Now I'm a old broken peace of meat and I'm alone. That line is sad Cuz no matter how good you once used to be. His era was like late 70's, 80's and 90's and now he is passing through the hard Test of Life.... In the past he was this Pro Wrestler and a legend. And a Heavy Metal Head as well. But now life is tough and ugly. This reminds me so much of Rocky 6 the newest movie when he got really old and he was a boxing legend in the 70's and 80's and then life gets too fuckin ROUGH for him....
@Loyalty1269 HE DESERVED AN OSCAR FOR BARFLY, THE WRESTLER, THE POPE OF GRINWICH VILLAGE,MAYBE THERE I WILL GIVE IT TO ERIC ROBERTS, A PRAYER FOR THE DYING AND MANY MORE.

@kanedasrifle double team was a piece of shit film and artistically mickey hasn't been challenged at all in that movie because it was a ridiculously cheap script and movie. how can you compare the wrestler with double team? in the wrestler mickey did one hell of a job acting wise! well done mickey!!
Mickey Rourke is the best actor of his generation, at the same level of brando, and of course much better than idiots like Sean Penn doing a movie of gay, (which I fell asleep after 15 minutes), brad pitt, george clooney, and other Hollywood clowns.
if mickey in 90 had not been so rebellious, if instead of screwing his face had been dedicated to what he does best, acting, we would be talking about the best actor in history without a doubt.

@Cruiman24 I agree with you - Rourke is on a whole other level, but so often it's the super-talented genius artists who take their talent for granted because they don't have to work as hard at it as everyone else. I like Sean Penn, and was moved by Milk, but I honestly felt Rourke should have won the Oscar here. He completely transformed into this role and did his best acting performance ever. Politics indeed had a big part of that decision.
@0TheBestMan I've come to the conclusion that "The Wrestler" IS my favorite movie of all time, because no other has had as powerful an effect on me. Mickey Rourke's performance is for the ages.
Mickey Rourke, should of won the oscar for the Wrestler. The problem is Hollywood executives and other heavyweights have long memories. In the early 90s Rourke was a wild man, and told them all to get f*ck*d, and walked out on the industry. Now he is back, he didn't get the award because those crusty old assholes , still have not forgiven him.
Mickey Rourke deserved to win that Oscar, anyone could have pulled off what Sean Penn did in Milk. This is truly moving, he said behind the scenes he was thinking of a loved one whilst he spoke to her x
@zackhanscom yea right.......do it then.......and make millions like mickey......but you cant.........he has a whole crew wtching him and judging him............you couldnt do this if your life depended on it.
@alnuggy...yea you definetly know genius....i mean yea Mickey "GIVED" the best performance that year but it was more Sean penn's courage to take the role of harvey milk that won him the award.....you should "GIVED" it some thought and get back to me on that k genius!!! lol
@dallaire17 WTF does choosing a character have to do with his/her performance? The academy members are suckers for shit like that (i.e. holocaust, mental retardation, or in this case, the gay card).
@kamikrazi123 You're absolutely right. The Academy so much wants to appear relevant (because most of them are basically whores) that they'll swallow almost anything with a politically correct coating - its called Oscar bait.
@92ninersboy Rourke probably gave a better performance than Sean Penn, but I don't think Penn is less deserving. Have you guys even see "Milk"? Penn's character is not a flawness angel. To have someone like Horrorshow655321 says things like "a mediocre faggot" is just hateful. Even worse, 56 people liked that. It's ridiculous. Bullock's "The Blind Side" IS mediocre.
@kmpiano1 I agree there's no need to get into bigotry re gay rights - its dumb. Yeah, I saw "Milk" - I just was not that impressed (the documentary, 'The Life And TImes Of Harvey Milk was much better, I thought). Penn is a super fine actor, I just don't see him as an acting genius like I do Rourke. The problem with a genius is that they often go off the rails and stir up shit - thats what Rourke did and that, along with Prop 8, is probably why he didn't get the Oscar.
@92ninersboy Oh yeah, I definitely am not saying Penn is better than Rourke. I was very touched by his raw performance. But this is the Oscar! However, to be fair, Penn's been turning out good to great performances. If Rourke can do that consistently (with a good script and director), he will sure have an Oscar. Also, you also need to "want" the Oscar and do the publicity rounds (see Winslet and Bullock).
@kmpiano1 Penn has learned how to play the Hollywood game - Rourke has always been not just a master actor but a master at burning bridges. I highly doubt Rourke will not say or do something offense that will get a large ammount of people up in arms against him. Don't look for him to be consistent - Brando wasn't consistent either but what they both share is a special kind of poetic genius that can touch areas that less gifted actors, no matter how disciplined and skilled, can't reach.
@kmpiano1 I wanted to add - my favorite performance by Sean Penn is in "The Sweet Lowdown". He was exceptional in that. I have a long list of performances by Rourke (despite all the clinker and soft core movies) that resonate in me on the deepest level. He just has got "it". . . The GIft. I'm so grateful that he's getting another chance.
@92ninersboy Yeah, it's an underrated movie. Samantha Morton is also amazing in that (she's always amazing!) as well. I hope Rourke will get another role that will showcase his raw talent, then I think the Academy will have to reward him. But it's nice to have a conversation without resorting to ugly verbal attacks LOL.
@kmpiano1 I loved Samantha Morton in that part - a superb actress. Re Rourke - not to get defensive, but he is a very skilled actor - he doesn't just function on "raw" talent alone (though, he has that in the extreme). He studied at The Actors Studio for 4 years under Strassberg - Elia Kazan had said that Rourke's audition scene was the best he'd seen in 30 years. To me, though, the Oscars are basically a sick joke - and have been for many years.
@415BAY415 Thanks, I did not know that about Rourke! However, sometimes Oscars get it right....e.g. Daniel Day Lewis in his two performances.......sometimes is too strong...I should say seldomly....lol
Mickey Rourke is absolutly fantastic in this movie, He should of won the oscar for Best Actor!, I was shocked when Sean Penn won the oscar for Best Actor, Instead!. The Oscars doesn't know what brilliant acting is!. They gave the Oscar to the wrong person!. Mickey Rourke gived the best performance ever!. It was like for a second he's not acting anymore, that he's actually giving his heart and soul to god and he's riveting!
I love this film very much. I didn't know that they deal about every fight move before the presentation. Haha Anyway Mickey Rourke showed brilliant acting and deserved the Oscar. Sean Penn was much worse in 'Milk' but I guess academics are obsessed with "gay rights" too much. Marisa Tomei was stunning too
Not taking anything away from Penn in milk because he was really fantastic in that film but, Mickey really was robbed of an oscar with this role I feel. The Raw emotion he shows throughout this film far surpasses anything in "milk". The depth of the character Rourke portrays really draws you in and involves you alot more than Penns performance in "milk"
@WimpyV3 Yeah, its a shame that "Milk" came out the same year as "The Wrestler" because Rourke's performance wasn't just the best of the year, but one of the best ever in film history - on the same level of Brando's greatest. Penn was put in a rough spot - I'm sure he felt uncomfortable, especially since Rourke is one of his acting idols.
@xxsandmanxx02 Rourke has done some fantastic work over the years (check out "Angel Heart"). He looks like a whole different person but his incredible talent hasn't diminished. I just saw "The Expendables" and even in that he got to do one scene, a monologue, that is simply amazing - it knocked my socks off.
@92ninersboy yeah man! I just saw expendables and the movie is utter shit and is what it is (terrible but fun to watch), anyway... rourke's minimal screen time was good and his monologue that he apparently co-wrote was fantastic. The man can act. In that one monologue he taught that entire cast how to own the screen...without explosions.
Such a heartfelt gutwrenching performance. Randy is so tortured and he enables us to feel his pain right down to the bone. What a stunning, soulful emotional turn by Rourke. So raw. It's worth 3 oscars.
I could not agree more. Penn is such an over actor. I hope Mickey has another chance at a brilliant roll. I was mesmerized from beginning to end. Cried in so many places. Touches you.
I think Evan Rachel Wood said for more with her eyes than Mickey Rourke actually said in this scene. He's a wonderful actor, but Evan is just stupendous.
I used to watch wrestling a whole lot with my dad as a kid. man i've waited so long for a movie like this to be made, Mickey Rourke is an Oscar-caliber actor, and he got to work with a brilliant scifi director that is Darren Aronofsky as well as two talented actresses. what a wonderful film all around it wins my heart!
I hate wrestling and wasn't going to watch this movie but I'm glad I did.Mickey is a great actor and should've won something for his performance but he knows the award shows are full of crap.Marrisa Tomei can dance for me anytime! This movie is so true to life and this scene is a real heart jerker.Nice to see a really good movie for a change.
I watched this last night and thought it was amazing. I've read people not liking the ending so much, but I felt it summed up the whole movie very well and caused a tear in the last few minutes.
The whole movie is one amazing scene after another. He should be considered one of our greatest actors. But maybe he seems a little too nuts in his personal life.
@92ninersboy Those are the kinda movies I love. They do more for me than any special effect could. In fact the more realistic and the less it makes me aware about the fact I'm watching a movie..the better. So The Wrestler is like my #3, 4 or 5 of all time (having trouble putting them in order)
hey he is great actor.......this movies teared my hurt...+ he was so awsome on spun ! when he played the cock ! is mickey suicidal or something..? in both movies he kills himself..
I think at one point he was gonna murder someone for raping his ex wife. She left him, hollywood the crooked snakes they are turned their back on him, so he wrote out a suicide note as the story goes. Thank god he didn't go through with any of that, it would of just been a waste of talent. I hope he's put on more movies.
@Horrorshow655321 How dare you. The man that Sean Penn played, Harvey Milk, was an incredible man. I owe him my freedom to live a happy life and to love freely, as do thousands of other people. Who do you think you are??
@TheBohemianTenor Hey, I was in San Francisco when Harvey Milk was alive and doing his thing. He had a lot of courage and helped the cause for millions. But when it comes to the oscar, Mickey Rourke was simply robbed - his performance will go down as a classic that the academy passed over because they were focusing on politics and not art.
@92ninersboy True; it's unbelievable to think that Mr. Aronofsky took a done-to-death format (a man that has nothing who goes out in a blaze of glory) and gives it a unique touch...It just seems that the Academy only see's a movie about wrestling, and think it's just fake; it's a master-stroke that such art could be shown in a movie mainly about pro wrestling.
@92ninersboy I'm a queer woman and I agree with you. But fuck the academy anyway, Rourke knows what he accomplished and so does everyone who saw the film.
@sweeterthananything I love your sentiment, "fuck the academy". Very well put. Yeah, if you see the film you get why people are upset about Mickey Rourke not getting the oscar. The way I see it, Rourke was worthy of the Oscar but the Oscar wasn't worthy of Rourke, and the academy proved just how political they are. I don't blame Sean Penn - I could tell he was uncomfortable with the academy's actions, too. He handled the situation with grace.
@92ninersboy There's even an interesting connection between Penn & Rourke - Mickey played Charles Bukowski (or his literary alter-ego) in Barfly, Penn was friends with Bukowski and dedicated The Crossing Guard to him. It's typical of youtube comments to see so much of the discussion come down to homophobic chest-beating vs. "you don't think Milk was best ever therefore you are a homophobe." Mickey knew he burned too many bridges in Hollywood, and this wasn't a Hollywood film anyway.
@sweeterthananything Exactly. "The Wrestler" was the anti-Hollywood movie in many ways. I actually read an old article on Rourke from when he was filming "The Pope of Greenwich Village" and the writer describes how a young Sean Penn was following Rourke around just so he could watch him film scenes. Penn also hired Rourke for his great cameo in "The Pledge", which Penn directed. Penn has tried to help Mickey because he admire's his acting so much.
@92ninersboy Look again, my friend. Mickey's performance was magic, but he did not have to travel far outside of his reality to play that part. Mr. Penn, on the other hand hand to be a smiling homosexual, which for him was a stretch. And he fuckin' nailed it. He nailed that Harvey Milk character! Thats why he got the Oscar, instead of Rourke. He had to go a long way from home to hit it, and he did. Rourke hit his too, but close to home.
@Pleaver I'm not sure what's so incredible about being able to, as you say, play a "smiling homosexual". What about all the gay actors who played straight characters over the years? Penn won because of Prop 8 and political reasons and Rourke's blackened status in Hollywood. Acting isn't about being Rich Little - it goes deeper thatn that. Mickey Rourke accomplished something very special.
@Pleaver Rourke's character hit very close to home for him, yes, but the way in which it hit home is what made it all the more emotionally demanding of a role for him to act!
@Horrorshow655321 If everybody liked it, then it wouldn't be that special. The more popular, the less good. "I'm an old broken down piece of meat, and i'm alone". Thanks Mickey.
I may get negative responses, but who doesn't? The Ram is really a man of our generation. Troubled, conflicted, from no where, going no where, caught in glimpses of success. He's a poem in motion. It only makes perfect sense that Mickey Rourke played him.
If you check out the film, very little music is used - but, other than the metal tunes playing before the matches or in the bar (which are part of the reality of the scene's environment) its just a little picking guitar, which just seems to underline Ram's isolation. The actor's are left to act without muzak manipulating the audience. Since Rourke is pouring out his soul, no more is needed and would only diminish the "reality". Evan Rachel and Marissa Tomei rise to meet Mickey at his level.
in an interview rachel wood said that this part were she cries was not acting, that she actually cried because she actually had problems with her dad like in the movie so she said she imagined mickie as her dad talking to her
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm no actor but if I was I would never do that. It's not the right reaction because Mickey isn't her real father, her father is her real father. I'd make myself believe I am actually Stephanie and Randy is my father, because that would get a genuine correct reaction
That's the way it is in Real life everything goes away after the decades and the years that go by.....

Yes, Rourke's Oscar is robbed, but please don't drag "gay rights" into the discussion. Reason
1) Penn is a much respected actor in the Academy, and Rourke is an jerk in real life. That influences the members' decision.
2) Penn plays a gay character (the Academy loves it when straight actors take a chance, whatever that means)
3) Penn's performance is actually good and not just all hype.

@alnuggy...yea you definetly know genius....i mean yea Mickey "GIVED" the best performance that year but it was more Sean penn's courage to take the role of harvey milk that won him the award.....you should "GIVED" it some thought and get back to me on that k genius!!! lol
dallaire17 1 year ago
@dallaire17 WTF does choosing a character have to do with his/her performance? The academy members are suckers for shit like that (i.e. holocaust, mental retardation, or in this case, the gay card).
kamikrazi123 1 year ago
@kamikrazi123 You're absolutely right. The Academy so much wants to appear relevant (because most of them are basically whores) that they'll swallow almost anything with a politically correct coating - its called Oscar bait.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@92ninersboy Rourke probably gave a better performance than Sean Penn, but I don't think Penn is less deserving. Have you guys even see "Milk"? Penn's character is not a flawness angel. To have someone like Horrorshow655321 says things like "a mediocre faggot" is just hateful. Even worse, 56 people liked that. It's ridiculous. Bullock's "The Blind Side" IS mediocre.
kmpiano1 1 year ago
@kmpiano1 I agree there's no need to get into bigotry re gay rights - its dumb. Yeah, I saw "Milk" - I just was not that impressed (the documentary, 'The Life And TImes Of Harvey Milk was much better, I thought). Penn is a super fine actor, I just don't see him as an acting genius like I do Rourke. The problem with a genius is that they often go off the rails and stir up shit - thats what Rourke did and that, along with Prop 8, is probably why he didn't get the Oscar.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@92ninersboy Oh yeah, I definitely am not saying Penn is better than Rourke. I was very touched by his raw performance. But this is the Oscar! However, to be fair, Penn's been turning out good to great performances. If Rourke can do that consistently (with a good script and director), he will sure have an Oscar. Also, you also need to "want" the Oscar and do the publicity rounds (see Winslet and Bullock).
kmpiano1 1 year ago
@kmpiano1 Penn has learned how to play the Hollywood game - Rourke has always been not just a master actor but a master at burning bridges. I highly doubt Rourke will not say or do something offense that will get a large ammount of people up in arms against him. Don't look for him to be consistent - Brando wasn't consistent either but what they both share is a special kind of poetic genius that can touch areas that less gifted actors, no matter how disciplined and skilled, can't reach.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@kmpiano1 I wanted to add - my favorite performance by Sean Penn is in "The Sweet Lowdown". He was exceptional in that. I have a long list of performances by Rourke (despite all the clinker and soft core movies) that resonate in me on the deepest level. He just has got "it". . . The GIft. I'm so grateful that he's getting another chance.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@92ninersboy Yeah, it's an underrated movie. Samantha Morton is also amazing in that (she's always amazing!) as well. I hope Rourke will get another role that will showcase his raw talent, then I think the Academy will have to reward him. But it's nice to have a conversation without resorting to ugly verbal attacks LOL.
kmpiano1 1 year ago
@kmpiano1 I loved Samantha Morton in that part - a superb actress. Re Rourke - not to get defensive, but he is a very skilled actor - he doesn't just function on "raw" talent alone (though, he has that in the extreme). He studied at The Actors Studio for 4 years under Strassberg - Elia Kazan had said that Rourke's audition scene was the best he'd seen in 30 years. To me, though, the Oscars are basically a sick joke - and have been for many years.
415BAY415 1 year ago

Mickey Rourke is a god among insects.
And this scene always makes me cry.
1Dreamking 1 year ago
Not taking anything away from Penn in milk because he was really fantastic in that film but, Mickey really was robbed of an oscar with this role I feel. The Raw emotion he shows throughout this film far surpasses anything in "milk". The depth of the character Rourke portrays really draws you in and involves you alot more than Penns performance in "milk"
WimpyV3 1 year ago
@WimpyV3 Yeah, its a shame that "Milk" came out the same year as "The Wrestler" because Rourke's performance wasn't just the best of the year, but one of the best ever in film history - on the same level of Brando's greatest. Penn was put in a rough spot - I'm sure he felt uncomfortable, especially since Rourke is one of his acting idols.

xxsandmanxx02 1 year ago
@xxsandmanxx02 Rourke has done some fantastic work over the years (check out "Angel Heart"). He looks like a whole different person but his incredible talent hasn't diminished. I just saw "The Expendables" and even in that he got to do one scene, a monologue, that is simply amazing - it knocked my socks off.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@92ninersboy yeah man! I just saw expendables and the movie is utter shit and is what it is (terrible but fun to watch), anyway... rourke's minimal screen time was good and his monologue that he apparently co-wrote was fantastic. The man can act. In that one monologue he taught that entire cast how to own the screen...without explosions.

Such a heartfelt gutwrenching performance. Randy is so tortured and he enables us to feel his pain right down to the bone. What a stunning, soulful emotional turn by Rourke. So raw. It's worth 3 oscars.

@TheBohemianTenor Big deal, let's see Sean give a speech like in the final match. Not gonna happen and not better than this movie. Mickey was ROBBED!
theshooter2000 1 year ago
@TheBohemianTenor Hey, I was in San Francisco when Harvey Milk was alive and doing his thing. He had a lot of courage and helped the cause for millions. But when it comes to the oscar, Mickey Rourke was simply robbed - his performance will go down as a classic that the academy passed over because they were focusing on politics and not art.
92ninersboy 1 year ago 26
@92ninersboy agreed.
Trashfished 1 year ago
@92ninersboy True; it's unbelievable to think that Mr. Aronofsky took a done-to-death format (a man that has nothing who goes out in a blaze of glory) and gives it a unique touch...It just seems that the Academy only see's a movie about wrestling, and think it's just fake; it's a master-stroke that such art could be shown in a movie mainly about pro wrestling.
dommer117 1 year ago
@92ninersboy I'm a queer woman and I agree with you. But fuck the academy anyway, Rourke knows what he accomplished and so does everyone who saw the film.
sweeterthananything 1 year ago
@sweeterthananything I love your sentiment, "fuck the academy". Very well put. Yeah, if you see the film you get why people are upset about Mickey Rourke not getting the oscar. The way I see it, Rourke was worthy of the Oscar but the Oscar wasn't worthy of Rourke, and the academy proved just how political they are. I don't blame Sean Penn - I could tell he was uncomfortable with the academy's actions, too. He handled the situation with grace.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@92ninersboy There's even an interesting connection between Penn & Rourke - Mickey played Charles Bukowski (or his literary alter-ego) in Barfly, Penn was friends with Bukowski and dedicated The Crossing Guard to him. It's typical of youtube comments to see so much of the discussion come down to homophobic chest-beating vs. "you don't think Milk was best ever therefore you are a homophobe." Mickey knew he burned too many bridges in Hollywood, and this wasn't a Hollywood film anyway.
sweeterthananything 1 year ago
@sweeterthananything Exactly. "The Wrestler" was the anti-Hollywood movie in many ways. I actually read an old article on Rourke from when he was filming "The Pope of Greenwich Village" and the writer describes how a young Sean Penn was following Rourke around just so he could watch him film scenes. Penn also hired Rourke for his great cameo in "The Pledge", which Penn directed. Penn has tried to help Mickey because he admire's his acting so much.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@92ninersboy Look again, my friend. Mickey's performance was magic, but he did not have to travel far outside of his reality to play that part. Mr. Penn, on the other hand hand to be a smiling homosexual, which for him was a stretch. And he fuckin' nailed it. He nailed that Harvey Milk character! Thats why he got the Oscar, instead of Rourke. He had to go a long way from home to hit it, and he did. Rourke hit his too, but close to home.
Pleaver 1 year ago
@Pleaver I'm not sure what's so incredible about being able to, as you say, play a "smiling homosexual". What about all the gay actors who played straight characters over the years? Penn won because of Prop 8 and political reasons and Rourke's blackened status in Hollywood. Acting isn't about being Rich Little - it goes deeper thatn that. Mickey Rourke accomplished something very special.
92ninersboy 1 year ago
@Pleaver Rourke's character hit very close to home for him, yes, but the way in which it hit home is what made it all the more emotionally demanding of a role for him to act!

I may get negative responses, but who doesn't? The Ram is really a man of our generation. Troubled, conflicted, from no where, going no where, caught in glimpses of success. He's a poem in motion. It only makes perfect sense that Mickey Rourke played him.

louielawson 2 years ago
If you check out the film, very little music is used - but, other than the metal tunes playing before the matches or in the bar (which are part of the reality of the scene's environment) its just a little picking guitar, which just seems to underline Ram's isolation. The actor's are left to act without muzak manipulating the audience. Since Rourke is pouring out his soul, no more is needed and would only diminish the "reality". Evan Rachel and Marissa Tomei rise to meet Mickey at his level.
