  • @shasantv Brilliant video thanks very much for taking the time to post it

  • @mmaylin you're welcome

  • Thank you, very helpful.

  • @Peterplayingguitar you're welcome

  • Hi, Shirleen here. I followed the instructions as you mentioned. Everything goes smoothly but I couldn't change the "Bit Rate" under Audacity Preference although i'd donwnloaded n installed the LAME MP3 encoder. What happen? What should I do?

  • @teoshirleen Hi Shirleen, You need to tell audacity where the LAME dll file is. Watch my video again it says where you can find this dll file on your PC.

  • You are a very smart man, have a good day/night. :-)

  • I got it, sweet, thanks for the insta-fast response. Problem was my computer has a line in at the front and the back and I needed to tell it to take from the back (don't know why it didn't default to that).

Hopefully can get the rest done now.

    Thanks!

  • @wackycakes awesome.. you are smart man... :)

  • Hi Shasantv, thank you your video.

I have followed your instructions (I previously downloaded the newer audacity version but couldn't find any tutorials). I have the correct cable in the correct places and I have installed everything and followed each step however when I record, it is blank, it doesn't pick anything up. I have checked the master volume to make sure line in isn't muted, it isn't. I have no idea why it won't work...

    Can you advise?

  • @wackycakes you are missing some step... check out my other vidoes on my channel about audacity

  • how old is the radio, device thingy? is it some 20+ years 5+ years?

  • @karsten69 that cable is called dubbing cable. it is not a new thing. musicians are using it for many years.

  • @shasantv no I meant if there was a limit to how old any device could be for it to connect to the computer. I didn't ask about the cable.

the reason I asked is because I couldn't get it to work, have tried all guides and tutorials and nothing seemed to help. the missing step was change what microphone you use by default, (not in audacity but in audio devices) and it worked. -_-' if I had known that I would have already finished my project of converting 100 Casettes with music older than I am.

  • @karsten69 you can use this method as long as your device have headphone jack or speaker-out which could connect via this cable to your pc

  • @ciccuzz you're welcome

  • @ciccuzz no problem bro..

  • @ciccuzz pretty good. try it yourself

  • aUDACITY softare leaves spy crawlers such as 'shoppers reports' on your pc.

Is there any free software that doesn't spy?

  • @outraged4U sorry, i don't know any other useful free application like audacity

  • @shasantv Thank you anyway. I

ncidentally, were you aware that 'Shoppers Reports' add something to your hard drive when you down load audacity? I wonder if it affects computer performance too.

  • worked for me too, thanx bro

  • @dovlezik You're Welcome

  • Hi shasantv,

(PART 2 of 2... But it doesn't then open another box for me to change the bit rate. I have made a successful recording and has recorded at a bit rate of 128. I have followed each and every step, but the fact I have the beta version, means that the preference options are slightly different. Does it appear that I have done things correctly? Thanks for your help! :) PS Why LINE IN on tape machine rather than LINE OUT??

  • @joesophie90 audacity beta software is not stable or final version so it is difficult to say what will work or not on final version. I think you should edit stuff on stable version of audacity because things just works on it.

  • @shasantv

Would Audacity 1.2.6 work with Windows 7, though? When I went to download Audacity, it stated that Windows 7 was not compatible with Audacity 1.2.6 for Windows® 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista.

    Thanks for responding! :)

  • @joesophie90 i have installed it on windows 7 32-bit & 64-bit without any issue. even if it is giving you error then you can let windows 7 install audacity with compatibility option ON. You know, you can install apps created for vista and XP on windows 7.

  • Hi shasantv,

(PART 1 of 2)...I have Windows 7, & have had to download the beta version of audacity, which has different preference options. In "find library" on the non beta version, the only preference option in the beta version I could find to "find library" for locating the lame.enc. dll, was at preference option "libraries". I clicked on the MP3 Library LOCATE tab in there, which opened another box, which stated where the location of lame_enc.dll was and ok'd it.

  • Can I use a laptop to record or does it have to be a PC

  • @paredezm22 yes, this will work on laptops too

  • thank you. you've been very helpful. :)

  • "special cable" hahahaha

  • Coming from a headphone jack, you should be going into a LINE in jack, not a MIC jack. A MIC jack is way to sensitive for a headphone powered output. You'll either get lots of noise, or huge distortion. Plug it into the LINE IN jack and put the player volume at about 3/4.

  • @CraigTube Thanks for the tip.

  • @shasantv Thank you for posting this video. The instructions are simple for me to follow. I'm a slow learner so I need the least complicated instructions. I followed your video and the tip that CraigTube gave you and it works like a charm.

  • @2326038 glad it helped you

  • Hi, there, Question please! when you plug the audio cable to the microphone port on the computer, then the computer asks, if this is a microphone or device is line in, and ,,, which do you pick????

    thankyou

  • @naturesaved select microphone

  • I've connected that plug from my cassette player's earphone jack to my laptop's microphone jack, but when I record I get really weird sounds coming through; like an echo-y underwater sound with what I am recording really faint in the background. What am I doing wrong? I've used all the same settings as shown in the video. Is it the cable? A setting I've missed? Thanks in advance.

  • @Christos179 maybe your connections are loose or your mic boost is too high

  • @shasantv My connections seem to be fine. I'm using Vista, and I reduced the mic boost in 'Microphone Properties', but under the 'Enhancements' tab I disabled all sound effects, but now I get the recording with a large amount of static buzzing noise. If i turn Noise Suppression on and keep the other settings off though, I'm back to the weird underwater noise. I can't seem to get a clear recording.

  • @shasantv I forgot to mention that just turning down mic boost didn't fix the problem.

  • @Christos179

Do you have another stereo device that you can try it on?

I'm trying to think and research what might cause this problem.

Can you share specs of your PC?

specially your sound cards make and model...

  • @shasantv This is the only device I have that plays cassettes. I tried recording on a different laptop and I have the same problem, so it might be the device or the cable I'm using. Would a 3.5mm stereo to 2 RCA cable work better instead of running it through the earphone jack of the device?

Specs: Asus Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz, 4gb RAM, Vista Ultimate 32-bit

Not sure of full sound card specs but it's Realtek High Definition Audio.

  • @Christos179 I see no harm in trying out Stereo to RCA cable. Try it out. BTW, I have same sound card. As a precaution try not to use any other special app or device while doing this. Just wondering,,, do you have by any chance stereo mix turned ON?

  • @shasantv I went and bought an 2 RCA cable and it works a lot better. I get a faint humming/buzzing noise in the background with a few microphone setting adjustments, but it's good enough for what I want. I'm not after top quality recordings as it's only speech, but I at least wanted something that was audible.

Stereo mix has been disabled the whole time. I've tried all sorts of different things, turning it on/off, etc. Anyway, thanks for your advice.

  • great video , thanks sooo much. got everything to work , v easy..!! 1 question pls..!!

    youtube .com/watch?v=xxlyEBAsOiI

  • I tried using WavePad!

  • @jason24568 I think it should work the same way it does for audacity but sadly wavepad is not a free app. how was your experience with wavepad?

  • @shasantv Yes, it works well. It is free version (you can upgrade to Master's Edition.

  • @jason24568 Thanks for the info. I'm happy with Audacity - It works fine for my needs but will give wavepad a try soon.

  • It works, thank you

  • @Qualcuno1 You're welcome

  • thank you for uploading this. I have got some old christian music tapes that I want to save so this is very helpful. You are much appreciated.

  • @scutter4christ - You're welcome

  • shasantv, I want to thank you for that great revelation and for taking time to explain the procedure step by step. Besides being intelligent you are quite a gentleman. Now my old cassettes take a new life thanks to technology and to you. Thanks a lot.

  • Hey, this is a very helpful video but I have a question. I want to make a cassette recording I have as background for a video. How do I transfer that to Windows Movie Maker?

  • @redlinechavez whats video format?

  • @shasantv oh hey, sorry about that, forget about my previous question I figured it out. Sorry. have a good day.

  • good explanation. this is my 1st time using Adacity to record from cassettes. I wll let u know my results. thanks.

  • hey i am very interest it on record cassette tapes to my ipod or make a cd audio please... if u can make a totorial to how to record cassettes to a cd will be wonderfull ...thanks anyway .....

  • @gama121 You can burn these mp3s you make with audacity as cds. You can do this with Windows Media Player or with many other cd burning tools on internet. If you want me to show you how to burn CDs then let me know.

  • I use the AUX on my stereo set amplifier and I connect it to the line-in on my pc.. Better result.

Actually you can connect the AUX or the tape in to the headphone outlet on your pc and get better sound from your pc than most pc-speakers offer.

  • i have the cable and have plugged it into both my tape recorder and also my computer but when i hit record nothing shows up on audacity. do you know what has gone wrong??

  • @jacko123456789012345 you have to connect dubbing cable to mic jack on your pc and to headphone jack on your stereo, make sure your audio cassette is playing while you are trying to record

  • Excellent! Couldn't have done without this video. Thanks.

  • THANK YOU! I did EXACTLY as you said and now I have great .mp3 files from VERY important cassettes -- including one of eulogies from my Mom's funeral. Now, I do not have to worry about the cassette's quality over time.

  • Thank you very much!!! Very good your video!!! I can do it the conversion!!!! thanks!!

    from Perú

  • thank you for posting this! helped me out so much.

  • hi shahantv,

thanx for the tip - i just got my usb audio adapter, and it's working well - you've saved me a trip to pc world - i, and my wallet, are very grateful...

  • Oh, oops. I gotcha! Do you know how to connect video as well like a Yellow RCA to the computer on the cheap?

  • check out dazzle dvd recorder

  • How come your radio is only outputting sound on the left channel when you record it? Did the stereo cable not work properly to get both right and left channels?

  • its on mono

  • sorry, yes i should have said - i'm running vista - audacity has worked ok for me for some months now - capturing magnetic tape and exporting to mp3 - but now my laptop MIC socket is faulty - and it definitely IS the MIC socket - i've tested the lead and the boombox headphone socket - both fine - the point is, i'm looking for a quick, cheap solution to the problem - if i take the laptop to the store, it's not the parts, it's the labour that'll cost me - and i'm not handy enough to do it myself..

  • due to youtube comment policy i cannot post links here so you have to search this yourself.

    >>go to google shopping site and search this

    "USB 2.0 to Audio Adapter"

I think this will solve your problem.

Let me know if this works out for you

  • hi shasantv - i have a question - i've been using audacity for some time to as you describe - jack to jack in the MIC socket on my pc - but now the MIC socket is faulty - lots of noise in the signal - so, can i use the USB socket as a LINE IN instead? would i neeed a driver to get the pc to recognize the USB as a LINE IN ?

    any ideas please ?

  • What OS you are running?

  • thank you my friend!!!!!!!!!

  • Dude, thanks so much! You may have saved some classic 80's hits from dying in their cassette shells! Groovy.

  • I had all this item available but for some reason never wanted to try it. I thought I might 'damage' something. But as I can see now it's all good!

    Thanks

  • You made this sound so much easier then some of the other videos on here! Thanks - I'm going to try this soon!

  • Shasantv no one, but a million thanks from the bottom of my heart. God Bless you.

    Thanks

  • Great! Thanks so much!

  • your welcome
