool but the tube tone in distortion mode is not really there.... hopefully their next generation will be better.. this one sounds great but my dinosaur ears dont lie.
I keep wanting to like this thing but if you guys get this sound then I dunno. I really wish you would show off some stuff through a Palmer Amp Simulator because everything I have heard from that blows this away and you could spend less and have one or two real amp heads or preamps that do most of the tones you want.
Have you posted any of your patches over to Axe exchange? You seem to have really dialed in a lot of sounds I would be interested in using in the future. If so, what user name are you using over on the Fractal site? Thanks for responding!
How's the feel of it? On that plexi/vox tone you have the grindy poweramp crunch you'd expect when you hit hard is sort of there in the sound, but do you get the feel of it too? Thanks
i think you can pretty well dial in any facet of tone you want to control with this thing, but i still don't have the feel thing totally nailed down.
when i roll off gtr volume the tone stays pretty bright--in fact may even get brighter-- but it gets skinnier and tighter than amps like plexis and voxes and matchless amps i've played feel like. almost a direct acoustic tone.
you know, in theory i should be able to get the same sound mike landau gets on the raging honkies tune "roodis", or what eric johnson gets on the live "trail of tears" from austin city limits, as i hear it coming out of my monitors but i'm not even close!!!
yeah, and from what i heard in your video, i kind of believed you. but still, i just want to make sure and ask people's opinion about this gear, also it's quite pricey if you were not satisfied by it, ill cry blood lol
ho Braddah Cuz, sounds like you, JUST like you :-) you do the box justice. I'm still pretty stoked on my own decision to go back to my real rig, but not playing much at the moment so its a moot point. Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou !!!!
AhhhhhhhHaaaaaa I see you have bought the Kanikapila Box . What are you playing through? I am still experimenting but currently use or combine 2x QSC K-8's ' / 2x Atomic 1x12's / 2 Egnater 1x12's, 1x Vox 1x12 and or 1 x Fender 1x12 w/ A VHT power amp or Electro Harmonix 22 caliber amps
I run mine with a Mesa 50/50 poweramp and two 2x12... Sounds and behave like my Mesa Roadking II :) If you run it direct to a mixer, you'll get that controlroom-feeling. You know: amp and cab in the studio, and you playing in the controlroom. As intended :)
the effects are extremely nice...the reverbs are of a lexicon caliber, the delays are killer...there is a memory man type delay that is great and a tc 2290 emulation that is very buttery
and the pitch effects are right there with the eventide eclipse,
so taking those into consideration, it's worth the price right there.
the amp models need deep editing skills, and don't behave identically to or inspire like optimized amps/tubes/speakers, but provide endless tone tools and tweakability.
the deep editing of the models sounds about right. on the fractal site the guys talk about tweaking for MONTHS to get a good amp tone. sounds like too much work. those all in 1 effects box option sounds nice though.
Certainly doesn't take months to get a good amp tone. You can dial in a great tone in seconds. What may take months is learning every single little parameter and how they all interact together... but you don't have to know that or even tweak those to get great tone. So don't think there aren't any good tones out of the box because you can be up and running with one of these in a very short amount of time.
The dreamverb is beautiful... instantly reminded me of Eric Johnson...

i just hate the fizzy distortion sound of the axefx... sorry... the clean sounds are better... but that's easy enough on any modeler...

no worries--this was week one with it and micing a studio monitor. i didn't gig with it for a few months--had to figure out what i was doing.
best sounds out of it are DI

agree about the distortion - my old jmp-1 still sounds better, nice cleans though

Flip the phase on one of those mics and it sounds nice.

the Dumble sound is horrid.

@FlipsidesBand
i'd agree--some guys dial it in much better
i bought an ethos pedal and it solved my tone need i spent a year trying to dial in with the axe in one day.

Can you go direct to a mixer with this one ?
Id like to retire my VOX Tonelab !

@joelg125 animals as leaders is very good. I have friends in bands who play axe fx for studio or pre-production and they love it.

The Dumble preset sounds good. The rest? Not so much. I know the Axe can sound great, but you've got a lot more tweaking to do, imo.

how is it if an axe fx runs into, lets say, solid state amp? or a speaker/ PA? does it have that tube response, character, and warmness?
