Amazing to see! Such a rescue couldn't possibly happen without the responsiveness and care of all of these volunteers. And not *just* volunteers, but trained and experienced medical personnel. Thank God for every one of them.
They were slimed in an algae bloom, which results in their feathers not being waterproof. So they can't stay in the water and they beach themselves. They need to be in the water to find their food and avoid predators. They become dehydrated on land and starve to death. They develop keel, feet, and hock sores when they are out of the water too long. For the birds, it's similar to an oil spill. Slimed or oiled feathers offer no insulation, so they can quickly die of hypothermia.
