Just beautiful. I learned about hang gliders in the early 70s. We had to wait in a library after school, and I discovered the Rogallo glider in a magazine. Been flying since 1981. These videos show the pure joy of flight you are experiencing and a true pioneering spirit. Thank you for posting.
i grew up in the seventies and all i have ever wanted to do was to build ultra-lights and hang gliders and fly them with my friends, i have done none of that because like the song says "the art of flying is dying" the art of flying did die and it died
becuz of so much evil, warmongering and oppression in the world
iinstead of the people of the earth wanting to live like and living like eagles we have chosen to all live like chickens
i wanna fly sooooo bad i built a hanglider at my house but it was to small and also preatty heavy so it didn;t fly, but i felt the wind trying to pull it up...
These guys where true adventurers. Glad thier videos are here to be seen. Thier help with developement has allows me to fly my Quicksilver MX out of my back yard. Up Up and away.
I am still flying and even higher that then. I flew last Monday in Canada for one hour and thirty six minutes and up to 4,200 feet above the tow field. Flew in New York three weeks ago up to 6,000 feet above take off.
Great to capture this on film! My old man got involved in hang gliding the mid 70's (southern England). I was 7 or 8 but I remember a competition at Mere where a huge target was draped onto a corn field, but the conditions were sooo good no one wanted to come down all afternoon! I think a festival party kicked off in the gusty thermals around the tents! Glory days in school holidays. Do you have footage of Rosilli in Wales or English sites from this period, would love to see them!?
Im gonna go out on a limb, and say, this the most exciting video Ive ever seen on you tube,Im afraid of heights, but this makes me want to overcome my fears, and fly...... Id like to see some footage with David Gilmore of Pink Floyd,as a background

This is really special footage. I'm glad it was caught on film and posted on you tube. Love the lyrics to the music. After seeing these gliders it makes me appreciate my Wills Wing falcon 3 that much more.
Simply incredible. You were ahead of your time. Still haven't gone airborn. My greatest fear. My greatest fantasy. This was the era that made it seem so unbelievable. Beautiful.
I still don't understand how hang gliders turn when the center of gravity is shifted to one side. What is the physical reason for the turn? Anyone?
My take is because the side of the wing where the shift took place will be at a progressively lower plane than the other side, hence that wing faces a higher drag total, pushing it back more than the the other side. The opposite effect will take place at the opposite wing. It will be pushed up so facing a lower total drag.
Or, one side will have more mass than the other. When all things kept constant, the weighted side will slow down. Because one side slows, air pressure varies on each wing, tilting the hang glider although has no effect on the turn.
In about 1974 I nearly learnt to fly, but my mother told me no, I had to wait for the gliders to improve. I'm kinda glad she did. Started in 1984 and it was a completely different world. I don't think I would have survived the 70s.
Thanks for all of your comments. It has been fun making these videos. I have 12 hours of hang gliding movies on super 8 so I have lots more of the old stuff from my 36 years of hang gliding.
Great film clips! You mentioned Gary Harkins. I bought my Moyes Maxi from Gary in the Warren Dunes parking lot. I bought a few wires and spars from the Braddocks back then. I must try to get some of my archived clips uploaded. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face.
Beautiful video Bob! And yes the music is perfect. I've heard it said that some of us are astronomers and some of us are astronauts. There's no disputing your place.
And thanks for chronicling on film so much of our sports history these past 40 years!
I do keep wondering that the more that I think about the many instances that I have had along with close calls. I also saw the video that Maureen to at Gary Harkins place when you took us there after the Frankfort meet 30 years ago.
Very good.... i started handgliding in 1981 and still continue... endless summer..

Its quite complicated stuff envolving redused lifet and drag, but the easies way to ecplain is Its just like leaning on a bicycle.
