puppy mills are places where purebred dogs are used to produce purebred puppies for profit. the only thing is alot of these puppy mills do not take care of the animals and the animals are in bad shape. if you ever watch ANIMAL PLANET then watch ANIMAL COPS and you will see. they have puppy mills on there all the time and the mills are shut down due to the neglect of the animals and their living conditions.

@hhamor Puppy Mill dogs don't always go to Pet Stores. I work for a Pet Store and we know the breeders very well and pick the dogs up at their home. They're always clean, very respectable people who usually have large homes and wide acres of land.

Buying your dog from 'Private Breeders' never guarantees that you are not getting your dog from a Puppy Mill. Pet Stores give you health guarantees and have contracts for these reasons. We would not purposely purchase dogs with health problems.

a puppymill is sort of like a peppermill.

You put the puppy in a very small container that has a grater at the bottom and a top that spins.

When you are have a salad or need small puppy flakes, then you turn the puppy mill above a bowl.

The dog usually is scared at first, but after a while he or she seems to get used to it, some even grow to like it, if they can make it that far.

Sadly most dogs die before you get 1/4 of the way through it.

Pet Stores advocate PuppyMills! They buy their dogs there because it's cheap and they could profit more by selling the consumers sickly puppies for double the price!

With all the love, money, vet bills & affection I have invested with my dog - there is nothing my vet can do to save her, I wasn't educated before about PuppyMills and their ties with Pet Stores, so buyers beware!

Go to the AKC website, investigate your breeder, do not be afraid to ask for questions or concerns regarding health!

Who the hell are you? My pug sleeps every night with me. You obviously are not a dog lover. My pug is clean, clean, clean. He gets a bath every 2 weeks. Some people just don't get it. And if you think it's "gross" to have your dog sleep with you, don't get a dog. My dog is the love of my life. He hugs up with me at night and we are both happy and content. Lab mixes that look like this in the thousands of shelters all over the country > some AKC labs you have seen (in numbers). Most people will not buy a lab with a narrow face/body unless, like said earlier, it is a field lab that needs the added endurance. We have a female yellow pointing lab with a narrow muzzle and a huge black female lab with a blocky head. Yellow=run all day. Black=spend all day in the pool or giving kisses

Our yellow lab..which has a more narrow muzzle is what most would consider a field lab and she has endless energy. Now, given the much larger number of mixed labs out there than purebred, you are trying to say that there is a 90% chance of this being purebred?? Based upon what? Odds? If you flip that around, the chances are probably much closer. Or are you saying its 90% purebred? :)

As a rescuer, and a dog behavior counselor, I see only too many of the sad situations caused by puppy mill breeders. Many are diseased and basically unhealthy. AND BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY............NO REPUTABLE BREEDER WILL SELL TO A PET STORE! The pet stores try to make their customers believe that they work with an independent breeder, but this simply is NOT TRUE! I pray that your book starts a revolution!

The Horrible circle of life is that Puppy mills produce too many dogs, and sell them for a few dollars a piece to pet stores. The dogs are sold for hundreds, and unsespecting buyers get dogs with temperament disorders, and then, most of them all end up at a rescue. God bless our animal rescuers, but they are tired of it. The Story of Penelope opens the door. I love kids and I love dogs. I want them to have the best of both worlds.
