holy gods! i somehow have never heard one of my favorite modern artist playing a cover of one of my favortie classic artists best songs..... i am utterly speechless at the sheer beauty of Thoms delivery.... this is on repeat until i pass out
Thom Yorke actually transposed the song down two steps :). Perfect key though, sounds great. But it gives you and idea of Neil Young's ability to take those high notes.
Hmm I saw a picture of Thom singing with Tenacious D, supposedly from a Bridge School Benefit. Can anyone tell me more about when that might have happened?
I don;'t normally get drunk but i am wasted tonight and this is fucking amazing most importand person that i'm not related to in the world to me forever and forever!

@koalajones88 although aware of the possible danger in deadly singing technique, it almosts give's this struggling down to earth quality , or not, whatever im just a wet towel.
@Rick4LB Thom Yorke is lead singer, and front man to Radiohead, he also has solo work with a supergroup consisting of Flea (bassist from Red Hot Chili Peppers), producer Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker (Done things for R.E.M. Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, etc.), and Mario Refosco
ive been a big radiohead fan for some time , and i just started listening to neil young, and i was looking for songs by him and i found this, its absolutely amazing.
Neil Young is a visionary and I count myself among his followers. Hell, I grew up in the same city as he did (Winnipeg). Yes, they were different life experiences, but if you know what living on the Prairies is like then you'll understand what it means to be at the centre of everything, but in the middle of nowhere at the same time.
am seeing Thom at the big chill in august this summer. Cant wait, wud b nice if he plays this, but tbh anything he plays will be a high point in my life!!
Awesome! I don't think anybody could cover it as well as Thom did, he has that certain quirkeyness in his voice much like Neil does which is especially noticible on this song.
I am 56 y/o and have seen Neil do this many times in concert. Just like I have been lucky enough to see people like Jackson Browne, Springsteen, Dylan, SRV, Allmans, Zep, Mark Knopfler, Merle Haggard------the list goes on. I always look at it as a tribute when the "young" cover the "old" ------the spirit of the music lives on
Neil Young was sitting right behind him when he played this, and Young let him use the very piano that the song was written on. There's no rules playing covers and when the original artist gives you the blessing to play (Thom asked him that day if it was alright), you can play it however you wish.
Did they actually change anything? It sounds exactly like the original, and that's not a good thing. Covers should sound different. Covers aso shouldn't be of classics like this because as much as I appreciate the homage, covers of classics always sounds cheap.
I actually find it irritating when people take to many liberties when playing someone elses song, i wouldn't be to thrilled about it, like an insult to my music, u don't think it was good enough so u have to change it, Thom Yorke definitely did it justice, very respectful.
I think that somebody wants to cover your song is compliment enough. When you cover a song, it's not to better it, it's to recreate it to honour the song because you love it. I mean, I don't dislike this cover because I love the original and this sounds just like it. I think it'd be a lot more interesting if they altered it a bit more to sound more like Radiohead.
are you joking? vedder's done so many covers, look up The Beatles Hide Your Love Away, any Bob Dylan song, The Who, the guy can do ANYTHING justice...think before you type, have you ever heard a vedder cover?
He's a hell of an artist dude, I like him better than Thom Yorke and Radiohead (though I like him too). He's going to be remembered as one of our time's most influential people. Not to the extent Dylan or Zeppelin is...maybe more of a The Who kind of popularity.

All in a dream man wishes he could sin without correction and jesus wasnt real and God's terrible wrath has to be unjust, it has to. That's mans dream. The truth is that man is the wretch and hates God for being just. Man wants to leave his creation, earth, for something not so telling, not so abrasive. But if you are honest with yourself and look close, it is man that is abrasive and would belive a lie, even if he knows he could only live that lie for a short time, even to the 2nd death.
Hate to say it man, but this is Neil Young, and as far as Rock N' Roll is concerned, he is "the Prophet." If you, or anyone else, can't except his music for its poetic genius, looking deeper into meaning then most, and just enjoying it for what it is, then that's just sad = [

Thom Yorke's voice isn't bad, but he sounds the same on EVERYTHING. His voice is just dull to me. There seems to be no variation. Thom Yorke does not sound like Neil Young, I dunno where people get that from. Thom Yorke sings in a falsetto, Neil Young has a high tenor naturally and on this song he did actually use a falsetto, but on later versions he uses his regular high tenor. He just wasn't confident in his voice at that time he recorded this.
I'm not particularly a fan of Thom Yorke's but this is a good cover. I have heard a cover of this song that I liked better, by a local female singer, but this is both good and respectful, if anything for me it stays a little too close to the original.
