I read in the NY Times yesterday that Mr. Hallberg is joining the Bolshoi! The first American to do so. He'll be coached by Mr. Alexander Vetrov. Congrats to Mr. Hallberg and I can't wait to see clips of his performances with my fave company, the Bolshoi Ballet.
Hallberg is THE most sensitively danced, beautifully modulated ALbrecht I've ever seen. I did see Dowell, Nureyev, Baryshnikov; to my eyes Hallberg gets closer than anyone to idealizing ALbrecht into a figure she would HAVE to love "because he is a good dancer" and has an inner refinement and personal delicacy that one wants to approach. He is MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN she is, and can get closer through his softer body and more sensitive feet than Vasiliev could to Vasiliev's ideal.
@1psoas9 Hallberg is in fact incredibly ugly in person He has marfans syndrome hence his extreme elasticity but onstage he transforms. In the flesh he's a total munter.
@kimmois1 that really explains a lot about David! I didn't know that about him!!! :O I still think he's gorgeous thought :) I mean as a dancer... I never have seen him in person... and in other videos he seems to be a very humble and nice person :)
@kimmois1 i don't think Marfan's Syndrome effects the way your face looks regarding attractiveness though, he just has a dark and mysterious look. How did you know he has this disease?
@tutus4life No babe, what I meant was that his face does have the features of Marfan's though of course attractivenes is subjective, to many he may very possibly be beautiful facially even off stage. Google Marfans and the facial characteristics. He definitely has a mild form, not the extremes, but you'll notice similarities in eyes, facial shape, skull structure - and of course the extreme elasticity.
@tutus4life Oh I know quite a few things, in fact which high ranking male principal with one of the big six companies in fact started life as a woman? You'd be surprised.
there's a GREAT difference from this giselle and the giselle she represented acouple of years ago... she looks better, her techinique itsbetter, and she looks more femenine and softer and she looks more refined in every single aspect, she has truly worked a lot and has improved a lot!! i love her!
@p40531 Natalia Osipova is my personal Nr 2. My Prima Ballerina Assoluta is Svetlana Zakharova. It is not a decision of skill, it is Swan Lake. I havent seen a production of Swan Lake with Natalia Osipova. Swan Lake is the most important ballet (my opinion) and Svetlana Zakharova's Odette/Odile is the very best. This is the benchmark :)
giselle has that expression on her face that the dance th of harlem teacher always said to avoid-the highly raised eyebrow, suffering look-although here it's happiness
OMG that's one of the best Albrecht i've ever seen...if not THE best. Few Albrechts can be this expressive and technical at the same time. So few. And his dance really touched me.
@Flaflaronio haha i noticed that too he was like "wtf is he saying, youre crazy" i'm sure he was upset that he didnt understand russian and he's trying to create a character at the same time
@pediatrapaola Vasiliev was the best Albrecht. It was a very great honour for David Hallberg to be coached by him. Hallberg is technically excellent, but does not have the magnetism of a Vasiliev or Ruzimatov - imo, of course!
@Pearlaceous saw ruzimatov many times live, once saw also in giselle ,with visneva,he was not a particulary convincing albrecht, not technically off course,i prefered him in other more exotic roles ,his physique his features all of him ,made ohim perfect in corsaire ,bayaderka ,sherazade, etc, and was also perfect in bejart repertoire, always due his particular line, repeat, imo much less convincing in pure classic roles.instead .......superlative also while sleeps.one more dollar saved,
@pediatrapaola Yes - agree Ruzimatov was better in exotic roles. I saw him in Corsaire and Scheherezade and he completely brought the house down with his sinuous flexibility and charisma.
@Pearlaceous - The problem with having a famous coach is that they want to re-create their past with a new dancer. This is impossible and results can be disastrous. It happened with Osi's Juliet when she was coached by the greatest Ferri. this summer at ABT. She did many Ferri moments and they did not work. Only when she was herself and personalized Juliet did it work. Hallberg, in fact was a brilliant Albrecht with her at ABT with passion to spare. Here, a shadow of what I saw.
@TheBunduBallerina Exactlty - I am tired of all the Osipova deriders. She is a highly intelligent, expressive dancer who really thinks about each role she dances. Technically she is brilliant - undoubtedly the best female jumper in the world today - and she just looks as if she's floating here, such is her ease and lightness of movement. Her arms are lovely, too.
Natalia and david are very good dancers, for me they do not work well toguether, the best of this video is with no doubt Vasiliev, who is the only one in this video with expresion
David Hallberg is so wonderful! It's kind of weird to me that Hallberg and Osipova are dancing so much together. At ABT they are doing Romeo and Juliet together and Sleeping beauty, I really don't think they have that good of chemistry together and I don't like Osipova's interpretation of Giselle and other roles that she dances very much. But Hallberg is fantastic!
@9415908 - couldn't agree with you more, Osipova not only doesn't match up well with David, she doesn't even remotely approach him in terms of technical or artistic refinement. She's a one trick pony, and that trick is jumping. Her sickled feet, port de bras, and other aspects of her dancing bother me. So my eye just stays on the sublime Mr. Hallberg. I'll be seeing their R & J only because it's the only opportunity this season to see David in the role.
@kdub10009 You're so right, Hallberg is too good for her! but TOOOOOOOOOOOOO good for her :D He's like the encarnation of a Greek GOD, he's form another planet!
Yes I would also like to know what it is Dmitri Gudanov is saying about David Hallberg. Two of my favourite male dancers! I think Osipova and Hallberg work well together. Thanks for sharing, hookham!
@GymnasticDancer He says: DH is very well known in America. He takes part in projects such as The Kings of the Dance. It is very healthy (sic) that such asrtists perform here. He is still very young (sic) but nevertheless very mature, I would say. [Then I have problem understading, but I think Dima says DH has grasped how they dance brise in Russia, and has taken in this particular - Vasiliev - production well.] Continues: I think that is very good as an attitude. {I will now go to Part 2.]
It won' t be long time before Osipova belongs to the top 5 ballerinas in the world. I admire her mostly after Darcey Biussel and Sylivie Guillem.

I thought he was a taller dancer like Bolle or Mckie or Vogel but he seems smaller. Maybe just cause her jump is so great!

@StepsGurl he is probably 6 feet. Natalia is only 5'4 and Hallberg is clearly a good head taller than she is
