I was not able to make it into the D23 event either, but I was in the last group of the very last ride of the night for the general public. It was an awesome experience!
As DisMupPix010 said, it will return in May of 2011 as a completely reimagined experience in which guests travel to over 23 destinations (as opposed to just Endor), each flight randomly changing as it progresses, so no experience is the same.
Many Disney and Star Wars fans are concerned over the facts that the new installment may be planned as a prequel to the attraction, as well as that they might be removing Captain Rex... It's the lovable characters like him that make all the difference.
Its true, the new attraction will be set in-between "Revenge of the Sith" and "A New Hope".
Hopefully they will come up with new characters that are just as lovable, and hopefully there will somehow be nods to the original ride.
I myself am thinking that the queue will remain largely the same in terms of layout, but I guess it all depends on how extensive the re-imagining will be.
@DisMupPix010 - Considering that they have only until May, I'm guessing they won't alter the layout. The scenery is definitely subject to change, though...
Star Tours is closing for good? I usually don't go on it, but I did catch a ride on it on April 11. I didn't think it needed to close, but needed a makeover.
Thanks for posting a POV. I'll actually miss this ride.
@TheAmericanMedley - Over the years and into the 21st century, Star Tours slowly became outdated, and lost popularity... so they thought.
On the last day, the place was absolutely packed, and after the final flights, people were literally crying from all the emotion. This just goes to show how much this ride was appreciated and will be missed.
@TheAmericanMedley - I think Disney has the resources to at least look into the new no-glasses 3-D technology, such as that currently being used to develop the Nintendo 3DS system.
Glasses can be a major hassle, and somewhat ruin the realism of it all.
i herd they were going to randomize it so that every time you go on it's a new adventure new place but same characters
(one of my dads friends work there and i know most cast members so they tell me everything thats how i know)oh and they are making it 3d.

I hope they keep the announcement chime. That was my favorite sound effect used.

@AdrenalineAddict610
It was confirmed last year that they will be keeping the announcement chime. :-)

Yeah. I'm wondering if we we still see the G2 droids.

The ride will be updated and return in 2011 as "Star Tours: The Adventures Continue".

@Cooltomorrowkid I think the re-imagining is a great idea since this ride was outdated, but I don't like the idea of Real-D 3D. Sorry, 3D fans.
