Actually, he was waiting for her in Los Angeles when she returned from France after one year. You should watch the movie again. The movie gets better the more you watch it. It is a small budget film so if you miss one line you can miss a lot of the explanations. For example: the one year was significant because she was 18 and no longer a minor.

hayden panettiere is WAY too young for this movie. I would see her more perfect for movies like a teenage movie but in this one, it makes more sense if an older actress replaced her role and change the script a bit...like for instance an actress going to grad school, etc. Hayden is also too cute for this movie.
