@SavHub That's not really a valid argument, you should know. If we take number of views, Justin Bieber has more than all of Angela's videos put together. Now, as to interpretation, it is subjective. I prefer Callas personally, but I still love Gheorghiu.

Angela is devine and the best. Now the case is closed!
I can understand why Tebaldi is one of the greatest. But i will never understand why Callas should be considered that good. For me Callas sounds like a better crossover singer.
I like the subtitles. It's nice to finally understand the meaning of the words. I never understood the lyrics until now, but intuitively I knew it was a sad song.
Sarah Brightman knocks this one out of the park. She gives it the emotion and drama this piece demands. While this singer has a much stronger voice than Sarah she seems to rush through it and it just seems to fall a bit flat...for me anyway.
@anubis1974 Sarah Brightman and Angela Gheorghiu dont go in the same category, besides she doesnt control the speed as the conductor seems to have too big an ego to let her show any emotion. She is the biggest star on the opera stage. Sarah Brightman is known for Musicals, two different things, and its not flat!
@eliaschcjs I still think Sarah does a better job on this one song. Just give it a listen, i'm sure its on here, I think you'll agree that she does a pretty bang-up job on it, opera singer or not. It is just a song after all and both Angela and Sarah are just singers. Angie I'm sure could sing circles around Sarah on every other opera song out there, but not this one. Give it a fair listen and then listen to this chick again...you'll see:)
@anubis1974 really?, I listened and I still disagree. listen to all the old opera stars who sing this- Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Monserrat Caballe, Kiri te Kanawa etc. even some of today's. Im an opera singer so I know the difference, yes her rendition might be emotional but with Angela I dont have to try to listen to find it, it just comes out, even though the conductor is irritating ego
@anubis1974 calling this a song...that says enough about your expertise. Opera arias are parts of operas, which means that the singer has to be able to sing the whole role, with all it's demands, without a microphone over a huge orchestra. Sarah Brightman doesn't even have the right voicetype for this role. Operasinging is a trade.
@Pasunsoprano you're making mountains out of mole hills. they are just singers singing songs. lets not elevate it to something that's its not. its just a different form of singing. and an aria is just a song after all. this angie chick is not the jesus christ of opera...get over it!! I like Sarah Brigtmans version better...so what, i'm allowed to.
She looks and sounds pretty. She is doing a good job. However, no matter how beautifully she sings, her voice is a little bit too light for this aria. A lyric soprano like Gheorgiu can not create the impact this area offers as a spinto or a dramatic soprano does. Tebaldi and Dimitrova had the ideal voice. I wonder how Sondra Radvanovsky sings this aria.
Such a rich and beautiful voice .... PLEASE start singing Bel Canto roles. She has a voice that carries you away and makes you cry! Her Violetta is so powerful and moving. Love her!
The powerful way in which she hits the syllable "re-" at exactly minute 2 sends me to orgasm: check out 1:56 to 2:03 . She's just unbelievably great!!!
I didn't realize what a great voice she has - much bigger than I remember and her phrasing is more musical than many others. Sarah Brightman isn't even a leggiera, she's not even "legit"; she's completely unsupported and breathy. Just a pop singer without any basic understanding of the mechanics of singing and her phrasing is pathetic. She has no breath control. USA is the land of zero standards and no education or refinement.
@leslielandberg What in the world do your comments about Sarah Brightman have to do with the USA being "the land of zero standards and no education or refinement"? My understanding is that she is British. The UK is WAY smaller and a much more tight-knit community than the US and as such is much more demanding of its citizens to conform to certain standards. We have all kinds of
people here. I utterly resent your narrow-minded, uneducated opinion of us.
@49kasey Why do people when they express their opinions have to resort to the lowest of the low to insult countries etc, ? Everyone has their OWN opinions, and countries dont really have anything to do with it. This is a beautiful rendition, maybe a bit fast, she looks a bit uncomfortable at the beginning. Sarah Brightman is a classical singer, not an opera singer and therefore cant be compared, and Britain is not narrow-minded, they know the difference, and so do Americans too.
@tomek11aa sarah brightman....seriously?? i mean no doubt she's a great pop singer even a great Broadway musical type singer but that woman would be booed off a stage if she tried to sing in a real opera
Yes, we should cherish recordings of Callas, Tebaldi, Milanov, Ponselle, Price, etc. But this lady compares very well to all the greats. One day we shall be glad she sang for us.
I love this aria! the first time i heard it Eva Marton sang it and it has been hard to find any performance like hers. I think its like the whole virginity concept. even though you have better, the first time always stands out.
Angela doesn´t shows was she is able in this register! She didn´t work enough in it even she knows to employ the "chest voice", the "cerebral voice" and other vocal technics we can hear in other registers. It´s a pity, but sometimes it happens.About La Wally, leave it ,or work it hard.
I just love Angela's version, She has such a wonderful voice... I love this aria, and her interpretation is amazing... I think it was good that she rushed the song... because that makes the climax at the end much more powerful...
ok POPOpera and Opera are 2 diffrent things but I do think sarah brightmans version of this is beautiful and one of my favorits, and la diva maria callas has the best real Opera version
She just rushed through the song......If she hadnt done that, it would have been interesting to see how she measures up against Callas. But to her credit, her interpretation seems as original as Callas, compared to any of the other versions out there.
@jewelmarkess Gheorghiu has excellent vocal range, acting and interpretive skills IMO. I was a fan before seeing her and her husband live at the Lyric in Chicago doing their early 1990's Romeo and Juliet....truly amazing performances and made me a lifelong fan. She's still going strong in her mid-40's and lovely as ever!
@Republicrat74 Are you replying to my post? Because I like Gheorghiu a lot, I think she is wonderful. I was replying to some guy who brought up Brightman, just told him (her) he cannot compare her to real opera singers like Gheorghiu.
@antoniobrajkovic1977 Yes, just look for the original comment I replied to. Someone always brings her up on videos of any popular soprano singing a popular aria.
I don't have enough technical knowledge of opera singing to know exactly how to describe it but the moment just before and after 2.37, where she switches from a deeper note to the higher note (singing '...lontana, come l'eco della pia campana..) is absolute magic. I accept that this aria perhaps should be taken a touch slower, overall, but that one moment makes this version for me.
if I see one more person compare a singer of today to Callas...I will vomit. It's like she has made it impossible for anyone to succeed these days. Lame. She had MAJOR flaws.
I agree. Callas had great qualities and should be remembered, but I hate that so many magnificent opera singers are attacked by those that are stuck in the past.
@nailycai This is true, but not only in music, but in sports, politics, theology, etc. It is well nigh impossible to compare the greats of different epochs....
soooo you just basically declared the art form dead. And I refuse to believe that opera is dead. I'll tell you who is dead, though...CALLAS. Leave her be and let her rest. Stop trying to bring her back. She contributed greatly to opera. Now let others take over and pay respect to her by exploring and growing in this ever-changing art form which she loved with her whole being.
@Lizzyjean5 Callas was the best dramatic performer of operatic repertoire in the 20th century. She had vocal flaws, but her performance of any given role is incomparable to today's sopranos.
up for debate. It is far too broad a statement to say "the best" when it comes to the performing arts. Callas had incredible performances of roles that have earned their place in the history books, but they ARE comparable to today's sopranos. Sopranos of today are dealing with a far more competitive world than the singers of the past dealt with and have to be far more technically sound in order to have a career. As a whole, they are better actresses, but not better than Callas.
I prefer it a little slower and with more depth, sadness and emotion you can feel in the core of your body and sole when listening to other versions of this aria.
A little bit speedy. Check out Netrebko, She holds the notes that much more and has a little more control overall. However we are in danger of splitting hairs as Gheorghiu is exceptional.
There are several great performances of this piece: Not that many actually, but in my mind, Callas and Tebaldi leave all the others way, way, way behind!
Beautiful voice, beautiful interpretation, Angela really nailed this one. I've listened several interpretations of this aria on Youtube, and I have to say Renata Tebaldi's and Angela's are my favorite.
Why did Angie have to say Callas sang something hysterically? Why Angie, did you say that? Are you getting frustrated with the Youtube comments, is that why?? Just come out and say why you said that bad thing against Maria. Callas' La Wally
is not of a human being. Angie and Anna know this in their hearts.
This is about my 20th time i've listened to this performance... i'm debating playing it again tonight or waiting till tomorrow.. don't want to overindulge !
Three currently performing and very different sopranos put me in the sort of delightful paradise that Sampson was in after his haircut. They are; Fleming, Dessay and Gheorgiu. It is so good to be alive!
I think she is an excellent soprano. She can go to all the venues where MARIA CALLAS sang. I can say that MARIA CALLAS would be the first one to encourage her and applaud her.
She sounds forced and awful - color of her voice not too beautiful - voice is too small for this aria - and her diction is awful - ordinary voice. go to Tebaldi or Callas. She lacked italian bites in her singing.

Since there is ever improving music recording technology, there is no such thing as being stuck in the past with opera singers.
Sheet music allowed composers of present and past to be compared all along.
Now we can have the same with singers. Thanks for the technology.
It, of course, means, that the standards will be higher and higher.
It is not to say we do not pay due respect to live singers.

I prefer Tebaldi/Callas for this aria - she is not very powerful singer -
Ordinary interpretation.
tebaldicallas 1 year ago
She, just like Callas, commands attention.
Never boring.
It is very nice.
True, Callas is the gold standard in this, as in many others.
Cannot improve on perfection.
It is not to say, I do not love Angela's superior art.

@liriango I´m sorry cerebral voice? what kind of concept is that? lol

I just love Angela's version, She has such a wonderful voice... I love this aria, and her interpretation is amazing... I think it was good that she rushed the song... because that makes the climax at the end much more powerful...

ok POPOpera and Opera are 2 diffrent things but I do think sarah brightmans version of this is beautiful and one of my favorits, and la diva maria callas has the best real Opera version
tissetatten 1 year ago
She just rushed through the song......If she hadnt done that, it would have been interesting to see how she measures up against Callas. But to her credit, her interpretation seems as original as Callas, compared to any of the other versions out there.

jewelmarkess 2 years ago 49
@jewelmarkess Gheorghiu has excellent vocal range, acting and interpretive skills IMO. I was a fan before seeing her and her husband live at the Lyric in Chicago doing their early 1990's Romeo and Juliet....truly amazing performances and made me a lifelong fan. She's still going strong in her mid-40's and lovely as ever!
Republicrat74 1 year ago
@Republicrat74 Are you replying to my post? Because I like Gheorghiu a lot, I think she is wonderful. I was replying to some guy who brought up Brightman, just told him (her) he cannot compare her to real opera singers like Gheorghiu.

did someone here mentioned sara brightman?!?! LMAO!!!!
antoniobrajkovic1977 1 year ago 2
@antoniobrajkovic1977 Yes, just look for the original comment I replied to. Someone always brings her up on videos of any popular soprano singing a popular aria.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
this is your opinion, for me and people who love opera it isnt
merlinfan1006 2 years ago
I don't have enough technical knowledge of opera singing to know exactly how to describe it but the moment just before and after 2.37, where she switches from a deeper note to the higher note (singing '...lontana, come l'eco della pia campana..) is absolute magic. I accept that this aria perhaps should be taken a touch slower, overall, but that one moment makes this version for me.

if I see one more person compare a singer of today to Callas...I will vomit. It's like she has made it impossible for anyone to succeed these days. Lame. She had MAJOR flaws.

I agree. Qué pesadas son las comparaciones. Y que obsesión en comparar con Callas. Es enfermizo.

I agree. Callas had great qualities and should be remembered, but I hate that so many magnificent opera singers are attacked by those that are stuck in the past.

that doesent matter, the flaws ppl canot do it better then her so they should jjust stop trying, and do there own versions..
tissetatten 1 year ago
soooo you just basically declared the art form dead.
Lizzyjean5 1 year ago 2
No, it's just that she set many standards.
Handelove 1 year ago
@Lizzyjean5 Callas was the best dramatic performer of operatic repertoire in the 20th century. She had vocal flaws, but her performance of any given role is incomparable to today's sopranos.
operaxige 11 months ago
@operaxige
up for debate.
Lizzyjean5 11 months ago
I prefer it a little slower and with more depth, sadness and emotion you can feel in the core of your body and sole when listening to other versions of this aria.
Aniasuesia 2 years ago 2
A little bit speedy. Check out Netrebko, She holds the notes that much more and has a little more control overall. However we are in danger of splitting hairs as Gheorghiu is exceptional.
munsterfloyd 2 years ago
Beautifully sung with wonderful tonal nuances (as I would expect from this artist) though I prefer the aria taken just a little slower.

There are several great performances of this piece: Not that many actually, but in my mind, Callas and Tebaldi leave all the others way, way, way behind!

musicofilonapoletano 2 years ago
Musicofilofilonapoletano,

musicofilonapoletano 2 years ago
ScusarLa?

If you just watch Angie on this video, without the sound, it is very irritating. She is over-dramatizing her roles, very repulsive.
mtnmanjt 2 years ago
Why did Angie have to say Callas sang something hysterically? Why Angie, did you say that? Are you getting frustrated with the Youtube comments, is that why?? Just come out and say why you said that bad thing against Maria. Callas' La Wally
is not of a human being. Angie and Anna know this in their hearts.
