This vid scared me so bad I had to post another comment. To belay correctly you need a climbing harness, carabiner, a figure 8, and gloves. Keep BOTH hands on the rope at all times. As the climber moves up KEEP THE SLACK OUT OF THE ROPE. If the climber falls or pushes off, put your trail hand in the small of your back. You can catch or lower a climber easily this way. It's the climbers job to make sure the protection doesn't pull out, the belayers job to "catch". Stay safe.
What in the fuck was that?? When I was college my room mate was into climbing big time. He had books and maps of every route up every mountain in the world. He was a tall skinny dude with a bunch of equipment. I went with him often, I couldn't climb nearly as well as him, so I would belay. He would often not be able to reach the top and want me to let him down, I never let him free fall so much as 1 inch.
I'm just stunned at the performance of the belayer. just to let everyone know the role of the belayer is critically important and has your life in there hands. that could have been so much worse. if you are belaying for someone don't think that it is a secondary role. it is a duo that goes climbing and as a consequence it is relatively safe activity. as we see here the climber may have thought he was top roping but as it turned out all of the sudden he was (just about) free climbing.
The lesson learned here is that belaying takes 100% attention at all times. Its not as easy as many people make it out to be. I always see people shooting the shit while belaying or half assing around. I treat climbing the way I treat firearms, with 100% respect and discipline at all times. The only thing keeping that climber alive is your break hand and it better be a bomb proof grip on the rope. Once that rope starts moving 32 ft per second per second, its going to be very hard to stop.
I would smash my belayer in the mouth if this happened to me! If the guy doesn't know what exactly to do and do it safely I would not put my life in his hands! How about a five minute training session or throw a GriGri on that putz, stupid, stupid, stupid!
When I went for a beginner lesson, they guy kept saying: "it's the responsibility of the climber to know, choose, and trust the belayer. If the climber falls, it's their own own fault for choosing that belayer"
I can understand that argument...but that only seems like half the case. It's the belayer's responsibility to say if they are comfortable or knowledgeable enough to do it.
Congratulations. You LITERALLY got it on video? I thought you just FIGURATIVELY got it on video. You and your friends are going to get snuffed out by Darwin's Law. Have fun drooling on yourselves and getting stuff on video literally before your somewhat timely demise.
The climber should know and understand the limitations of the people he goes climbing with and especially who is belaying him. If that belayer grabbed the rope above the ATC he clearly didn't know what he was doing and it's up to the people around him to either train him well enough to trust or not allow him to belay. It can be the difference between living and dying.
Climbing for years with all manner of belay devices. 8s, Grigri, etc, etc. This stuff SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. I'd have kicked the shit out of my belayer too if I hadn't already broken my ankles or died. Climbing is safe with PROPER MENTORING AND INSTRUCTION. Learn the freaking fundamentals first!!!!
@asddge His right hand should _never_ have let go of the portion of the rope below the ATC. In the description it says he grabbed above the ATC, which means that he had know way to stop the rope once it started slipping through the ATC. The correct way to belay is to always have the rope locked off below the ATC and to only unlock it to feed more rope to the climber, which is still safe because it can be pulled into a locked position easily if the climber falls.
Could anyone explain to me what does it mean "to get something on video"? Despite the obvious... (to record something on "tape") I'm not a native speaker...
@dleonardcs The grigri isn't the only belaying device in the world... Also the grigri is no substitute for an attentive (and competent) belayer... I would be more nervous if I had that idiot belaying me with a grigri, than if someone competent would be doing the same with a figure 8...
@kondadotm I know thw grigri isn't the only belaying device in the world. My question about this video is: the belayer is using a grigri or another device?
@dleonardcs Ok, sorry then. The description says he was using an ATC (black diamond airtraffic controller -- i.e. tube device, similar to the Petzl Verso/Reverso3) that's why I got your question wrong...
You idiots. That COULD have been deadly. Nice. No helmet either. Well I'm glad it worked out for you getting it on video and all. Buy some gloves and learn to belay. top rope if you can't catch lead falls. Idiots.
@halleck3 I would have done that. I would never climb with people that have experience that don't extend much further than the local recreation center's rock wall or Dick's Sporting goods. Do it smart, find your local rock climber community surround yourself with knowledgeable safe climbers that know what they're doing. The fucktard should probably wear a helmet.
serious question - what was the belayer doing? there seems to be very little force on the rope stopping the fall, and the belayer doesn't fly into the air, confirming that he wasn't locking the rope. firstly - why?! secondly - why didn't he apologise/you yell at him?!
definitely important to make sure your belayer knows how to belay :) this guy is lucky he wasnt any higher up when he fell, would have been much much worse
seriously, the climber didnt fall, he jumped off, and i think the whole thing was planned, because no belayer can be so unable, and the climber stopped falling about 1 or 1 and a half meter above the ground...
@indierektmusick yah now that you say that, it does sorta look like he jumped off....conviently right when the camera started...AND he didn't look to pissed at his belayer, which i know every climber would be
Why was the belayer standing 15 ft away from the wall?? What was going on that was so important he not paying attention? Why are you so stoked you got that on video??? HE ALMOST FUCKING DIED!!!!!!!!!!
man i would fukin hit the guy on belay he wasent even holding the rope. if you look at the way he grabs it at the end looks like he got rope burn.what a moron
bulls&*t...the belayer c^$ked up, equipment was exactly right but he was holding the line direct above the belay loop, funny watching him look at his burned hands afterwards. Good for saving his mate but learn from the burn buddy, no matter how unlikely you think it'll be, get ready for the fall.
bulls&*t...the belayer cocked up, equipment was exactly right but he was holding the line direct above the belay loop, funny watching him look at his burned hands afterwards. Good for saving his mate but learn from the burn buddy, no matter how unlikely you think it'll be, get ready for the fall.

If you have a newbie belaying, what the hell is the third guy doing filming (and I mean literally filming) instead of helping the newbie? If he was not also a newbie of course, in case the accident is just waiting to happen. Morons.
@smokeshows69 sorry to point out that your a moron but the belayer did fuck up as he was holding the rope on the climbers side not on the belay side of the atc when you learn more about climbing, you can come back and comment, till then stay off the rock cause your dumber than this guys belayer.
well, you made it clear that you got that on video. but are you sure that you "litterally got that on video dude"? cuz it seems that u filmed that in a more metophorical sense
If my 2nd did that to me he'd be a dead man....an then id start on the cameraman!!! climbing is a dangerous sport,as all of us know, this whole vid is a farce..including Brett(the climber),he should have been on loads of climbs with his 2nd,that gains a mutual trust, but he's just got a pair of dick's( one to belay and one to film) to make him look good on camera,he's lucky to be alive
Id use the cameramans "video" to break the fucking belayer's fingers if i was on the end of that rope...what a pair of fucking moron's "ive got that on video dude!!!" By rights he should have been talking to a dead body...very very lucky lad!!
I'd never want to see that guy on a rope again. Burned hands is a ridiculously small price to pay for potentially killing the climber. Just goes to show you that you need to know your belayer is competent before you trust him/her with your life.
I hope the belayer lost his fingers due to gangrene from the rope burn wound and the camera man got tonsillitis after not even caring if he was ok. because he was to excited about his stupid video
im glad he literally got it on video cause if he only figurtivally got it on video he wouldnt have got anything on video and we wouldnt know that he it a moron, literally. lol
What a pity nobody got this on video.... they coulda put it on youtube and showed half a million people they were a mindless moron who didn't even have the sense to ask the climber if he was injured.... ok, sorry, I didn't mean to call you a moron... I meant fuckwit.
Yo, the beayer is the hero here the way I see it. The leader probably told him to take him off belay cuz it was just that easy. But unfortunately he found a spider or snake or got a cramp and had to jump for it. *accidents happen* The bottom line is accidents do happen to all of us. Even stupid and embarrassing accidents. Therefore people should not be leading stuff they are going to fall on for 5 years. Then they can have* less* accidents that are stupid and embarrassing.
you got on your vid, i would think you would ask if hes ok if i was the guy climbing i would of beat your ass for saying that, my point exactly is stupid kids.
Gloves would have cut down on the injuries to the belayer's hands but wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome of the climber. Gloves weren't the problem nor was not having a Grigri. Grigri's help with inattentive belaying but doesn't improve the inexperience of your partner. I would hope that some veteran takes these kids under his wing and teaches them some valuable skills/techniques like I was fortunate to have had nearly thirty years ago.
Watch the belayer as he looks at his hands after the rope whips through them and note that he has NO hands on the rope after his partner touches the ground. Although a very fortunate and lucky outcome, this is a textbook example of how serious things can get when things go wrong in climbing, in this case from a number of basic belayer errors and in communication between the climber/belayer team. Have a safety ritual that you perform every and all the time you tie into the rope together.
@halleck3 I don't know who that belayer is, but where I come from you have to pass an exam before it's legal to belay someone and if this happened it will take a while before you can try again. That guy is a total retard.

You got it on video? Too bad i have to hold my laptop sideways to watch it!
nbacrush2000 1 year ago
"I got that on video" probably would not be the first thing I would say, or even think of, at that moment.
tydek07 1 year ago
I'd never want to see that guy on a rope again. Burned hands is a ridiculously small price to pay for potentially killing the climber. Just goes to show you that you need to know your belayer is competent before you trust him/her with your life.

dude i litterally got tht on video lol

I hope the belayer lost his fingers due to gangrene from the rope burn wound and the camera man got tonsillitis after not even caring if he was ok. because he was to excited about his stupid video

What a pity nobody got this on video.... they coulda put it on youtube and showed half a million people they were a mindless moron who didn't even have the sense to ask the climber if he was injured.... ok, sorry, I didn't mean to call you a moron... I meant fuckwit.

It's a good thing he had a rope tied to him, who was supposed to be holding it?
HeadNtheClouds 1 year ago
Yo, the beayer is the hero here the way I see it. The leader probably told him to take him off belay cuz it was just that easy. But unfortunately he found a spider or snake or got a cramp and had to jump for it. *accidents happen* The bottom line is accidents do happen to all of us. Even stupid and embarrassing accidents. Therefore people should not be leading stuff they are going to fall on for 5 years. Then they can have* less* accidents that are stupid and embarrassing.

you got on your vid, i would think you would ask if hes ok if i was the guy climbing i would of beat your ass for saying that, my point exactly is stupid kids.
j4lbert859 1 year ago

Have a safety ritual that you perform every and all the time you tie into the rope together.

wrxmike123 1 year ago 2
@halleck3 I don't know who that belayer is, but where I come from you have to pass an exam before it's legal to belay someone and if this happened it will take a while before you can try again. That guy is a total retard.
