You'd never here Hollywood trying to sell a movie in today's dumbed-down culture on the basis that it will "challenge your intellect." Movies that do so nowadays, like "The Fountain," perform poorly at box office, unfortunately. And it was marketed more as a simple love story than a metaphysical journey.
Yup, and to add to the problem is these huge multiplexes that is modelled to make money in the shortest possible time and fill it as much as possible.
I almost posted a snarky comment about how boring it was to me @ twelve when I 1st saw it, but yr post is so much more insightful re: the dumbing down of cinema. Thanks.
