You worked hard to get every note. You nailed it. What an inspired Paul was/is. I thought this was the collest sounding thing Id ever heard on a bass up till then
Of every bassist I've seen and heard so far you've really nailed it like a master. Screw "competitions and contests", that's all a lot of shit, it's seeing everybody doing their stuff however they can.
Even though I knew the song I listened to it at iTunes and didn't really hear how musical Paul McC was to play a bass line that early on before "virtuosity" became so prevalent. Well, you heard him and matched him.
Being a bass player (not me, you) you might appreciate the bass on the Yes song Roundabout. This Rain bassline is amazing once I heard you play it above the song, I never realized how nice it is.
@EoinLfc09 I'll explain it,originally, the song was recordered at this speed (the one in the video),but then they slowed it down, hence causing the official release to sound a semitone lower than this (the original take)
I always suspected the part was done with the Ric as the Hofner 500/1 doesn't tend to quite have the intonation for the job...and I realize that he was pictured as using the Hofner in the video of the song.
John Entwistle? Psh. For me, the competition has always been between our dear Paul McCartney and Jack Bruce, who is also a GENIUS. (Strange Brew, anyone?)
@zzaldoushuxleyzz - This is the tempo the rhythm track was originally recorded. It was 'slowed down' to create a different feel/sound than if it was recorded straight. Check out google - they did it on a number of tracks. I think they called it varispeed or something.
Great job! I love the sound of your set up and love the Rickenbacher. I miss the sound of those particular guitars and wish more people would use them. Thanks for posting.
Great job - but just for the record - this is not a "fast" backing track. It is recorded at the wrong speed - the entire song is a half tone off - readily apparant if you play along on a keyboard. It plays at Ab rather than G.
Other than that, let me say that McCartney was (is) a great bassist because his bass line were as melodic as his songs. Prior to McCartney, bassist provide a very basic bassline...in the basement.....basically....um, .. yea...
@garyokee it'l be on vinyl, they tend to play half a tone up if the belts tighten on the player, still nice i just learnt it of him but ill drop it down to g, im not been a bitch there bro , just a bit banter, stay cool !
@garyokee it'l be on vinyl, they tend to play half a tone up if the belts tighten on the player, still nice i just learnt it of him but ill drop it down to g, im not been a bitch there bro , just a bit banter, stay cool !
God bless the guy who made this video. I've always been a HUGE Beatles fan, and this is one of my favorite bass lines ever! Once I saw the late, great John Entwistle perform this song on a Beatles tribute tour, and although it was awsome, it still wasn't as close to the original as what this guy was able to pull off. Cudos indeed...
what many don't know this is one of the first songs used that Paul ditched his Hofner and used his Rickenbaker for. It wouldn't be until the Get Back sessions that Paul pulled his original Hofner out, only for it to be stolen
you have to listen to ringo more carefully :) sometimes you just lose the rhythm groove, not only on this video, so this seems to be your common problem.
Actually, like you probably know, this isn't the speed it was recorded at, it was recorded at a speed 40 % faster than the finished version, both Pauls bass and Ringos drums, so both of them did those carzy bass and drum patterns at breakneck speed.
The Beatles played the rhythm track really fast so that when the tape was played back at normal speed everything would be so much slower, changing the texture. If we'd recorded it at normal speed and then had to slow the tape down whenever we wanted to hear a playback it would have been much more work.
I think the guitars are also speed up, but i'm not sure about that, but the sound they have could imply the effect of slowing it down.
They recorded the rhythm track of Rain at a fast tempo, then slowed the tape down so the song was a tone lower.
and Paul said:
The drums became a giant drum kit... We got a big, ponderous, thunderous backing and then we worked on top of that as normal, so that it didn't sound like a slowed-down thing, it just had a big ominous noise to it. It was nice, I really enjoyed that one.
Myself and a group of musician freinds recently started a band and this is one of the songs we play . As the bass player I was asked if I could play this song, I had to play it about 30 times before nearly mastering it, IT AINT EASY !! A plus was when they discovered I own a Rickenbaker 4003 and I was told to use it for this song and all the other Beatles songs we play. I watched this vid several times to help learn the notes, thanks for posting this, you saved my ass!!!.
you sir are quite worthy to play that beautiful instrument. great cover (damn i wish i was that good) and i love the rick (can you like let me touch it some time?)
Rain was deffo played on the Ricky 4001s at Abbey Road when recorded (on a single track out of the 4 available). They used the Abbey Road "white elephant" speakers as a mike to record it via a Vox stack with a Fender head with a splash of Altec compression .
OOOO...A flat! Just looked! When I play it with people we jam in G, but because the originals treated with so much vari-speeding it's key is in between G and Gflat...right?
yeah, I think on the video you're talking about he's playing the hofner, but I just found out he might have been playing the rickenbacker on the recording, according to the wiki - if you can believe that.
we know at least he had the rick by then because he got it in '65.
It's funny, I can't tell the difference that much. I can usually tell if it's a rickenbacker, but not on beatles recordings.
anyone who dislikes this probably has a problem with the song not the cover. they still don't know what music is. i personally love this song and think it is really fun to play, but in all seriousness this is the best cover i've ever herd and you are amazing.
Finally, Paul had his bass plugged into the deck instead of trying to record it via amp. This song and Paperback Writer were the very 1st two singles you could hear McCartney's skill. Thanks for playing here!
One critisim though which isn't anything to do with your playing. I tend to disagree with you regarding the original speed of this track. I can't believe for one moment that they wrote that song in a flat key (Ab). They wrote it in G, so I think that the version that you're playing along to is too fast.
I find that when my bass is perfectly in tune I can't get the exact same notes as the final version however if I play this version the notes are the exactly same.
I've always loved the bass to this, it's my favorite bass line of any Beatles song, of any song really. And I've always loved the bass part at around 1:13, just how it sounds, it sounds so.. fluid like, you know? Like Paul's fingers just move over the strings like water, so effortlessly. Fantastic.
I suspect, although I may be wrong... That the original release is the correct speed as that's in the key of G, where this version is in G#... I can't for the life of me imagine John Lennon writing a song in a sharp key, you can also hear quite obviously that the guitars are playing open notes. Anyway, excellent playing and lovely bass.....
@bettsaj What you say makes sense, BUT, all sources say the song was played faster than what we hear on record, then slowed down for the vocals. They felt this would give a different texture to the music, which it did. Another example of their genius at trying different things.
You nailed it! Nice Rick, by the way. The best sounding bass of all time, even better than Fender Precision or Jazz Master IMO. McCartney's bass figures from '66 on were superb, once they figured out how to bring them up in the mix and record them after the basic backing track was finished.
Seriously - outstanding job, man. Thought I play this song really well. You kick ass. Your Rickenbacker is amazing, too. I like my Fender Jazz Master a lot, but...holy shit. Don't know what else to write. Way to go!
why don't you use your 2 fingers to pull the snares? awesome cover though

I apologize if that made no sense at all. I'm pretty fuckin' high right now.

I love this song, I love this video. Hearing John Entwistle play bass on Rain on the A Walk Down Abbey Road tour (2001) was also amazing.

Great job. Thanks for finding the original speed version of the backing track. I had not heard it before.

Simply BRILLIANT playing (and tone) !!

Way to go!
