Yo Abe It was great meeting and speaking with you at The Golden Door Film Fest in Jersey on Oct 16 2011. The film was spectacular with respect to the subject matter. I will eventually buy a copy. I did Video the Q&A after the viewing. If you would like me to send you the clips please private E Mail your address and I'll send you a DVD. On behalf of all the over age DooWoppers I know Thank You Steve Willette The Five Chancells Dawn Records 1965
@asdamusic I am Doowop... Class of 1959 Erasmus Hall High Brooklyn Sang in front of Nedicks lunch time... Cut three demos as Harold and the Figures for Capital in 58' BUT.The DVD is for my group who are much younger than I am and missed the whole experience. So this will be for them Hope it will give a better feel for the music..I see from the trailer that my friend Jimmy Mac is on the there... I wish the producers the very best of luck with the release... Rich K "the Fairlanes" Florida
Got my start singing on the street corners of NJ in the 60's, not far from Jersey City...and listening to the sounds of Time Square Records across the river in NYC....glad to see this musical period getting the attention it deserves.
Hey Abe, We're all out here waiting for the public release of the Doc and hope it won't put a hurtin' on the pocket. Here's an *****" Idea"*******:^) Discount to former group members from record labels released in the sixties. I knew you'd hate me for saying it but I haven't stopped singing in groups since my time in the Five Chancells. God knows I never took that City job my father said would set me up for life working at "How do I try to look like I'm working while actually doing nothing".
Music was much more satisfying. The Jaynells, The Bob Knight Four Times Square are a few groups I have been involved with. Have mercy on a poor singer who will never stop singing from his heart. We all thank you and your crew for telling the story of "Street Corner Harmony"(Buy The Book! Plug), on your corner, my corner(Eastchester Projects Bronx N.Y.) and everyones corner where some "Teenagers sang for the love of it and nothing More!" Steve Willette original member of The Five Chancells
Steve, congratulations. Enjoyed the trailor. I like how the singers expressed themselves and what they had to say. We can all relate, those of us who enjoyed the experience as teenagers. If you've never tasted pizza, how could you describe it. You couldn't, right? Only the street corner singers can really tell the story. Looking forward to the complete video in June !!!
Looks good so far, can't wait to see it in it's completed form. That's our baritone from Lola & The Saints, Jim McGreevey in his 50s room. Great Job, Jimmy Boy.
It's cool to see another acappella documentary. We, CHOICE, have been participating one that is also forthcoming, and can see yours is a different approach. Our genre needs this kind of thing. There must be countless documentaries and artist profiles in various styles of jazz, classical, opera, folk and more, but little on acappella, other than the Spike Lee joint. Hope you can shop it and it makes an impact.
Something to look forward to! Urban streetcorner music has always been marginalized and disregarded as an art form. Kudos on a project that serves to validate its rightful place in music history, and relevance today....btw, sun, smoking and red meat was always bad, but society was free from looming thoughts of death ;-)
Peace
