It really was a dumb question, and Clinton proves it. Based on her response to Clinton, she was not directly affected either; people around her were affected. So how is she asking the candidates to connect with the public when SHE isn't able to do so herself? She put a double standard on that question, which is why it is not a question at all, but an attack.
Sure we can have booming economy, but I will always miss how simpler of a time the '90s (especially pre-1997) were technologically. You used landlines, sent snail mail before it was called that (a letter), had only a few dozen cable channels, VHS, plus people would feel freer going out. Nowadays, there's security signs at almost every house and business, people are much more reserved, and don't pause enough to understand the meaning of love and happiness. It's too rat racey nowadays.
@Misaelito1991 Thanks to the Republican's coming into the majority in Congress in 1994, and led by Newt Gingrich, Clinton was dragged kicking and screaming into budget sanity.
Try to base you comments on the facts of recent history.
Bush sr. took this country into a recession, Bill Clinton got elected and took us out of the recession and into a booming economy, Clinton left office, Bush JR took over and he took us yet into another recession!
I don't think it was a dumb question at all, although it resembles an attack more than a real question. I think the lady wanted to point out publicly that our "representatives" don't have much in common with the average American. And I would add that they have a lot MORE in common with their rich donors.
Can't blame the girl for her question, she can't be expected to know the difference between the national debt and an economic recession, I doubt most voters know the difference. Bush should have deferred to Perot
It was kind of expected for playboy Clinton to go bash happy Bush on the "No New Taxes" issue. But more of an asshole for saying simply "It's the Economy stupid" plus whats wrong with looking at you watch more than usual, i do it too but that dosn't mean i don't care about you or the american people.

The National Debt still isn't that important of an issue, but the Republicans will be harping on it all through 2012, even though 90% of the voting public has no idea what it is or what its function is

The girl asked a difficult (and somewhat loaded) question, but Bill Clinton certainly gave a clinic on how to handle it, whereas Bush gave a clinic on how NOT to handle it. Notice that Clinton didn't directly answer her question; he re-directed it by pointing it back to what OTHERS have been through. On the other hand, Bush acted like he just got shot and whined about what a bad question it was.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Yeah it's why Clinton was a political master, love him or hate him, Clinton was born for politics. Clinton dodged the question and never answered it, but he dodged it brilliantly.
This just goes to show how important rhetoric is. Two people saying absolutely nothing of any real meaning or significance and speaking empty platitudes; and one connects and sounds sincere while the other falls flat on his face.
This is a great example of how extending suffrage to woman and later to all adults over 18 no matter if they can read or have an IQ of 70 has changed US politics. In 1913, the year women got the vote, one of the leading scholars in America and the former president of Princeton, Woodrow Wilson was president. 80 years later we see how female suffrage changed US politics with politicians talking about how they "feel your pain" (aimed for the female vote). The focus shifts from issues to image/PR.
"President Bush, on January 22nd, 1963, when you were 39 years old and on the day when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, were you already secretly a high-ranking member of the CIA? And on that day, were you physically in Dallas, Texas, where President Kennedy was assassinated? And were you and/or your father, Prescott Bush, involved in his assassination?"
I live for the day when this question is directly put to George Herbert Walker Bush to answer while on camera.
That black women had no earthly idea that she got to have a conversation with a genocidal serial killer the likes of which no human mind could fathom. He's a bullying, hateful monster just like his snarling maniac of a father.
The woman is acting like poor people should only be president. She makes a good point but come on, she's grilling people for being rich. I'm a liberal, but I don't think that rich people are all spoiled brats.
unfortunately this dumbass who asked the question doesn't know the simple difference between national debt and personal financial difficulty. she is representative of the american public who doesn't know shit about their own government and most of the time their own situations. educate yourself. on another note, props to clinton, thats how you debate!
@calimar28 Why should they get more tax cuts. That's stupid. Care to justify your position after making it. If anything the middle class and less well of need more money these days. If a wealthy person cannot, even out of principle, help other people out then what's the point of a capitalist economy.
@rza1m Because nobody should pay a different percentage than someone else. Its unequal protection under the law. A politician can promise 99% he will cut their taxes to zero, if they vote for him, and raise the 1%'s taxes to 100%. So the 1% has no protection from the 99, you see? He is using the 1%'s money to buy the votes of the 99%, which is corrupt. It's "majority rule". Lets have a vote on if blacks should be deported to Africa. You wouldnt like majority rule
@calimar28 You are incredibly ignorant. No on is proposing raising the taxes of the highest earners to 100%, that is stupid. We just want exactly what you ask for, equal pay. Currently high earners are paying much less than the average person which i why people are so angry.
@rza1m But what is going on now is the same thing to a lesser degree, no? TO say "that group pay 10%, and that group who makes more pays 35%" is illegal. The 35% bracket is perhaps the 1%, and have no protection from the class envy thaty ou liberals constantly stoke in the 99%. Your party is illegal, immoral and in November, out of power.
@rb208 source? Also, how much tax can you even afford if you're earning around 30k.
Say you earn 30k a year and pay 15% which leaves you with 25.5k
How is somebody meant to live of that especially if they have a family. Face it, taxes are harder for people with less money. Is it really a crime helping people out. The right make it seem like charity's worst thing in the world. Personally, my parents raised me better.
You want a source? Get off your lazy ass and google it. You can find thousands and thousands or articles from every corner of the internet to prove it to you, dumbass. The fact that you're even asking for a source and didn't know this to begin with shows you for the ignorant, needy weakling you are. As for the right making it "seem like charity's worst thing in the world..." Conservatives give proportionately more money to charity than liberals. Google for a source dumbass.
@cvict6 The reason an economic system works is there is a flow of money. Those able to pay towards taxation are inclined to invest back into the same system that made them successful. The economy works through cooperative social effort. The building of roads, finance of educational institutes, and employment of public sector workers are a collaborative effort. Each person has to contribute, that includes everyone. Just because an individual amasses a certain wealth it doesn't give them exception
@rza1m exactly. im not saying they should pay that much taxes, i just dont like when the "99%" bitches about how the people who provide this country jobs should pay higher taxes
@rb208 Well if you're aware of that then you're aware of the bailout, where banks had to be given billions of dollars of taxpayer money because of risky financial derivatives trading. While the banks were essentially set to fail they were too big due to the amount of mortgage-backed debt, hence the 'subprime mortage crisis'.
In the end the banks got bailed out while a hole was left is the taxpayers pocket. To add insult to injury they still received bonuses which ranged in the billions.
"Each person has to contribute, that includes everyone."
Why do some people have to contribute more than others? People making less money have access to the same, if not more, government services as the rich. What if a rich person goes to a private school, uses private health insurance, etc. Should they have to pay for all the services they don't use? Technically the poor people getting the most of these government services should be paying the most, yet they pay nothing.
do you think it's easier to become rich if the people with money hoard it away rather than pay into the system that made them rich. That's antithetical to capitalism. And lets be honest there are more than a few rich people who inherent wealth rather than work their asses of like everyone else. The point is becoming rich should be encouraged but it's all a proponent of social responsibility. If you became successful help someone else achieve that.
"do you think it's easier to become rich if the people with money hoard it away rather than pay into the system that made them rich"
They don't "hoard" money away. They invest it like everyone else. Example: they put money in a savings account at a bank, which may loan this money to a business to hire workers, dumbass. This whole line of thinking you have rests on the collectivist Marxist notion that "the system" is responsible for making rich people rich. Move to Cuba asshole.
You think money is generated for the economy when a person puts their money in a bank. Seriously? During which part is the money made and for whom. Don't cry when the country turns to shit dude, you had it coming with thinking like this.
You have no idea what Marxists means, you're just using the Glen Beck definition.
@rza1m On top of that are you aware our economy is the way it is because of bankers. Let me break it down;
US GDP:14 Trillion $
Bank Bailouts:8 Trillion $
Which means we as taxpayers and contributors to the economy were robbed. These are the same people who talk about capitalism and free market but when their businesses are liquidated they need assistance. This was all possible due to repeated deregulation by politicians who were on the payroll of the same people who they were deregulating.
This little debate is over. I honestly can't even tell if you're just trolling now. You literally don't have any idea how banks operate. You have a picture of a fucking mass murdering, communist dog as your avatar. What did you major in? Let me guess, you have a laughable bachelors degree in liberal arts or sociology from some crap, diploma-machine school. Maybe I'm giving you too much credit, did you even go to college? Kill yourself... PS: I make more money than you :)
@cvict6 Well, I'm currently studying for my final year of economics in the London School of Economics, so I think I know what I'm talking about. And I can say with no ego at all that I doubt you make more money than me. I've been in business generating personal income since the age of 16. I think I have a sufficient idea of the world around me to understand basic corruption in politics. You're most likely just some stupid kid sat behind your laptop.
You gotta think it's hard for these guys to keep a straight face when debating each other being as they were both collaborating in years prior in a massive money laundering scheme from cocaine being smuggled into the states from several Contra camps in Nicaragua. Why did Clinton pardon Dan Lassater?
@jon00769 Yeah, Bush Sr. just seemed completely clueless. For all the flak the other one termer President of modern times, Jimmy Carter has got, at least Carter put up more of a man's fight against Reagan in the debates, even if he did get smacked down with lines like "are you better off today then 4 years ago?". Bush Sr. got smacked down here by Clinton and just didn't know what to say.
She looked really really stupid on national television. But politics are how you LOOK when you're talking, not about what you're SAYING, and Clinton looks good when he talks. Sad.
Neither candidate's statement differed much in substance. The magic lay in the delivery. George H.W. Bush appeared rather standoffish, confrontational, and a bit patronizing (I listened at a black church....). Clinton read his mistakes, and gave a masterful response, filled with empathy and understanding. It's not what is said, it's how.
@Zorn27 There is a special method of deception, that the best of deceivers use...
They tell the truth a few times consistently and then they slip in a lie.
You can be incredibly strategic with deception, and it can go unnoticed.
Clinton handled this very nicely, the force is strong with him... Look at George Bush behind him looking in awe with his jaw dropped and drooping face. It looked as if George was pleasurably drooling for a brief moment in his stupor.
Fuck hes good. I mean Bush was technically right I guess but the way Clinton communicated with her while bringing in a legitimate greivance about economic theory was masterful.
How can Bush inherit the politics to his son and how can Clinton inherit the politics to his wife. This is no democracy. They can only build war not peace. The US-american people have to wake up and take to the streets and demonstrate against their politicians. No war!
the lady asking the question has no idea what she's talking about. Bush actually wants to answer the question.. but the national debt doesn't affect her friend's car payments or house payments at all.
Budget surplus, boomingn economy, excellent social security, best ever relationship with our allies. All destroyed by a commission that downgraded the terror operation UNTIL THEY FUCKING KILLED MY BROTHER IN 9/11, hen left a comprehensive strategy to kill bin laden, and Karl rove and the other texans paid it no head. Fucking fuck you.
Ya im really sure that he is worried about his grandchildren's fineness ? They have more money then god! And how funny is it that he could not understand that question , it's like asking an alien to make you a peanut butter sandwich!
@6ft7inHIBread:Where McCain beat Obama all over on substance, and it did not matter because of the media image of Obama and the real Obama bore no resemblance to one another.
Its weird to see a presidential race where both candidates are competent. My first election that I was old enough to even recognize was the Gore vs Bush jr. and ever since, it has gone down hill
2:30 Clinton jumps in and does the opposite - he empathizes with her concerns, explains how the situation occurred, and offers a solution. He absolutely nailed it (and probably her later on too).
Different presidents but still the same old shit. We will change this and that OH REALLY? No!!! were just gonna screw you over some more how does that sound.... YEH MORE PLEASE.
Hmm... All of the problems that they're talking about in this 1992 (I was 5 years old then) debate are still the hot topic now, almost 20 years later.
It really was a dumb question, and Clinton proves it. Based on her response to Clinton, she was not directly affected either; people around her were affected. So how is she asking the candidates to connect with the public when SHE isn't able to do so herself? You have no idea what Marxists means, you're just using the Glen Beck definition.
rza1m 4 weeks ago
@rza1m On top of that are you aware our economy is the way it is because of bankers. Let me break it down;
US GDP:14 Trillion $
Bank Bailouts:8 Trillion $
Which means we as taxpayers and contributors to the economy were robbed. These are the same people who talk about capitalism and free market but when their businesses are liquidated they need assistance. This was all possible due to repeated deregulation by politicians who were on the payroll of the same people who they were deregulating.
rza1m 4 weeks ago
@rza1m If they are able to become successful, great. But this requires them to pay back proportionately into the system. Not doing so is just greed.
rza1m 4 weeks ago
@rza1m
PS: I make more money than you :)
cvict6 4 weeks ago

It's GREAT to see three candidates debating. I hate a 2-party system.
TurboFuss1 1 month ago

How can Bush inherit the politics to his son and how can Clinton inherit the politics to his wife. This is no democracy. They can only build war not peace. The US-american people have to wake up and take to the streets and demonstrate against their politicians. No war!

What a contrast. Bush was being borderline antagonistic:
0:46 "Are you suggesting..."
1:19 "Well listen, you oughtta..."
1:53 "But I don't think it's fair to say..."
2:30 Clinton jumps in and does the opposite - he empathizes with her concerns, explains how the situation occurred, and offers a solution. He absolutely nailed it (and probably her later on too).
