Listen to all of the late 70s bass virtuosi like Jaco and Stanley Clarke and all of the fusion guys and lots of what they play, aggression-wise seems to come out of Entwhistle.
Met him at an exhibit of his art in NYC on one of his last tours with The Who. The fact that he was practically deaf didn't surprise me since I've lost a few dbs myself at Who shows over the years but that he was so small was a shocker. With his huge sound, long necked bass and tall shoes he always seemed gigantic onstage to me. No one sounds remotely like him to this day.
ive only dicovered the who in the last ten years as im 26 but what a band of muisicians all individual in there playing not any bands like them since that can be that good live
mccartney really changed the face of bass playing...
...look at what he did on "all my loving"...they recorded that in 1963...the best and highest paid studio session player would not have come up with that line at the time...
i love ox's playing..he along with paul were the great innovators on bass...
i will alway revere ox for his french horn playing on the overture in tommy...
@StraightTwoDVD i didn't know that. (french horn). that's awesome.
totally agree with your comment. people have learned and been influenced sooo much by the Beatles that they're starting to forget what each of them did. all very incredible and innovative.
thats the amazing thing about tommy...they wanted pete to slap orchestral backing onto it..it refused...he wanted to be able to perform it live without augmenting the band...
i had always thought it must have been some classical bloke from the london symphony orchestra playing the french horn parts on tommy...but it is "ox"...and he is credited on the recording as well....
Hey Chicago Rick, did you miss english class? Learn to spell and write! If you can achieve that third grade skill level, maybe the rest of us will read what you have to say.... MORON>
yo pete townshend is the shit but doesnt he now with the bald head look like the muppets scientist dude the skinny one who was partners with the oen with the glasses lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think his name was beaker
i agree and disagree. of all guitarists he was the greatest live without a doubt. he was a fricking master at writing songs evidenced by them selling out with the same material for many years. pete was a great rythem guitarist but his lead riffs... lets not go there :) imo this disqualifies him as one of the greatest musicians but as an artist its hard to top him. pete keep going we still enjoy every second you play!!!
The funny thing about Pete is that the older he gets, the better his lead playing gets. It's almost too little too late. But even in the day, he was pretty good. Guys like Clapton and Beck are as good as they are because they practised lead playing all day long. Whereas players likeTownshend and George Harrison came up with great stuff on the spot which is more interesting I think. I mean Jeff Beck can't sing or write, so you see the trade off.
Pete is the best "all around" singer/songwriter/musician/ producer/ showman. He does it all. The only other person in his league is Paul Mc. These two are great.
first of all, pete was not a rhythm guitarist, he was the lead guitarist for the who, and he came up with some of the greatest rock guitar solos of all time!!!!!!
I met John on the last tour in New York the night after they played the 9/11 benefit concert at Madison Square Gardens. He was the nicest, laid back guy. He seemed to not even know how great a bass player he was. I said to him, "You've better than you have ever been." He looked surprised yet flattered. I was thinking about all these film clips thinking, "This is that guy". My point is, he was completely humble and approchable.
Whoa! Tops! Explosively dynamic. Can imagine the shows we have missed that were never recorded? This is what they were doing night after night at this point. It boggles my mind how great this tour was. State side and the U.K. I mean come on people. Let's all just say what we are thinking. The are the greatest ;) .
john could sing like all get out even into his older days before he passed away. personally i liked his voice the best. still, the who was great though.
I think that Roger has the best sense of humour out of all of them really. Just look at some of the interviews on here, haha, they're all funny but Roger makes me laugh the most.
Well, you'd prob'ly expect this sort of reply on a video like this one, but I think that John had the best sense of humor. Just listen to the lyrics to some of his songs like Silas Stingy and I've Been Away (so looong). He's got such a droll, dark sense of humor. Love him.
John certainly had a macabre sense of humor. Who else could write songs about spiders, suicide, test tube babies and make them enjoyable? If you don't have his solo lp whistle Rymes, you haven't heard it all. The man was a true juggernaut!
yeah well he was sulking when they made this documenatry man cos he aint on it and he needs all the TV he can get,,, appaernetly he kept moaning about Entwisle's volume,, what a twat eh ? John should have put it over his head !!
Ox's Tale will be released in the U.S.A. on August 22, 2006. That's the day before Keith Moons birthday. It was released in Japan & The U.K on May 1st of 2006. I'll be adding it to my collection...
Damn, this movie is a must have. Pino can turn his bass up as much as he likes, he'll never be able to fully replace John. Went to see the Who this year but I was astounded how much I missed him.
The thing about the OX was that he wasn't just a bassist. HE WAS A BASS GUITARIST!! His fuckin' bass barked, like a mean ass hound dog!! He was crucial along with Townshend and Moonie for creating that beautiful WHO racket!!! BASS PLAYER MAGAZINE voted him BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM- Yeah, he's a ROCK GOD!
