I hate the way this was filmed. It's a song with a man talking to god, yet he's looking directly at me, which takes me out of the moment. It was hard to even concentrate on the music, which was beautiful, because of the ridiculous hand movements.
@musicalbacon2 He's not talking to God; it's an inner dialogue, thought, not said, which is why there is so much visual focus. The only time eye contact is lost is when break, blow, burn or knock is spoken.
All of the hand gestures are choreographed (of course, /all/ of the movements are.)
This is such a great aria. I first heard it during a live broadcast (Amsterdam) and immediately book tickets to see it. The live performance was wonderful. Every month or so I search youtube for this aria, and listen to it again and again and again.

I had the amazing opportunity to sing in the chorus Dr. Atomic with this cast in Atlanta. Riveting. Gerald Finley is remarkable.

In my opinion one of the most beautiful contemporary operas. This aria in particular is amazing!

you know: Gerald Finley is a bass-baritone...? But thanks for posting this :-)

@aeru9 Ah, yes. My fault for repeating what I read without utilizing my brain. I'm just a trumpeter, anyway. :)

@trombahonker
yes, sometimes I'm surprised about his high notes... but he will sing Wagner's Sachs and this stuff, so..
anyway... do you like this opera?

@aeru9 Yes, it's fantastic! I've seen the productions by the Met and Netherlands Opera; they were both wonderfully performed.

@trombahonker
Yeah. I actually don't like this kind of music, but this aria (and the whole opera) were just great.

@trombahonker I'd love to see an entire performance! I'm very interested in English (especially American) opera; I'd like to see a lot more of it.
