This is my favourite Vanity track of all time. I lived in LA when she was on the scene I now live back in London where I was born and it saddens me that a lot of brtish people don't remember her BUT you and I and many others do.
Thank god for You and Youtube.
The line ring my door bell totally kills me, it reminds me of my first love which was never requited sadly. Sending you love from London xxx p.s. my cat is called Kitty and Vanity looks like a cat, so beautiful. Thanx again Hun xxxxxxx
I love this song but it was sad too. Didn'y know it was about Prince which makes it even sadder. I was obsessed with her and I was gay too so it wasn't about sex I felt something really deep about her, that she was quite etheral. This track is amazing.
Thanx so much for the post! xxx hehe I'm 44 now and wish I'd kept all the cassettes but thanx to people like you all is not lost.
@griscomm-You are right on the money! I also always thought Samuelle was a reference to Prince. Too bad the two of them couldn't make things work romantically speaking. I think they would have been awesome together.
Naughty little thing...We will never know...The prince and the showgirl.
Great...brings back memories. Wonderful album "Wild Animal". True 'night music'...Summernights, teenage years, nuff said? :-) Love this plastic eighties production. Used to good extent here.
@splankhoon - I thought I was the only kid listening to this stuff back then... All my friends thought I was into Vanity just because she looked good. I didn't deny it but I didn't add that I loved her lyrics and her voice too. She was my Madonna...
Oh my. I remember laying outside my aunts bedroom door while she would play this song on 45's I loved this song. Thanks for posting a memory from my childhood.

I was into Prince's Proteges. Vanity was so beautiful and still is. Sheila E was my favorite thought she was sexy and talented pure enerygy. Vanity this song horrible and I could hear the relapse in it.!!! Ughhh Motown dumped her contract after this. Good Move Berry Gordy
I never understood the Marilyn thing either. I'm not that fascinated by tragedy but Prince was weirder back then and was alwasy trying to 'create' sex symbols with his women. I cant think of anyone that comes close to beating her looks. She was so beautiful.
I loved this song! Someone asked who is Marilyn. Marilyn was a type of alter ego, the vision of sex and beauty that Prince wanted her to be. Prince was fascinated with Marilyn Monroe. Valerie is her true self. I always thought 'Samuelle' was Prince since Vanity wrote the lyrics to this song. If you listen to the song its quite sad from that perspective. 'thought it would last forever, i'm running down the aisle, wedding lace written all over. The prince and the showgirl."
Thanks! I've loved this song since Wild Animal came out! I did ALWAYS wonder about "Marilyn" and "Valerie". Your insight makes perfect sense! I love this song!
You are so right on point! I didn't know Prince was into MM but this is such an awesome song. The album was filled with lyrics that screamed volumes of her struggles with her good and evil sides. I still love this stuff. She was so under rated!
@griscomm I agree. . . . not to many people thought about the lyrics of this song. . . ."The Prince and the Show Girl" tells the whole story of Prince discovering her in the movie theater. . . . . .and that she actually thought they would get married is quite sad. . . .my favorite song from Vanity. . .. .Thanks for getting it too!!!!
I was young and invincible. Idolized by all the players. The finest girl by my side. Convertible top down. Wow! I was really there. Goodbye now. (LOL) Nice Song!
This is one of Vanity slower songs and it its very beatiful. I remember there used to be a video on here where she did it Live on Motowns reunion something in 1985. "I really want you.......I really doo.....I really Lovee youu.." man oh man VANITYGASM!! ;O
I've always questioned that line. Who the heck is Marilyn? Who the heck is Samuelle for that matter? What is she talking about!?!? lol! Oh well... I still love the song.
Dating a musician will make u wanna jump outta the window. I totally feel her pain.

She performed this song wonderfully on some awards show. She was wearing a long white lace dress. The performance was like a beautiful ballet.
