I think that the relationship with china is more important to U.S. officials right now than most other relationships. They aren't going to back a "minor" country and destroy that relationship. And like I said, if the treatment of Tibet changes and the relationship with the Tibet government in esile changes then it won't really be an issue anymore anyway.

Actually I should have worded that differently. The Tibetans I know will always respect what he says and follow it. They are basically saying they don't agree with it and when he dies all bets are off. What you guys need to see is that by putting so much pressure on them, by clamping down so hard, you are only radicalising more of them. It is similar to what is happening with young Muslims and America. Sometimes force only makes things worse.
Not everyone in the world looks at things the way you Han tend to. Your culture was stripped of all it's spirit and deeper meaning. Now there is a vacuum that must be filled with more economic and material growth, everything else, including freedom and human rights, is put aside. My point is that the town are linked. Many tibetans still hold a grudge over the cultural revolution. Can you imagine people from another place who are of a different race and culture showing up and destrying you most priceless artefacts. Monasteries that have stood for centuries. It would be very hard to trust them again. If the realtionship had been more respectful in nature I wouldn't be suprised if most Tibetans wouldn be fine being a part of China.
And if a free deomcratic China opened up Tibet, stopped disrespecting it's religion, stopped taking away top religious figures like the Panchen Lama and replacing them with CCP selected individuals, stopped making rediculous orders like the CCP has to approve of reincarnations (how silly) and let the Tibetan people live as they chose, many Tibetan would probably be ok with being a part of China. It is about mutual respect.

Last I looked there was no call to split the true regions that make up what is culturally, linguistically and racially the "chinese" parts of China. This is more about Han people trying to dominate their smaller minority neighbors than China being broken apart.
Considering how massive the Han population is by comparison if Tibet is not closed off to the Han population then it will become a Han region in little time. Most Tibetans I know already say that the Han have taken over, becoming the vast majority in many parts of Tibet. They also say that the younger Tibetans are now speaking Tibetan with Mandarin tones and often mixing in Mandarin words to create a mixed up language. They will lose their culture as many conquered people have the world over.

The U.S. government recognizes Tibet as part of China for the same reason it abides by the one China policy regarding Taiwan and allowed the PRC to take the ROC's place at the U.N. Hi Jason, When Tibet was invaded in 1949 it wasn't a perfect country - no country is, but that didn't justify the invasion and it wasn't the motivation for the invasion either. By the way Jason in China there is no free healthcare - I have many Chinese friends who have told me that in China if you have no money you are not allowed into the hospital and you even seen people lying dead outside hospitals.

Jason - I know Tibet wasn't recognised by others as an independent country - I have a map from 1935 which shows this - but there were very few independent countries at the time - they were viewed as colonies, but Tibet was independent otherwise how could it be invaded.
And it was never part of China - It was part of the Mongolian Empire, first by Genghis Khan - and the Ming and various other dynasties were mongolian.

Perhaps the CCP should listen to him on the matter and work with him,but they have spent decades making him a demon so how could they at this point without losing face?? His middle way strategy isn't followed by many Tibetans, especially younger ones. They want independance. I see no reason that a free independant Tibet should not have the same living standards as its neighbors in Nepal or Bhutan, and if it is run well it's people could have a decent life WITHOUT the occupation of Chinese troops

Actually I should have worded that differently. The Tibetans I know will always respect what he says and follow it. They are basically saying they don't agree with it and when he dies all bets are off. What you guys need to see is that by putting so much pressure on them, by clamping down so hard, you are only radicalising more of them. It is similar to what is happening with young Muslims and America. Sometimes force only makes things worse.

Not everyone in the world looks at things the way you Han tend to. Your culture was stripped of all it's spirit and deeper meaning. Now there is a vacuum that must be filled with more economic and material growth, everything else, including freedom and human rights, is put aside. There are some people in the world who actually value other things as well, they aren't satisfied with simple standard of living improvements.

I don;t justify it. Bush was the worst president we ever had and many people in his administration should be in jail. I also don't value the lives of Iraqi civilians any less than americans. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Sometimes you have to step away from national pride and admit it. Many of my fellow citizens can't do that, so I'm not suprised it's the same in China. People are people.

My point is that the town are linked. Many tibetans still hold a grudge over the cultural revolution. Can you imagine people from another place who are of a different race and culture showing up and destrying you most priceless artefacts. Monasteries that have stood for centuries. It would be very hard to trust them again. If the realtionship had been more respectful in nature I wouldn't be suprised if most Tibetans wouldn be fine being a part of China.

Considering how massive the Han population is by comparison if Tibet is not closed off to the Han population then it will become a Han region in little time. Most Tibetans I know already say that the Han have taken over, becoming the vast majority in many parts of Tibet. They also say that the younger Tibetans are now speaking Tibetan with Mandarin tones and often mixing in Mandarin words to create a mixed up language. They will lose their culture as many conquered people have the world over.

As I have said before, I am half Cherokee...so I am far more knowledgeable on the state of Native peoples in America than you are. Today, after centuries of disease realted death and genocide the population of Native peoples is less than 1 percent of the population. Mongolia has a similar history to Tibet moron...that was my point. There is no consistency to the logic of Tibets occupation. Mongolia was allowed to remain free from China because Stalin wanted it that way. Mao was forced by his master to allow the people of Mongolia to have a referendum. They chose to be independant, as I have no doubt Tibetan people would have done as well.

How can you compare Beijing, the historic capital of China, to Tibet, a non Han country with it's own language, culture, writing system and unique religion seperate from any other part of what is now China?? Tibet was never Chinese. It had a trubutary relationship to the dynastic governments of the past. Chinese people overthrew the Emperor, ending that government and all of it's previous relationships, including Tibet.

The U.S. government recognizes Tibet as part of China for the same reason it abides by the one China policy regarding Taiwan and allowed the PRC to take the ROC's place at the U.N. If you want to have decent diplomatic relations with China you have no choice but to take these positions. It has nothing to do with right or wrong, with justice. Texas can leave the union any time it wants. If the majority of people inside Texas wanted to be independant they could vote on it.That cant happen in tibet

Stop bringing up Iraq to try and justify Chinas bad actions. First of all the IRaq war was the product of fear caused my 911 and a misleading Bush administration that should answer for it (although they never will). The main difference is that American forces are leaving Iraq after allowing elections to take place. If you can connect this to Tibet, which has been occupied by China for 50 years and where elections have never been allowed then you are just ebing dishonest.

First of all, you ignore WW1 and the effect that had on German relations with the countries it fought against in that war. The Nazi party effectively broke the treaties signed with those countries when it began it's rebuilding of an offensive military and it's subsequent invasions.

As I have said, other places that are now independant nations or parts of other nations like Russia also show up on older maps as belonging to the Qing dynasty era China. The Qing ended, just like the british empire ended. When both empires ended many of the territories they controlled wished for freedom from their previous masters. The Tibetans are no different.

It is the second largest economy in the world, a place it will soon lose to China if it hasn't already. Money talks, you should know that. Why does America defend Taiwan, which is also claimed by China as a part of its territory?? It is all about politics, money and international influence. Tibet had no strong political ties, it was a very isolated country and had few economic ties.

Hi Jason, When Tibet was invaded in 1949 it wasn't a perfect country - no country is, but that didn't justify the invasion and it wasn't the motivation for the invasion either. By the way Jason in China there is no free healthcare - I have many Chinese friends who have told me that in China if you have no money you are not allowed into the hospital and you even seen people lying dead outside hospitals.

Jason - I know Tibet wasn't recognised by others as an independent country - I have a map from 1935 which shows this - but there were very few independent countries at the time - they were viewed as colonies, but Tibet was independent otherwise how could it be invaded.
And it was never part of China - It was part of the Mongolian Empire, first by Genghis Khan - and the Ming and various other dynasties were mongolian.

I just saw a tv program about China. Among many interesting things, he last tradicional bow maker told about the Cultural Revoltutrion, when people was killed for "crimes" as doing ancient crafts. Today he is free again to do those marvellous bows, with bamboo and stuff, but some pro CPC people around here still love Presidet Mao's ideas of "culture"...

That protest needed more supporters. I think we should protest the racism and skinheads attacks that occur frequently in Moscow. I heard the government is turning a blind a to this. Youtube russian skinheads and you'll see for yourself.

even on youtube you can see footage of athrocities comited by China against Tibetans. Even Chinese did not killed 1,6 million Tibetans (a few guys, compared with Comrade Mao's victims of Cultural Revolution), Tibet is still a free country.

I am so jealous I always wanted to be a slave in a brick factory or perhaps working making steamed buns from cardboard. China does have wars you just sent a massive shipment of arms to Africa. Personally I always loved China and its culture I grew up doing wushu and watching kung fu movies - But I also worked with Tibetan refugees in India and seeing the terrible suffering that these wonderful old and young people had been though with the invasion and occupation made me support there cause

Russia will never support tibet, really only ethnic tibetian people was there, most of the Russians dont even give sh*t about it. Well friends sometimes life is unfair, you have to endure under Chine's rule your struggle is pretty pathetic you cant do anything good it just will cause more blood to be spilled and iam afraid it will mostly tibetian blood. btw
