  • Its terrible that they focussed pretty much solely on his first story. What about Remembrance? Fenric? Survival?

  • Survival is a great 7th doctor story! Why not that one?

  • whats the music called at 8.26?

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone watching this... DON'T watch Dragonfire! Watch Remembrance of the Daleks, The Curse of Fenric, or Survival.

(And PS, Sylvester McCoy is going to star in the 2 new Hobbit films as Radagast...)

  • Dragonfire was shite. Any episode from McCoy's second or third season would have been better.

  • I can't stop thinking how much better it would have been if Ken Campbell had landed the role.

He would have put the dampers on JNT's panto nonsense.

  • McCoy is my doctor, my favorite villian is The Kandyman. always enjoy a villian who will torture you with something that under normal circumstances would be very pleasant.

  • I don't care what anyone else thinks, the 7th doctor is my favorite. He overcame the scripts and production by having great performances as the doctor in my opinion.

My story would have probably been Curse of Fenric.

  • Sylvester McCoy..................oh dear!

  • Why anyone would vote for Dragonfire instead of The Curse of Fenric or Ghostlight is beyond me

  • but then again, it's time to pass the torch to a new generation who will no doubt deride dr who in 20 years. i guess we're all fickle at heart

  • sylvester was my doctor! and to all the naysayers who say that the scripts were poor, etc...when you're 8 years old, green babies hatching from eggs, the kandyman, the destroyer, fenric vampires were bloody terrifying and great fun! it's such a shame it was cancelled before cartmel realised his vision - i would have loved to have seen a lungbarrow serial. it would have certainly beaten eyes floating in skies, threatening to blow up the earth; smilers & episode wasting pollen

  • Sylvester is returning to the screens as Radagast the Brown in The Hobbit movie ;)

  • @Redcarpet01 he almost played bilbo baggins in lord of the rings but lost the part to ian holm

  • So people voted Dragonfire as the Sylvester McCoy episode they wanted to see, good grief......

Any episode from his last two seasons would have been better!

  • I like the way McCoy doesn't say at the end that Dragonfire wasn't voted the best, just 'Thank you for the votes'. Methinks they just didn't want to show another Dalek story, assuming 'Remembrance' was voted the best.

  • that thing at three minutes in looks like a chuncky xenomorph

  • That Dragonfire alien looks like a collector from Mass Effect 2.

  • OMG ace sounds 100% the same!!! mel was good, but ace was even better

  • whats the music at 8 26?

  • love the music that sort of techno anyone know the name when they play it? thanks

  • Note to self dont put headphones on and turn the headphones to full blast at 4:17 (joke)

  • Bonnie Langford got the job based on that God-awful scream?!

  • I hope Andrew Cartmel gets punched.

  • @theDingbat I wish he'd blow his nose, that's really unpleasant to listen to

  • I kind of liked Happiness Patrol personally.

  • @Ereldor Seriously? I thought it was one of the 7ths most lame stories, especially since it followed Remembrance Of The Daleks

  • @Sitopia I kind of have a soft spot for it because it was the first story I watched of the 7th Doctor, so I wasn't aware of it's chronological order in the series. But yeah, Remembrance was a great one as well.

  • Oh come on, Dragonfire?! Who voted for that one instead Ghostlight or The Curse of Fenric?

  • Whoever directed Dragonfire must have been a dunce!

  • I think Dragonfire was the best of the McCoy stories, next to The Happiness Patrol.

  • I think they should've picked Remembrance of the Daleks

  • One reason I love that cliffhanger is prrrrrrrrecicely because it apparently makes no sense at all! I love that sort of thing!

  • Whats the music @ 8:26

  • God, I'd forgotten how crap DW had become by this stage. Having grown up with Tom Baker and Peter Davison, I remember feeling totally insulted that the BBC was offering up such dross.

  • I love Sylvester! He became my new favorite Doctor!

  • @themirrorsofmymind so glad you agrrrrrrrrrree :3

  • I love that little wink he does! Proof that he is still capable of playing the Doctor! :D

  • @corrupt5358 hell!...i know you have not ever even seen 108 lost episodes of the first and second doctor!...so don't try to rank 21st century doctors 9...10...11 against the real thing!..."get a life! go kiss a girl!"

  • @corrupt5358...you are a smeghead and a fool!...please do not even compare the new series with any doctor who before 1990!...you are spoiled by big budget cgi...you are stupid to try to rank all doctors on some list...

  • @ufodavros1 while I disagree with corrupt5358 he was just saying his opinion no need to have gotten so worked up, I believe everyone can have there own opinions about the doctor I don't think there is a bad doctor, my current favourite is actually Matt smith even if he is new, followed by patrick troughton, just because the new series has good CGI people still watch it for the doctor

  • very strong team here!...my favorite companion of all time is ace dorothy gale mc******

  • Wow, Sophie Aldred looks a lot different.....

  • Sophie was terrific as Ace.

  • LOVED THE SYLVESTER MCCOY YEARS.

ACE ranks as one of THE Greatest companions of all time.

  • I think he's under rated myself and an enjoyable Doctor to watch, not at Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker or David Tennant's level, not even close, but still criminally under rated.

  • They should have Sylvester McCoy appear at the Seventh Doctor on the new series. He doesn't look too dissimilar from his days as The Doctor. A little make-up and a wig he could pass just fine!

  • Ace was ace.

  • I hope they bring back Ace in the new series, maybe much in the same way they brought back Sarah Jane..?

  • @xeractus Nah, not right now. She would be kind of superfluous with both Amy and River around... I don't think Moffat's bringing anyone back - he said in an Interview that he wouldn't bring anyone back just for the sake of bringing them back (I mean, It didn't quite work with Rose. All the cool foreshadowing and in the End she got nothing to do - and that would be even more OOC for ace than it was for Rose) and I think he's right. When a good story is finished, let it be.

  • rememberance of the daleks is my favourite macoy story love the bit where ace owns the dalek with a baseball bat and in the special features outtakes no one told ace that the dalek wasn't the stunt double so she bashed up one of the actually props

  • The Curse of Fenric was the tightest McCoy story. The part where he lays into Ace really shows how devious he was - it would've been great to see more of THAT Doctor.. Ah well at least he had an edgy death :)

  • Why do they not show clips of his better stories?? The last 2 seasons were the best in Doctor Who's history! It annoys me when people judge him on his earlier stories, he was the best Doctor!!!

  • how do you know??

  • @The13thDoctor95 In fairness, I leapt headfirst into a conclusion on behalf of Wikipedia's word. Unconfirmed rumour more than anything else.

  • He is not dead

  • Dragonfire? It was alright, but there were so many better McCoy adventures.

I favor Rememberance of the Daleks myself

  • Yeah I know what you mean, I would have prefered Curse of Fenric, or Ghostlight.

  • Especially when Ace owns the Dalek with the bat!

  • That was cool!

I like 'Rememberance' the best because of all the little nifty scenes like the Doctor retrieving the Hand of Omega and his confrontation with the Daleks at the end

  • my favorite companions are,

    SJS,Ace and Adric

  • I think they just went for Dragonfire because it has both companions it, therefore can then watch any other McCoy story without watching a stranger. I started on Dragonfire for the same reason.

  • Sylvester Mcoy was to my knowledge the first to portray the occasional appearance of the Dr's dark side to his character that RTD has took on board with Ecclestons and Tennants Docters persona

  • Ace, SJS, Tegan and Peri are my favourite classic seires companions

  • My favourite Classic Series Companions: Ace, Zoe & Nyssa.

  • Comment removed

  • @dim432 I think there should be a film or special with Chris/David & Matt

  • and Paul Mcgann

  • @Scottishgal78 Good idea! Any of the others (including McGann) don't look anything like they did back then, and bringing them bavk over and over again will just ruin everything... But heck, it would be kid of funny to gather al the 'new Series' Doctor's together. 9 and 11 would surely get along fine and do some badass together and 10, well, he dislikes ß and would probably feel uneasy around 11, so you have the tension u need in a group... Besides, i wanna see Rose and Amy in a catfight XD

  • @KendrixTermina Given the explanation that Tennant's version gave as to Davison's Doctor aging, I think they can make an explanation that would pass to let C.Baker through Tennant appear with Smith if they want. I'm not sure if Tom Baker would do it, but if he did, this also would work.

  • @Corrupt5358 I have to say, that was pretty accurate in my mind as well.

  • I fancied Ace more than anything in the world

  • Why so much focus on Dragonfire? It's a bit pants, to be honest.

  • Totally agree, Dragonfire wasn't as good as any episode in McCoy's 3rd season.

  • @Grafferty i agree, it should've been "the greatest show in the galaxy" just cos of the part where the pyschic circus explodes while sylvester walks away

  • @Grafferty because Ace turned up, and most people love that character... well, that'smy hypothesis!

  • @all13Doctors That's a fair observation - I like Ace very much - but it's not really a good story *for* Ace. The character's written as rather a stroppy kid. She, and the Seventh Doctor, wouldn't acquire any real flair until the following year.

You're right though, the novelty value of a character turning up is enough to make it watchable. It's the only reason people watch Time & The Rani. :P

  • @Grafferty : Dragonfire was the viewers choice story for the 7th Doctor, that's why it got the focus - it was shown after this mini-documentary.

  • @Darren79 I don't mind it but they should of chosen rememberence of the daleks or curse of fenric

  • @Grafferty The viewers had voted for it to be screened....yeah, I'm baffled by the decision too

  • @Grafferty True, but it was still the best best story from McCoy's first season.

  • The 7th doctor was the best imo, ACE IS AMAZING!!! BEST COMPANION!!

    I love season 24, so camp :p

  • I love Ace! She was one of my favorite companions.

  • There are such better examples of the McCoy era. "Curse of Fenric" or "Survival" would have been so much more interesting.

  • lol, he did the wink

  • surely the only reason dragonfire topped was either a whole load of anti mccoy fans voted a bad one on purpose.

or there was no voted and uk gold were just going for the stereotype of the last years being bad.

final theory i read on wikipedia that dragonfire when i came out was genuinly hailed as brillient

eitherway i can't comment as i haven't seen it but i loved Mccoy in Curse of Fenric, battlefield, Rememberance, survivial and ghostlight but had heard drogonfire wasn't that good

  • Dragonfire is not that great, but the last two minutes of the episode when Ace turns up is fantastic, you feel he has just turned into the darker character he is known for.

It is certainly a turning point!

  • Stories such as The Curse Of Fenric,Silver Nemesis, & Remberance Of The Daleks are all VASTLY superior to "Dragonfire" IMHO. Just shows that theres no accounting for taste!

  • Baker was phenomenal, but I like McCoy better.

  • Seriously, Dragonfly was voted his best episode? Good grief!

  • I'm not the prrrrrofessor, im the Doctorrrr!

  • OCH!!

  • true

  • Your wrong. 5 is the best, 9 is up great, 10 is a little overrated but still very good.

  • you have not even seen Doc11 yet.

    how can you judge ?

  • but still.

  • its hardy an opion till you see him as the doctor on tv

  • yep Im sure that will effect how Matt Smiths Doctor will be

  • not much improves in 6 miniuets.

  • LOL!

  • Sylve is my favorite. In my opinion, Tennant is the worst. But we're not here to discuss opinions... are we? I don't know... Meh...

Sylvester was funny and yet could be so mystifyingly secretive at the same time, it was spooky! I could watch Curse of Fenric over and over again.

  • 07:21 HAHAHA! XD

  • sophie aldred's bits keep getting mirrored! That wart on her chin swaps sides!

  • "I married her every night, then twice on saturdays". I love Sylvester.

  • I thought what they were trying to do was get back to the way it was with Patrick throughton and Frazier Hines ( the second doctor and Jamie) thats what it seemed like

  • I love Sylvester, he's my absolute fav. I don't care what other people , he was dark and silly and humourous, just brilliant.

  • Love the McCoy era. Can't beat Sylv and Soph.

  • He was good as a dark, quirky doctor - though as they admit this didn't really show until the end. And, as with many episodes of Doctor Who, his time was damaged by bad editing. The story seemed to be second place at times in their vision of the show, which spoilt any new portrayal of the doctor.

  • Nah arse, that's just your reflection

  • way hey!

  • sylvester is the beast ever classic dr

  • I be honest that era and colins were C***

as they didnt have decent plots , peter d's era was ok , tom baker was ace and the best even my brother liked him and he hates dr who

(sorry but not everyone likes dr who) ax

  • Is it just me or was there some sexual chemistry between the Doctor and Ace..

  • I love the seventh doctor and ace! i grew up watching them! Ace rules! so pretty too!

  • Did anyone else have a bit of a thing for ace? I never thought much of her characters outfit, but I remember her in her bathrobe with wet hair in survivor and thinking how cute she was. yummo! lol

  • That was in Remembrace not survival

  • Remembrance of the Daleks and Curse of Fenric are mccoy's two best.

  • I agree 100%.

  • His two best stories for me were Battlefield and curse of Fenrick. The dalek story was also great as I remember it from when I was 6. Before Sky TV it was a really big deal!

  • I dont mind McCoy. But I think Adrew Cartmel is a bit of a smug dickhead. He really does think his era was the best ever. He just cant except that he made any mistakes.

  • mccoy was great,a little of all the doctors, and buster keaton.

  • the guy at 3:58 looks like a younger mccoy.

  • i liked his last two years, the first was awful butthe last two years were up there with the very best of dr who, barring the blunder that was happyness patrol it never really worked.

  • "i liked his last two years" I liked the second to last year but just watched the last year. I thought Survival was awful.

  • Unfortunately, poor old JNT may have had more than a little to do with the ineffectiveness of "Survival." He's the one who insisted on the Cheetah costumes to be as fluffy as they were.

Too bad he didn't seem to watch old movies such as "Cat People." Then he would have known the less one sees of such monsters, the more effective they can be.

Still, if it weren't for JNT, "Who" may not have lasted as long as it did. (Nobody else wanted to produce it.)

  • Sylvester introduced a number of interesting aspects to the character. One was his ability to control people through suggestion, and through his powerful voice.

  • he learned it from the master.

  • what year was this in?

  • This documentary? 2003

  • Go Percy!

  • Without doubt the most underrated Doctor ever to take the part.

  • underrated? but wasnt he like voted favourite doctor once (tipping tom baker just that once)?

i though he was suppsoed to have been quite liked...

  • He is the BEST Doctor! There's no thirteen ways about it!

  • Ace!

  • i love slyvester! my fav doctor and my 1st doctor was acherly ecalson! go slyvester! go jon pertwee! go peter davidson! and go mel,ace and ADRIC!!!!! WOOT!

  • what's the piece of music being played at 7:55 called?

  • That's me too!! I'm gay and I love Doctor Who. I would guess the show does have a big gay following even though its a family show. My boyfriend Chris looks a bit like David Tennant! Sylvestor's one of my fave Doctor's and Ace is well, Ace, Lol!!

  • I'm not homophobic I just wanted to see who would take the bait and respond.

  • NO!

  • Andrew Cartmel is like a younger Mike Reid

  • Davison and McCoy are the best doctors!Ace is best assistant!

  • If you look past the camp, The Happiness Patrol has a much darker theme. Delta and the Bannermen is a fun throwback to 50s' monster movies and it's one of my favorite episodes. The show can't be dark and dreary all the time.

  • Yes, Battlefield and probably Curse of Frenic were the best of the Mccoy era. Battlefield's monster the destroyer was excellent especially for the time that it was made and it looks like something that could be in the new series.

  • i liked remembrance of the daleks

  • Love K-9 at the beginning.

  • "Here's your favorite episode of the era, sorry it's so bad!"

I'm guessing the people they polled never watched the 7th Doctor and picked Dragonfire for its cool name.

  • Dragonfire was utter bollocks. My fave story was Paradise Towers, it gives the guest stars alot of gr8 stuff to do (He's a cowardly cutlet!) The lousy FX in PT are almost pardonable just for the way the supporting cast is developed (well except Richard Briers)

  • Dragonfire was the viewers choice obviously as at the time, it wasn't out on DVD Remembrance was and Curse had just come out) and as one of the earliest McCoy video releases it wasn't as obtainable as the others. It's not about best story - it's about what was wanted to be seen at the time.

  • i liked drangonfire but its not the best(well i wouldn't have voted 4 it) it should have been ghost light or remeberance

  • That always bothered me - why Dragonfire and not Curse of Fenric, or Rememberence, or, well, anything else, really? Perhaps one of those stories *did* win, but the BBC at the time was thinking "if people think the show was actually GOOD near the end, we'll look silly for cancelling it, so..."

  • Delta and the Bannermen and The Happiness Patrol were the absolute worst, with Delta being the worst. It was f---in' embarrassing.

  • from i've seen of the happiness patrol its extremely camp. monster made of liqourice allsorts, pink tardis. come on.

  • It is extremely campy and overly silly. Delta is worse, though. Worse than Hartnell's The Gunfighters.

  • they probobly only chose dragonfire because of the companion switch

  • Happiness Patrol was utter rubbish. I think my favorite one was actually Battlefield.

  • Yes...

  • Dragonfire? Dragonfire! Where's Remembrence of the Daleks? Silver Nemesis? Curse of Fenric? Ghost Light? I think that Dragonfire may be the worst of the 7th Doctors stories.

  • what about the hapieness patrolpatrol? WORST EPISODE EVER!

  • Nah, my worst story has to go to Delta and Bannen Men. The whole thing was rather bad and a waste of Sylv.

  • Dear god, dragonfire was awful!

  • I am surprised that Dragonfire was voted. I would have liked to have seen Fenric instead.

  • Totally, Ghostlight or Fenric...not the painfully plastic Iceworld!
