Is it my imagination or are DH's voice and technique here markedly different from his earlier performances (where his voice is much suppler and creamier, and the top notes sweeter)? It seems as if he is singing at his jaw hinge, and kind of shoving is face back into his neck. Is he trying to manufacture larger or lower sound, or is it just a bad camera close-up?
@sopranosd Your observations are good. He started to making darker and wider sound (by forcing his throat), which is ruining his technique. I think he has very colourful voice itself, i don`t see a point doing it "more" colourful.
I agree with you. F.e. his early count Almaviva is good.
@BassoNero - Thanks very much for the confirmation of my thoughts, although that does mean DH is pushing and being very naughty, technically. I so hope he returns to his sweeter tone, because I just love his voice. Especially with a rich voice, lighter is better, in my opinion. It releases the natural color. Pushing doesn't do a singer any favors.
Just to think, I got sick at the Toulouse Vocal Competition in 1988, just so he could win first place! Amazing how life works. He's sure an artist, but I prefer a brighter, more italianate color. But there's no denying he can sing....
SUBLIME! I just took a crazy pleasure from this ! I really myself in Dmitri's as I do for my preferred Alfred and Elena! They all give a veritable sense to lyrics and opera! I just shall include this immediately amongst my other preferred videos! I thank you very much for these short and pleasant 7:41 minutes of this remarquable scene,Gabba02! Excellent continuation and Thursday!:) Durandal87

I've seen Hvorostovsky as Rigolette, Simon Boccanegro, in Un Ballo, and in concert. He is among our top baritones, with a stunning voice and technique; and, he can act. This clip is an excellent example of his talent.
The rood screen behind , him is from the last act of Don Carlo . I saw Sherril Milnes yowelll his way through these aris on a tuesday night during a snow storm in feb 1978 .
When was this made? He doesn't sound as good as usual... it's really pushed and dark, i'm used to a more cantabile dmitri, his high is still ridiculous, but he's never looked like he's working at all, here he does...
maybe cause he's acting, and you're not just hearing it but your watching it. you've probably heard him more than watching him, because even in this song he's always but his emotion into it physically and vocally. with opera you have to act whenever you're singing a song, and that's part of where the emotion of a song comes in. it may sound pushed in some parts, but it's not pushed in an unhealthy way, he's pushing those parts because posa is sying in these 2 arias. learn about don carlo/carlos
well that was conceitedly bitchy. you must not perform these arias well... i mean, a real opera singer with a real career doesn't comment like that on youtube, so you must be a little unknown and you think by saying "i'll keep that in mind when i perform these arias" that you're wearing the big boy pants now. THOUSANDS of baritones around the world perform these arias, but who's getting attention for performing them well? people like hvorostovsky, not people like you you conceitedly justify.
I'm not sure of this but fom what I've seen by him he is an amazing actor as well as singer. This song is when the character is dying. Maybe he's trying to act like he's actually dying. I'm not sure but thats how I look at it
I heard him sing these in Carnegie Hall not but a week ago and he sounded excellent. But of course he will not sound the same way he did ten years ago.
I have been to several recitals and operas where Dmitri was singing and he projected just fine. I think that some on Youtube are confusing the terms "Large" and "projection". Dmitri does have a "large" voice, but it's quality does not allow it to carry as well as someone like Bastianini, who sang with a brighter Timbre. That's not to say that Dmitri has a small voice though, it is just that his voice has different acoustical qualities.
I heard the rumors about Dimitry, and I don't realy care. One of my favrites, Mario Lanza was also a mike artist but he remains one of my favorite singers upto now. The sad thing that if that's true(miking) it's realy misleading the audience.
Soon there will be no need for real opera singers, opera will turn into somewhat Broadway show.
Remember, that old bradway did not use mikes.
Tecknology today is so good that usual opera goer will not hear the difference, but there is a difference between pure accoustic and ampl sound, of course we absolutly cannot tell if from the recordings.
There no reason that we should dislike him))) God gave him a beautiful voice,he is a very good musucian and knows how to act but as I said before there are operatic voices like Del Monaco, Siepi, Callas, Domingo ect and classicly trained but small ones like Dimitry, C.Bartoli, Netrebko etc who are making huge careers today because technology allows that.
I've always liked Hvortovsky, but have never heard him in person. Is there anybody who has here who DOESN'T think his voice is small or that it doesn't carry? Just curious -- years ago, I knew some guys who heard him not at the Met, but another venue (Carnegie Hall, I think), and they had no trouble hearing him there with full orchestra --
I have heard Dmitri at the Covent Garden and at the Teatro Real at Verdian roles and as Onegin too.I have heard him perfectly and his voice was not covered by the orchestra. Unfortunately, nowdays we don't have voices of the quality of Callas, del Monaco or Bastianini to mention but three, we're living another times, but I think we are talking of a good opera singer.
@stevevandien I have heard him in live performances in whole opera productions with full orchestras in Vienna, Covent Garden, the Met and various other opera houses (with no mikes in any of them) and in Salzburg in the Grosses Festspielhaus which is a very big opera house and his voice is big enough. They most certainly do not use mikes except for broadcasts and videos and then you see the mikes hanging over both orchestra and singers.
I am soooo tired of this! whenever someone has a "small" voice but somehow manages to project, people always say they're miked. I remeber some "learned" persons saying the same thing of a few Fischer-Dieskau recordings here on Youtube. Enough!!!
Miking opera is now quite popular these days(Met, Chicago, etc) they never admit it but its a reality. What more dissapointing is that they don't mike everybody so big voices actualy sound rather small in comperison to singers like Dimitry or Cecilia Bartoli. As a recording artist he's one of my favorire baritones, but don't tell me he's an opera voice, please)))
Hey gyus, for those who like Hvorostovsky I'd say he is a real classy singer but one thing is bothering me that he's pretending to be an opera singer, which he is not simply because of his small voice, yes he sounds great, I agree.
I had rare possibility to hear him without mike and it was very dissapionting. As far as I know his agent would never sign a contract with the operas who don't have miking technology.
This is a true star turn. Dimitri used his breath support in a virtuosic fashion. A voice need not be enourmous to make an enourmous emotional impact. If Gabba is in the possesion of James Morris's contribution to this gala I would be very grateful, I received a phone call at that time in the broadcast and missed it
