Most bands seem terrible because they do so much editing in the sound booth. Any time you go to see a band live, don't expect the same sound from the album.

well, it also depends on a few more things. like the live sound techie, sometimes they suck. i know that personally (oddly enough i wanna be one after college). also, it depends on how many overdubs they did in the studio. Led Zep did so many guitar dubs that live, it sounds so different from the real thing.

If you want to be a technician just remember never to call them "techies". Maybe they do it differently here, but my technical theater teacher from Local 142 says that's a golden rule. If you at least do that where I live, you will be corrected and/or laughed at. Just an advisory point.

its true that some singers sound very different and sometimes bad live, but the singer is not the only thing that contributes to a band sounding different live.

recording studios and stages are completely different environments, there are a lot more factors
