  • hmm what about the word guilt, you don't hear the u you here the i. english has broken so man of its spelling rules.

  • Nifty! This will be great fo my English students! Thanks for posting it!

It would have been super, though, if they hadn't left out some interesting bits:

    - diptongs which do not sound like either of the vowels that make them up, such as "OO", "OU/OW", "AU/AW".

    - "y" is not a vowel.

  • @Akkleptos Y is either a vowel or a consonant depending on its place in the word.

  • Aw, my favourite song from that program. I wish the Barnaby B. (don't-call-me-Buster) Busterfield III Memorial Public Library was in my town!

  • @PhillipTTruong *claps for you*

  • @PhillipTTruong LMFAO

  • I looked for these lyrics for a while, so I thought someone else might appreciate them... ENJOY! When two vowels go walking The first one does the talking In "boat" you hear the "o" and not the "a" In "meat" you hear the "e" The "a" sits quietly The second vowel you see but you don't say But... Shh! Just the two of us together In "train" and "pail" and "rain" The "a" speaks up; the "i" does not
  • @JewlTonz Good idea, Jewl!

Also occasionally featured in Between The Lions is "Vowel Boot Camp." The only problem I have with this song is that it just uses A, E, I, O, U, and Sometimes Y. I have always taught the vowel sounds as sometimes including W (as in know, show, blow, throw).

And, vorephilia is correct that English is a difficult language (mostly because it's a polyglut of words gathered from hundreds of different languages and dialects [

    with their pronunciationa often intact].)

  • But... Shh! Let me explain

    When two vowels go walking

The first one does the talking

In "brain" you hear the "a" but not the "i"

In "soap" the "o" is clear

    The "a" you never hear

In "say" you say the "a" and not the "y"

    But... Shh! Isn't it neat?

But... Shh! It can't be beat!

But... Shh! It's such a dream!

  • Don't mean to boast But here's a toast We're quite a team! When two vowels go walking The first one does the talking I'm sorry, number two, it's such a shame Although it gives you pain The rule is very plain When two vowels walk The first one says its name! But... Shh! Yes, when two vowels walk The first one says its name!

  • This is proven false. What about the word "you". When two vowels walk, the first one says its name but in "you", it says the second name. Sigh, english is a very complicated language.

  • English is filled with exceptions, this is one of them. This rule is the norm, but that doesn't make it false.

I wish you the best in your studies.

  • I raised my kids on PBS and then when I started having grandchildren, they were raised on it, too. The best thing that ever happened to PBS Kids was the advent of Between The Lions. Great songs, great messages, great fun....

  • I agree! It's the best show. It's very enjoyable for both children and adults. The writers have a great sense of humor. :)

  • @cqsallie electric company!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • Boener is NOT Pronounced BAY-Ner.

  • That is exactly correct! Although it gives him pains, the truth of this remains: When two vowels walk the first one says its name....

    LOL!!!!

  • thnx i had 2 teach my sibling this

  • never knew letters could be so cute

    lol
