  • I took the day off work in about 1984 ish, to go and see this, my mate came with me and brought his mum! I was so proud and pleased. She is my favourite Carmen, at the time I remember reading, she did not have the best voice to take the part, but she portrayed the cigar rolling up her thigh as 'the kind of woman' Carmen was! She is gorgwous and I love her voice, eyes and the way she plays this! Than you for posting this! In your debt forever!

  • il megliore José!!

  • Ridiculous movie.

  • I love this.So sad!

  • I do have the most beautiful name...

    Gotta love Carmen :D

  • This is in French. I have loved this operasince I was a young lad. When I was 17 i took the day off work to see this version, I remember reading Ms Migenes was not the best singer to take this role, but she had the 'Carmen' feel about her. I remember her rolling a cigar on her thigh with the most sexiest smile on her face, and the guy who directed, said Carmen wasn't a singer, she was just like her. Might be a load of shite. But she is my Carmen - I love her, x

  • Intensa a interpretação de Pácido Domingo!

  • Is this in spanish or french i really can't tell with them singing!!?

  • @Welcometomylife2441 It's set in Spain but they are singing in French since Georges Bizet is French, so they are singing in French as thats the language he understands. I am 13 and we are watching this in music so I know a bit about it, and we're only up to act 2;)

  • @myblackrose1998 haha thanks!! =)

  • @Welcometomylife2441 Welcome=)

  • What I say next, I say still loving these types of movies, incIuding this one.

I wish they would have had them sing live during these films, rather than pre-record. I guess they wanted lovely faces. But for me, having them really sing, and seeing the energy they put into the line is an integral part of the acting, without it, something isn't as human, real, and dramatic.

  • actually he was in his 40s when this was made. Julia is a soprano. Many sopranos have sung Carmen, some with higher options others as written. Mezzo and contraltos sing it too

  • Ma Carmen adorée!!!!! ='(

  • Has anyone seen the movie Carmen with Paz Vega? It's not a musical but an actual movie version. Is very very good.

  • amazing.

thank you so much for uploading this!

  • TL, DR version of the song: "Sorry buddy, you just got friend zoooned!" *Toreador begins to play*

  • This opera was consider scary, because it emphasis on realism, 'this can happen to you if you repeat the plot and wind up in trouble.'

  • Trop trste!

  • Carmen infame.

  • Sounds too high in pitch....

  • This brings out my tears. Unrequited love.

  • Great acting from both. This scene seems to be especially challenging for the soprano acting wise, they often show such contempt for Don, which is odd.

  • nice one . Anyone can tell me what's that music name between 8:30 - 8:55 please ! thanks.

  • young domingo

Puro oro.

  • @AlberichNibelungo demasiado fue demasiadoooooo !

  • If she were a true mezzo-soprano, then I have the voice of a baritone then.

  • @norisv Is she a soprano?

  • Yep, she is a soprano.

  • @Elisabetta611 She's actually a mezzo-soprano. I just saw this opera at my local concert hall and really enjoyed the performance. Thanks for sharing this.

  • @Ancestratos Carmen is Mezzosoprano !!!!

  • @rvoralek I know! That's why I asked if she (Julia Migenes Johnson) was a soprano, because I noticed her voice is higher than a mezzosoprano's.

  • @Ancestratos Yes she is a soprano :)

  • @norisv you're right: She IS a soprano

  • The voice of Placido Domingo was so young here!

  • Wow. He's amazing!

  • Oddio... Minuto 8:09 ....

  • I LOVE this.

  • la la la .

  • Hey hey hey thank u so much 4 this spectacular show...where can i find this full movie ? :( plz tell me as soon as u get my comment :)

  • @crony13 : You can get this film on Amazon. Very inexpensive if ordering a VHS from private seller. DVD cost is way too high. Good luck!

  • Io ADORO quest'uomo!!!! *___*

  • Me encanta, qué pasión.

    Oleeee!!!

  • L'une de mes versions préférées.

  • Is it just me, or is he quite sharp on the line, "Vous pouvez m'arreter"? It's at about 8:57.

  • It would sound Lovely in Itallian

  • There are recordings of it in Italian. I.E. with Franco Corelli.

  • I can still wish.

  • @Elisabetta611

Corelli himself always said he felt more comfortable singing it in Italian. His French was quite awful, actually (but overall his Don José is incomparable)

  • @nestersg It would sound even better in Castilian Spanish. ; )

  • @nestersg WHY ???? It was written in French...

  • @breton2

Not a real fan of the sond of French.

  • @breton2

Not a real fan of the sond of French. And it's set in Spain.

  • @nestersg Yes, but it still remains French music, in style and in spirit... The composer wrote the music on French verses, therefore a translation, whether it is in Italian or Spanish, wouldn't respect the prosody...

  • @nestersg Yes, but it still remains French music, in style and in spirit... The composer wrote the music on French verses, therefore a translation, whether it is in Italian or Spanish, wouldn't respect the prosody... It would be the same as translating Aida by Verdi in French or Arabic... It wouldn't make sense...

  • @breton2 Hearing Aida in the original Egyptian would actually be quite interesting, n'est-ce pas?

  • Excellent film of the opera. My only complaint is with the audio in the uploads of the movie. The sound seems to have been tampered with and appears to be "higher" in pitch and lighter-sounding. The singers don't sing the way I remember them singing when I first saw this movie. Also I think they sped up the video to go faster than usual in time.

  • I ripped it directly from the DVD, didn't change a thing.

  • @Elisabetta611 It's definitely a half ton higher then usual. Something seems wrong with the DVD then. Can't imagine that thy did everything a half tone higher. Especially because they sound deferent then usual.

  • The audio, if altered, makes the scene more dramatic.

  • @MastersoftheOpera That could probably be because the DVD is a PAL release made in Europe, where the audio is somewhat sped up. An R1 official DVD release has the more "natural" pitch.

  • @MastersoftheOpera I noticed that too.

Domingo's voice sounds more or less the same, but Migenes sounds much more shrill than she does in the other scenes in this movie

  • @temperanceluv81 she sounds a soprano, and she was a mezzo right?

  • If youonly speak english, I think you would like Carmen with Dorothy Dandridge, and Harry Belafonte. It's really good and they sing in english they have have the whole movie, on you tube and its a really good copy

  • I actually prefer Carmen in its original French. It sounds weird and Broadway-ish in English. I did love that movie though. Dorothy Dandrige was excellent but she did not sing. They used the voice of Marilyn Horne, an American mezzo soprano

  • I understand what you mean, And the translation is not good ( at east with the first song ). I just think it's kinda hard to truly understand whats going on if you are not fluent in French. But I do think they did a good job matching Dorothy and Harry with the other singers voice because it looked like they could actually be singing.

  • I love her expression at 4:23 -- it was like this man loves me???? It takes her by surprise his devotion to her.....I think she felt she couldn't be loved in a way?

    Interesting and conflicting concepts here

  • soo...sad....a masterpeice opera

  • Mercedes Pastor Fa 28-6-2009

  • I pretty sure this is French

  • it's french :)

  • which language ?????????????? please help

  • It is a Spanish opera, but it was composed by a French composer, and is sung completely in French. That is why I have such trouble singing along with it xD

  • This makes me cry! It's so sad!

  • Me too.

  • Whenever I do this particular finale, I will dedicate it to my ex.

  • This is the BEST scene of any opera!!! Both of them are perfect in their roles.

  • I love this Opera :3

3:21- 3:41 In particular. Their voices blend beautifully!!!

  • nice movie, i was moved away into the tears!

    thanx for posting :P

  • Mi amigo Trianapuenta, no hablo espanol pero I understand enough to appreciate your comments. I love Seville as weil as the capitol and also the coasts of Spain, see you in San Sebastian this summer. El hombre viejo. D.Swift

  • meravigliosooo

  • Entre nous tout est fini ! Et toc ! :-)

    J'adore 3:05 !!

  • What's the point of telling you're self not to cry when you do??

  • I'm crying right now

  • I remember seeing this in TV and being astonished by the actual great actor-skills of Migenes, Domingo and Raimondi. And Migenes is really SEXY there! A Carmen who really could make men lose their wit. Great performance altoghether, and a wonderful movie - fight between Escamillo and Jose is memorable!

  • this moved me 2 tears! im sooo sad lol

  • For me, the greatest Don Jose will always be Jose Carreras. He sings from the lyrical heart ripping truly emotionally distraught soul as Don Jose - unequalled even by the magnificent Domingo.

  • I've always thought that Don Jose is quite a fool... too bad much of the wonderful operatic music is written for foolish heroes. But "La Fleur que tu m'avais jetée" is truly a gem and none sings is as beautifully as Carreras!

  • Andele, por buzcona...

  • es maravilloso

  • this opera is so sad

  • any1 can tell me why she was so mutch seeking for death? is there a kind of explination inside or really nothing?

i think the real tragedy is for that poor guy blinded by his love for a night butterfly and unable to realize it...a pity

  • wats the the name song of this last song?

  • Does this scene have a name?

If so,can somone tell me what it is?

    Anyways,this was amazing,I love carmen.

    Cest magnifique!

  • I've always liked Carmen. It's one of the few operas where the baritone gets the girl.

Why yes, I am a baritone. Why do you ask?

  • Baritones ROCK

  • .......Though Domingo in his Tenor showed the deapth of love he had for Carmen and his rage over loosing her to Escamillio. This was a great film.

  • Is that French? Why does it sounds like Italian so much!! I'm not sure, can someone tell?

  • french

  • It's French but they're rolling their 'R's opera-style so it sounds Italian.

  • because are romance linguish

  • Amazing performances!!!

  • Wow I can't believe I have never seen this film... I need to get my hands on it ASAP!

  • i mean really. does it get any better? spectacular performance, amazing chemistry.

  • What is a chance of having me find it on video? I am very interested in learning more about this....

  • C'est putain tres bien...

  • Best scene of the opera

    incredible performances

and the directing was then one of the top

at his age to transfer an opera for tv edition

    was unthinkable yet

Rosi tried and made greatest Carmen for those who didn't used to opera

  • This is my first listening to Carmen so please have this on your mind, at least I do.

  • The chorus is very often too loud and at the moment I feel like there is no musical coherence and balance in the opera. maybe the word chaos is probably too strong. I'm saying this only because the day before I have listened to La Boheme and what a work that is, every musical point is just adorable, from the orchestra, the singers and I especially like the choir. La Boheme just makes sense for my ear, and Carmen does not.

  • I did not see this movie but last night I listened to Abbado's Carmen with Berganza, Domingo, Milnes and Cotrubas. It was my first complete Carmen and I have to say I don't like this opera, at least this performance. The only character I like is Michaela and Cotrubas singing it. Domingo's sound is generally too stringent for me and sometimes he sounds like swallowing the words. I like Milnes more as Rigoletto then Escamillo, and Berganza is OK, elegant and stylish but I felt almost nothing.

  • ne fun here

  • 8:06....Wou! O__O

  • I absolut love this opera!!!!!

  • A fantastic film shot outside with amazing scenery. Can be rented from Netflix or perhaps Blockbuster.

  • This looks like an amazing production! Do you know where I can get it?

  • It's an insanely expensive DVD.. check Amazon:/

  • I just looked for this DVD at Amazon...

The cheapest seller demands 194 $ and the price rises to more than 300 $ :(

  • A friend of mine told me that this film is available via torrent, I haven't checked if he has told me the truth ;)

    All the best

  • Listen to that tenor sound!!!!!

  • But he's a bastard. He had a girlfriend, Micaela, he cheated her with Carmen. SO HE IS THE SAME AS HER!!! If you want to know anything else.. I sing in opera Carmen so I can tell you everything

  • He kills her cause she doesn't love him any more. She loves Escamillo now

  • Do you really think that she loves Escamillo? I just think that she just wants the freedom to skip around from guy to guy.

  • woooow!! great video!! i love carmen! but i didn't understand why he kills her!! i mean, he says he loves her and he wants her to be with him...so? why did he kill her? =S

  • Jealousy and frustration. He gave up a woman who was devoted to him, his family, his military career for her. He even lived as an outlaw. His breaking point was when she threw the ring. It was like she threw everything he had given up for her back in his face. He just snapped.

  • men are sooo complicated....

  • a great film with the Bizet's original music score ( no cuts)

  • Sorry, posted under the wrong clip, the below was for Habanera..

  • Excellent performance! This was 25 years ago. Now go to Kaufmann Antonacci Carmen and see what the Royal Opera London came up with. You will be spellbound. And it has untertitles.Enjoy!

  • This was a great recommendation. Thank you! In return, search "Cardinalli singing Aranjuez" for a girl with big hair and a big voice type I haven't heard before but could so see in this scene.

  • I don't know the libretto so I couldn't understand what they were saying, only the main idea of it all. But what passion, what intensity! Beautiful!

  • Funny thing is that this opera flopped in a major way when it first came out - it only achieved popularity after poor Bizet packed it in.....great film btw....

  • This is so beautiful...

  • It's European.

  • Nice job!

  • Placido Domingo was very handsom in his younger days

  • Stop Corrida!!!!

  • if he really loved her, then he would have let her go just like the Phantom did for Christine in the Phantom of the Opera. this guy just has problems. awesosme voice though.

she is so beautiful. love this opera.

  • Of course the whole opera is awesome, But you can't compare between the phantom and Jose, also Christine and Carmen. Jose lost everything to save his love while Carmen just destroyed the man and never loved him. Which didn't happen in the phantom of the opera

  • ok, sorry. i didn't know the whole story behind it besides the fact that she refused his proposal. she's a gypsy, so doesn't she have to stay single?

  • Love this, thanks so much for posting!

  • Julia Migenes Johnson did have a short carrier;she deserved more; great artist.

  • Does anyone know where I can rent this video???

  • What language are they singing it in?

  • It's sung in French even though it's set in Spain. I forgot which town.

  • Sevilla

  • French

  • I found out on Saturday thanks after listening to the Met broadcast!

  • Carmen de Bizet!!! Great. The world would be better with us on Earth. Amor, amor, fiesta, amor y fiesta siempre!:)

  • Siempre lloro cuando oigo esta canción! Placido Domingo está muy guapo!

  • I'm crying. Everytime I listen to this, something really strange and incredible happens to me, and I just can't control myself. Unbelievable.

  • Great film, great voices!

  • Una obra maestra para la televisión.

  • De que año fue la grabación?

  • 1984. Extraordinaria ¿verdad?

  • Totalmente de acuerdo contigo.

  • Simply marvelous!!

  • How could he kill her....even if she didn't want to marry him and he loved her so, he shouldn't have killed her. So sad. So, so, so sad. But the singing was excellent.

  • Its opera! Someone to die! LOL
