The engine was mounted and started as it came out of the factory box. As it turns out, the valve adjustments on every cylinder was badly out of specification. This I believe now was the reason for the very difficult starting. The engine has been completely torn apart and overhauled after only one hours running time. After 3 1/2 years it is now back together and will be test run again this Summer, 2010.
@JOCKATEO that was a rotory engine- not wankel rotary but like WWI airplane rotary engines. It looked like a radial engine, but the crankshaft was stationary and the crankcase and cylinders all spun. Google it. Pretty interesting design.
lol just cracking up listenign to u huffing and puffing tryna get the damm thing started. i have a saito 180 and just that i know is a bitch to start !
As a frm. USCG. aircraft mech. on HU16e Albatross seaplanes . I love the sound of a radial engine running even if its a mini version. I,d like to see someone design a scaled down metal /wood version of the ol, Goat. I started building a wood homebuilt plane called the Sirroco with my dad when I was 9 so I have first hand experiance with wood working as well as metal work on seaplanes.I worked at DeanFranklin Aviation after the CG. restoreing a Grumman Goose so I believe "Radials Rule ! "
xKmotx, I enjoyed watching this; I always enjoy seeing/hearing a fine-tuned engine running, especially a miniature radial engine like yours...I'm guessing it's expensive, correct?
hovanti, this engine is the lowest cost commercially available model radial. Currently selling for between $1228 and $1477 in Germany and England, respectively.
Whoa nice engine! But jease mister you had me nearvous when you moved the prop with your hand. I had a friend that ignited the glow plug on an rc pLANE, and all the sudden it fired and hit his hand. He never touched the propeler, it started because the engine happened to be on the compression stroke, so when he put the glow igniter on the plug, it ignited the fuel in the cylinder which caused him a great deal of pain when the propeller hit his hand. Please be more carefull.
when he moved the prop in the direction of normal rotation it looked like he first disconnected either the magneto or power source. Every other propeller movement was against the normal rotation and the engine will not fire at all when the prop is moved against rotation
@1975Amcpacer I had that happen once when i was running a thin carbon prop. It sliced roughly 1-2cm into my hand. turns out the chances of it happening are 1 to 100 million
Both the four stroke ASP engines I own had leaking exhaust valves when new. The dam things would never start or tick over properly, I thought it was a poor quality carb and had considered changing it for an O.S. item, but now I have lapped the valves with chrome polish to get a perfect seal and it has cured all problems. This may be the same thing here on that lovely radial.

love the mini technology. But the cost is well beyond what most rc hobby peeps can endure. None the less, it's wonderful to view this vid.

Heard bad things about the asp radials , like the bottom end crankpins worj their way loose and the engine disintegrates inside . Cool sound tho

Be sure .. it will fire backwards, too. It will not rum a long time, but from priming there is enough fuel in the cylinders for a few ignitions.

Its absolutely beautiful. I cant imagine the running cost though of a 4 c.i.d. engine running on $30 a gallon glow fuel.

It is a glow plug ignition engine.

Thanks for the comments everyone. The sound of the model radial engines is unbeatable! This video is only Part 1. Be sure to look at apart 2 as well!
Click on "More from this user" and look for Part 2.
