hi folks, i'm just on a bit of an outreach truth be told, i've recently discovered i have romanichal blood (sounds a bit crap maybe) anyway, i'm on an outreach for my roots and the family are reluctant to mention yunno. Anyone have any ideas how i can get more "in touch" so to speak. Thanks all :) x
@LadLiam what was the family name and where were they from? That would be a good place to start if your family are romani do you still have the language Mherime culture?
@Dividyneh yes they are a bit whiter but still romanies or sinti even have seats in the International Romani Council not Roma though. Only Eastern European gypsies are Roma.
so the romanichal people can trace their ancestry from northern india, does this apply to all travellers e.g the scottish gypsies with scottish surnames?
@saxsteadwba yes and no, highland travellers are a seperate group. lowland gypsies like the kennedys, faa or recently descendents of english and welsh romanies are in scotland too. highland travellers that speak gaelic and irish travellers arnt. they are non-gypsies who took up the lifestyle.
I love that he very clearly makes the point that I'm always trying to make and that is that "Romanichals (and the Sinti-Manouch cousins) are NOT Roma".
No sinti, manouch, spanish kale, british Romanichals are not Roma we are a branch of the romani people as they are but not the same. I guess the two groups have similar ancestry and languages but culturally they are different. Not any less a gypsy and not any less Romanies but different. Languages are different too I as a British romani speaker can hear some words of my romanies in the Roma language, but it is different. I guess both groups have spent so long apart but are similar in some ways.
Its a Roma cultural trait Sinti, British Romanichal, manouch and spanish kale were like that too some 200-300 years ago but have learned other trades and such. Also some Roma will have been brought to the west to steal by criminal gangs there was a documentary about it a while ago. Roma are being exploited but are under pressure to beg also most are unskilled and know no better. While others are decent and work hard for their families.
My mother is decended from the Youngs of the English Scotish borders does anyone have any information relating to any of these gypsy clans??? Youngs Blyths Faas Taits Gordons Fleckies Douglas
Sorry mate i heard that the MacPhees are not Romani chil gypsies. Their clan was made homeless by the crown and they are not Romani, and never came out of india. If you have the Faa or Blythe, they are Romani gypsies. Mcphees have more in common with the Irish ones.
Actually there are four non related groups in Scotland who have very little to do with each other. The McPhees are highland travellers while in the south their are irish travellers, showmen and also scottish Romani families who came originally from wales and England. All spreak different languages and no they tend not to mix. Just because the term traveller applies to them all doesnt mean they are the same come from the same culture or wish to mix. Not all travellers are the same.
Its not discrimination yes we are all travellers but of different cultures languages and traditions. Irish ones stick together, as do the highland ones and us Romani in Scotland. Some families have mixed recently but its not really that common. I guess its always been that way I guess every society has a pecking order we're all human after all.
Yeah, guess so, seonidh, every society does have its pecking order. Sadly, that's the reason for so much hardship and unhappiness in this world. Look at the Untouchables in India as one extreme example.
I must be way down the order, I can't see anyone below me. lol!
"I must be way down the order, I can't see anyone below me. lol!"
Why would you say that mate? I'd look at your character first as you could be a gentleman but a rogue just look at the MPs. I would never look down on another travelling group if your a member of that group. Peace.

Surely travellers don't get involved in the snobbishness we get from home dwellers.
Does it matter if the MacPhees are true Romany or descendants of brave clansmen evicted from their lands?

That saddens me, seonidh. I thought travellers were maybe different from we house dwellers with all our class differences and snobbishness.
Seems discrimination is a trait common in all humanity.
