LOVE my HAK. Have lots of nice blades...but the HAK and the several different sheaths and mounting options I have for it means it's always with me.
usually not my only blade...but never more than a sec from a fast draw.
Anyone who doubts the effectiveness of the blade needs to try it - or at least watch the videos - heck some of the ones I bought are on YT here for free!
another bonus: ZERO freak out factor if you pull it to open a package at the office or something.
I'd get one of those hide-away knives, but they are not cheap ($140-$200, saw the website). I like the concept, it is easy to conceal, and you have a secure, locked-in grip.
However the downside that I see is that it is small, and in a self defense situation in which someone is trying to attack you with say a knife or a gun, it wouldn't measure up. Folders are also easy to conceal, and as long as the other person doesn't have a gun, you can open most up (especially spring assist) quite easily.
length of the knife has little to do with its effectiveness hand to hand. This knife is long enough to cut through somebodies arm to the bone, and long enough to get to virtually every major artery in your body.
@matthias66 $140 - $200 is rediculous. There are other small knives you can get like this for much cheaper. There is the Urban Pal by Cold Steel which is only $23.
I have a hide away. They are bad ass knives, and you can hide them pretty much anywhere. I keep one in my boot at all times and most of the time two behind my belt, one of which is seated behind my gun holster.
i like spring assist. The Gerber Presto 3.0 FAST Knife is excellent. kinda bulky, just like any other folder, but it weighs a little bit more. the perfect hide away knife is the one that your enemy dosen't see, no matter what the size, the best is what your enemy dosen't see.
great design. you can grab on to other weapons while using it and you can cut someone in surprise. i mean how many people actually go for the kill with knife? only flaw i see is that since its light and small, you can't really put additional strength into it and that you can't actually throw it like other knife. and that you can bust your finger if you don't use it right. don't try to intimidate someone with it unless its on someone's throat and always go for the soft spot like heel, eye or wrist
go ahead. Honestly, don't carry it all that much myself. Its just one in a large collection and its a knife I still like. As far as EDC, if I carry a folder, I usually have a Dalton Rung Sat with the spring removed, a Benchmade 710 or a Strider SnG.
If I carry a fixed blade its either this or a Busse Game Warden.
a cool thing i learned on the history channel lol: to get around all the laws and regulations for knives and weapons, every hell's angel carries on his person: 1 - a giant (D cell) mag flashlight on his belt. perfectly legal and could easily beat someone to death with it. 2 - tie a regular handkerchief in a loop and then attach a masterlock to it. stick the lock-end in your pocket with the handkerchief hanging out for easy access. again, all 100% legal and perfect for hand to hand combat
Yeah an Italian Stiletto is cool for owning and playing with but not for anything else. It has almost no purpose beside its looks and collective purpose you probally have a cheap one you picked up at a flea market that isnt even sharp. The Stiletto is a cool design but has almost no function.
I would prefer to carry around a butterfly knife than those, or even a switchblade. It would take forever to get the hide away knife out, and it doesnt even look at dangerous as a standard pocket knife.
butterfly knives are impractical when it comes to fighting they are mainly for intimidation but usually if someone pulls a butterfly knife on you it means they don't know what they are doing
You shouldn't assume someone with a balisong isn't well trained or is trying to intimidate you. Practitioners of FMA styles train with that weapon and are quite formidable with it.
Also most people who have butterfly knives have the cheap china made ones that lack a pocket clip and a working latch. So they would have to dig around in their pocket before they could get to it. And most pocket knives can open as fast or fast then most skilled balisong carriers. My knife (Kershaw Tanto Blur) opens as fast or faster then most automatics i've seen. It also has a pocketclip so I can get it from pocket to hand in about 2-3 seconds
Nice posts. True about balisongs. They are pretty specialized. For the average person a nice folder or assisted opener will do the job nicely. I was merely pointing out that certain martial arts train in them as they are a traditional weapon. By modern standards a good recent tactical model will do just fine. I have the CRKT folding Hissatsu and a few Benchmades in my EDC.
Yeah I like the Tanto edge for EDC cause if I need to defend myself the blade was basically designed to provide the best stabbing ability. But I also used it inplace of sissors and many other things.
tanto does not seem best for stabing... its not pointy so theres more resistance. its not good for slashing either and its bad for cutting things... fail.
ill give you the stronger point but the blade shape is crap. there is more resistance there than a regular knife so the resistance is more.
also im using a normal folding tanto as a reference point because the knife in this video is retarded, its too small and you will fuck up your fingers having them in a hole like that they will either break or it will hurt too much to keep using it
Yes , and that is why the Samurai, embraced the tanto point, cause it was so poor for fighting with! SO sad those amateur warriors never thought to just put a point on their swords
Yeah I do agree with the whole Balisong is a martial arts weapon. But the knife has gotten such a bad reputation from people being jackasses with it. To the point that in most states you can't own one.
I have a Smith and Wesson pocket knife I used to carry it every day but the pocket clip started to break so I went to this Piece of shit assisted opening and then back to my Kershaw.
It's more dangerous than a pocket knife because it is difficult to disarm someone wielding it and it's easier to conceal. Don't be deceived by the short blade length either. A moderately trained person would slice you to ribbons with one. the blade is long enough to cause significant trauma.
It's no different to take then a regular knife if not somewhat easier most people who do carry them are cocky idiots who just know one or two trick and think they are badasses. The knife in the video is much better you can reach for your keys and pull it out no flipping or press a button needed. I prefer a pocket knife to a balisong. No offence I love the knife and own several but they just arn't practical
How is that hidden, even the case for the blade isnt disguised at all. if you know of these types of knifes then you could prolly spot it. just saying
I didn't name it. I think the name points more to the fact that it is very small and easily carried and concealed, not that it is somehow camoflage or invisible in plain view. Its very easy to carry in several places with just a zip tie or some velcro.
Probably more for slashing just due to the shape and angle, but you could pretty much punch as normal with it held in a closed fist.
In order to actually stab with it you would need to kind of cock your hand to the side and do almost like a ridgehand type motion, but a little more staight forward as opposed to the roundhouse type motion of a ridgehand strike. don't know if I am explaining it that good, but if you look at it in my hand you should kind of be able to see what I mean.
Push Knife! Slashing needs a blade longer than 2", which the HideAway doesn't have. Watch the instructional videos that are online. Those videos are sold as an option to teach you the best techniques for the Hide Away Knife.
