  • why don't you use your 2 fingers to pull the snares? awesome cover though

  • Rickenbacker's instruments sure look great.

  • Dude, what strings are you using? Are they Pyramids??

  • Whoa!! Hold on this is so cool, I really enjoyed this Bass line. Love it. Peace and Love .

  • Bravo!!

    格好良いね。

  • very nice...keep it up!!!!

  • You worked hard to get every note. You nailed it. What an inspired Paul was/is. I thought this was the collest sounding thing Id ever heard on a bass up till then

  • juicy bassline

  • this song is such an accomplishment when you can play it after days of practice :)

  • Of every bassist I've seen and heard so far you've really nailed it like a master. Screw "competitions and contests", that's all a lot of shit, it's seeing everybody doing their stuff however they can.

Even though I knew the song I listened to it at iTunes and didn't really hear how musical Paul McC was to play a bass line that early on before "virtuosity" became so prevalent. Well, you heard him and matched him.

    Fantastic!

  • Being a bass player (not me, you) you might appreciate the bass on the Yes song Roundabout. This Rain bassline is amazing once I heard you play it above the song, I never realized how nice it is.

  • 4001 or 4003?

  • @Romazio7 4003, the 4001 has a horseshoe pickup on the neck, this one doesn't, i forgot what the pickup on this model is called

  • is there anyway you could post this without the background music, and just leave the bass track you play?

  • Superb my friend, amazing talent you have good luck

  • Paul McCartney = simply the God of Bass

  • oh my god ------- thanks kid, I grew up with these guys, this is awe some !!!!! nice, I am not a bass player but dammmmmmm, THANKS for this !!

  • great job! ;)

  • great job!

  • is this a semitone higher?

  • @EoinLfc09 I'll explain it,originally, the song was recordered at this speed (the one in the video),but then they slowed it down, hence causing the official release to sound a semitone lower than this (the original take)

  • @rocconrollo ahh fair enough

  • One of my favorite bass parts very artfully done.

    Bravo!!

I always suspected the part was done with the Ric as the Hofner 500/1 doesn't tend to quite have the intonation for the job...and I realize that he was pictured as using the Hofner in the video of the song.

    Very well done, Man!

  • I never ever tried to think about who's the best bassist.

I just pick them all and listen and learn and play.

Everyone that plays and played bass was great for me. :D

  • Just a magnificent job and performed seemingly effortlessly!

  • John Entwistle? Psh. For me, the competition has always been between our dear Paul McCartney and Jack Bruce, who is also a GENIUS. (Strange Brew, anyone?)

  • THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL SPEED! IT IS TOO FAST!

  • @zzaldoushuxleyzz what's your point?

  • @zzaldoushuxleyzz - This is the tempo the rhythm track was originally recorded. It was 'slowed down' to create a different feel/sound than if it was recorded straight. Check out google - they did it on a number of tracks. I think they called it varispeed or something.

  • Extremely good! Love all the McCartney-isms, you've really got that down to a tee.

  • Very cool! I love it!

  • Paul didn't put any bass on that song til it was slowed down.

  • @itchycabbage

Yeh I love the bass too..and the guitars..and the voices..and the drumming :)

  • Great job! I love the sound of your set up and love the Rickenbacher. I miss the sound of those particular guitars and wish more people would use them. Thanks for posting.

  • The guitar on this song was super simple, so apparently Paul decided to spice up the bass line. He did a good thing. You covered it quite well.

  • I"ll never tire of the fab four! Most influencial rock band of all time!

  • I just got a Rickenbacker 4001c64 in Fireglow red.

Sweet bass. I can't put it down. I am very lucky.

  • incredible, loved it thank you, Ram on, Joe.

  • I love that bass

  • You, dellawellsoulmusic, bassowman, and Infusion26 are the best McCartney interpreters I've heard on YT.

  • I have heard many people attempt this bass part and by far, you are among most accurate, especially playing it at the original pitch.

  • You are worth of that bass guitar, man! :)

  • man that bass guitar is beautiful

  • Fucking Awesome !

  • Best bass cover on the internet

  • Nice job, very nice. Great flatwound Ric sound.

  • You play very smoothly. Great bass playing, you couldn't get any better!

  • Your playing on that Ric and this song's bass line make me feel unworthy.

  • Great job - but just for the record - this is not a "fast" backing track. It is recorded at the wrong speed - the entire song is a half tone off - readily apparant if you play along on a keyboard. It plays at Ab rather than G.

Other than that, let me say that McCartney was (is) a great bassist because his bass line were as melodic as his songs. Prior to McCartney, bassist provide a very basic bassline...in the basement.....basically....um, .. yea...

  • @garyokee it'l be on vinyl, they tend to play half a tone up if the belts tighten on the player, still nice i just learnt it of him but ill drop it down to g, im not been a bitch there bro , just a bit banter, stay cool !

  • @garyokee it'l be on vinyl, they tend to play half a tone up if the belts tighten on the player, still nice i just learnt it of him but ill drop it down to g, im not been a bitch there bro , just a bit banter, stay cool !

  • great job!

  • Dude you're amazing.

  • That is such a lovely Bass guitar, Ricks Rock !

  • this sounds enjoyable

  • cool and sweet ric. I enjoyed it .

  • so nice I think i'll listen twice

  • Very nice. You must have listened to McCartney for hours. Fun stuff; watching the Riki working out, man. Thanks for sharing.

  • God bless the guy who made this video. I've always been a HUGE Beatles fan, and this is one of my favorite bass lines ever! Once I saw the late, great John Entwistle perform this song on a Beatles tribute tour, and although it was awsome, it still wasn't as close to the original as what this guy was able to pull off. Cudos indeed...

  • Cudos to the guy in this vid! Paul's bass playing is a hard act to follow.

  • what many don't know this is one of the first songs used that Paul ditched his Hofner and used his Rickenbaker for. It wouldn't be until the Get Back sessions that Paul pulled his original Hofner out, only for it to be stolen

  • It's not a competition. John Entwistle and Paul McCartney are both great bassplayers - just enjoy the music

  • @8ittermand True

  • Great job 325!

  • Great rendition. Was the original that fast though? I think it sounds great this fast.

  • Nice!!! McCartney would be proud.

  • you have to listen to ringo more carefully :) sometimes you just lose the rhythm groove, not only on this video, so this seems to be your common problem.

  • @zGollum If you could do better lets hear it. This guys nails it. Get your hearing checked.

  • Great bass players?? :... 3.- John Entwistle, 2.- John Deacon, 1.- Paul McCartney and this guy!! Greetings from Mexico

  • I just realized the fret markers on the necks are different.

  • Hey 325C58,

Great playing man. I've seen a 4001S and a 4003 and they look the same. Which is it?

  • Oh Paul! Such an amazing bassist! No one will ever replace him. You sure did an awesome job doing his amazing bassline.

  • do i see a sgt peppers poster in your room?

  • Seriously, your bass playing is absolutely awesome. A stellar performance!

  • VERY impressive!! You'd make Paul proud!! PERFECT!!

  • Good man, you definitely held your own!

  • incredible , as a bass player i look up to you!

  • really really good!!!!

  • I had as much fun as you did!

  • Actually, like you probably know, this isn't the speed it was recorded at, it was recorded at a speed 40 % faster than the finished version, both Pauls bass and Ringos drums, so both of them did those carzy bass and drum patterns at breakneck speed.

  • @OropherThranduil Is that true? I didn't think I could be any more impressed!

  • @IzzyWizzy1982

    Geoff Emmerick (their audio engineer):

The Beatles played the rhythm track really fast so that when the tape was played back at normal speed everything would be so much slower, changing the texture. If we'd recorded it at normal speed and then had to slow the tape down whenever we wanted to hear a playback it would have been much more work.

I think the guitars are also speed up, but i'm not sure about that, but the sound they have could imply the effect of slowing it down.

  • @IzzyWizzy1982

They recorded the rhythm track of Rain at a fast tempo, then slowed the tape down so the song was a tone lower.

    and Paul said:

The drums became a giant drum kit... We got a big, ponderous, thunderous backing and then we worked on top of that as normal, so that it didn't sound like a slowed-down thing, it just had a big ominous noise to it. It was nice, I really enjoyed that one.

those quotes are directly from the beatles bible.

  • Paul McCartney is the greatest bass player of all time, nobody will change my mind on that.

  • @westftballstar31 that's exactly what i thought, until i heard John Entwistle of The Who

  • @westftballstar31 Paul is amazing but John Entwistle blows my mind

  • @MrLennon231 boo

  • @hiphopsucks96 Come on! Paul I think is the 2nd best! Listen to My Generation by the who if you haven't already

  • @westftballstar31 i agree he wasnt flashy or show-offy but his stuff always fit the song perfectly and unfortunatly went unnoticed a lot

  • @westftballstar31 flee from chilli peppers is sometimes my favorite

  • @lukefenderrhodes

    Flea, not flee.

  • Paul's bass = devastating it has devastated you!

  • how much was that bass

  • Was he doing sweeps on a bass?!?! I worship you now!!!

  • Splendid!

    Is that Walnut or Autumnglo?

  • can i have that bass?

  • Wes, you are wonderful here.. this incredible tone!!!... by a Rickenbackerist...

    Great!!!

    Ric.

  • beautiful basssssssssssssssss

  • How cool is that?

2:22 would be hard to play even on the guitar!

  • Great playing.

And I still believe that this was Ringo's best track too.

  • That was note for note perfect. Amazing!!

  • Fantastic!

  • Lovely playing. Love the Rickenbacker. Wish you were in my band.

  • Myself and a group of musician freinds recently started a band and this is one of the songs we play . As the bass player I was asked if I could play this song, I had to play it about 30 times before nearly mastering it, IT AINT EASY !! A plus was when they discovered I own a Rickenbaker 4003 and I was told to use it for this song and all the other Beatles songs we play. I watched this vid several times to help learn the notes, thanks for posting this, you saved my ass!!!.

  • How the fcuk could anyone dislike this?

  • @325C58 How did you learn this? (with all the details)

  • Wow i love that rickenbacker sound

  • you sir are quite worthy to play that beautiful instrument. great cover (damn i wish i was that good) and i love the rick (can you like let me touch it some time?)

  • WOW that was great can you give me the Tabs of chords PLEASE

  • I hope you have an even batter bass guitar now...

  • awesome!

  • Sweet.

  • dammmmn paul is sick. you played it great man!

  • Rain was deffo played on the Ricky 4001s at Abbey Road when recorded (on a single track out of the 4 available). They used the Abbey Road "white elephant" speakers as a mike to record it via a Vox stack with a Fender head with a splash of Altec compression .

  • This is my favorite Beatles bass line.

  • You messed up the signature fill of the song. 2:22. Let's see you do it lefty.

  • What a bass lick at 1.14!!

  • OOOO...A flat! Just looked! When I play it with people we jam in G, but because the originals treated with so much vari-speeding it's key is in between G and Gflat...right?

    Either way, so cool!

  • Awesome. Every fill is right on. This thing in A sounds cool!!!

  • What kind of flats are on the ric? Thanks.

  • so cleeeeeeeeeaaaaannn

  • Almost every song Paul Mccartney has played bass on has a amazing creative bass playing..

  • very very awesome! SUBSCRIBE!

  • awesome man, beatiful bass as well!

  • did he use the hofner or the Rick for this one?

  • @cciemail höfner I think , he only uses his rickenbacker in and after sgt. peppers

  • @cciemail I never seen him playing with Rickenbracker on this song and Paperback Writer.

  • @cciemail

yeah, I think on the video you're talking about he's playing the hofner, but I just found out he might have been playing the rickenbacker on the recording, according to the wiki - if you can believe that.

we know at least he had the rick by then because he got it in '65.

It's funny, I can't tell the difference that much. I can usually tell if it's a rickenbacker, but not on beatles recordings.

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!! What are you using for strings on that 4003? What about amplification? Tone??? U NAILED IT SIR!!

  • Yesss I Like It

  • amazing work! paul's bass + ringo's drums really drive that song forward!

  • god has truly blessed us all with both this wonderful song and cover..

i hope one day people will begin to see what music trully is...

  • anyone who dislikes this probably has a problem with the song not the cover. they still don't know what music is. i personally love this song and think it is really fun to play, but in all seriousness this is the best cover i've ever herd and you are amazing.

  • is bass more easier to learn as compared to lead guitar? thanks.

  • Yeh McCartney almost never wrote a "simple" low-key bass track during the Beatles.

"Hey Bulldog" is one of the best bass-tracks he has ever written in my opinion.

  • toca bien el pingo este...

  • superb!

  • who would dislike this, this guy is awesome great job my friend

  • Gear !

  • Gear!

  • @sgtelzilcho i think they slowed the bass on this song. i have the same problem

  • Finally, Paul had his bass plugged into the deck instead of trying to record it via amp. This song and Paperback Writer were the very 1st two singles you could hear McCartney's skill. Thanks for playing here!

  • Hola, tu ejecucion es impecable...¡Perfecta!

  • how is it even possible that somebody does NOT like this? I've been playing bass for 25 years semi professionally and I LOVE it. You sir have a gift.

  • rickenbacker...lucky bastard

    awesome cover btw

  • Good work friend, ..McCartney was'nt your average bassplayer thats forsure.

  • Awesome!

  • really really good playing.

One critisim though which isn't anything to do with your playing. I tend to disagree with you regarding the original speed of this track. I can't believe for one moment that they wrote that song in a flat key (Ab). They wrote it in G, so I think that the version that you're playing along to is too fast.

  • @bettsaj I went and listened to the actual song, and he plays the exact same speed as Paul did in the song.

  • @bettsaj

I find that when my bass is perfectly in tune I can't get the exact same notes as the final version however if I play this version the notes are the exactly same.

  • its such an amazing bass part :)

  • I've always loved the bass to this, it's my favorite bass line of any Beatles song, of any song really. And I've always loved the bass part at around 1:13, just how it sounds, it sounds so.. fluid like, you know? Like Paul's fingers just move over the strings like water, so effortlessly. Fantastic.

  • Nice job dude!

  • NICEEEE COOVER!!! Te sale identico al bajo original.

pero, ¿es esa la velocida? la verdad esque encuentro que esta un poco aumentada. Quizas sea otra version. Exelente Cover. Saludos from Chile

  • What is amazing about The Beatles, all the screaming and mania was justified everytime they released a new record. Best Band Ever!

  • Comment removed

  • Who are the idiots who dislike this? Boggles my mind that anyone would click thumbs down. Whoever you are 325C58, you are an excellent bass player!

  • Love the song Rain. The first recording in the 60's (with Paperback Writer) with fat-ass bass. Mccartney is GOD!!

I am saving up for a bass like this.

  • I liked this after 9 seconds

  • great performance brah! and that bass! you really know how to make it "hoof" in one's ears just as easily as the color "screams" at one's eyes!

I apologize if that made no sense at all. I'm pretty fuckin' high right now.

  • Epic. Plus your so lucky too have such a very sexy, expensive bass

  • i love it

  • Wow you're a REALLY good bassist, and thats a really great looking guitar

  • I've always loved the bass line of this song! Awesome job!!

  • I love this song, I love this video. Hearing John Entwistle play bass on Rain on the A Walk Down Abbey Road tour (2001) was also amazing.

  • Great bass playing!!! You nailed it!

  • Great job. Thanks for finding the original speed version of the backing track. I had not heard it before.

  • I suspect, although I may be wrong... That the original release is the correct speed as that's in the key of G, where this version is in G#... I can't for the life of me imagine John Lennon writing a song in a sharp key, you can also hear quite obviously that the guitars are playing open notes. Anyway, excellent playing and lovely bass.....

  • @bettsaj What you say makes sense, BUT, all sources say the song was played faster than what we hear on record, then slowed down for the vocals. They felt this would give a different texture to the music, which it did. Another example of their genius at trying different things.

  • Simply BRILLIANT playing (and tone) !!

  • You nailed it! Nice Rick, by the way. The best sounding bass of all time, even better than Fender Precision or Jazz Master IMO. McCartney's bass figures from '66 on were superb, once they figured out how to bring them up in the mix and record them after the basic backing track was finished.

  • You killed it! Awesome job !!!!

  • Seriously - outstanding job, man. Thought I play this song really well. You kick ass. Your Rickenbacker is amazing, too. I like my Fender Jazz Master a lot, but...holy shit. Don't know what else to write. Way to go!

  • That was great, and that Rickenbacker has me drooling with envy!

  • that was extremley good, nice job man
