@AKSoapy29 I'm looking forward to seeing your fully working miniture thunderbolt that has the correct wind-up to wind-down ratio. Please post a video when you have it up and running.
@vanamonde2 I'm not saying I have one, I'm just stating my opinion that it is fairly acurate. I did how ever try building a very small electronic horn that I could use with an Arduino though. I was going to make an alarm clock, but I sort of scrapped that project. I'm not really good at building.
@AKSoapy29 They can go either way. Depends on how the motors are wired. The sirens with single phase rotator motors probably turn more of the same direction but if they have 3 phase rotators they can turn in either direction. I've never took the time to notice which direction they turn. When you say clockwise. Do you mean clockwise looking from the bottom or top?
I am a fan of the cold war and civil defense. I am making a movie and am trying to animate a thunder bolt turning around. I am using still pics from the web but there is not too many out there. If you could photograph your siren for me or video it looking up at sharp angle with a dark green poster board behind it. I could give you a movie credit for it. Contact me at joewars66 on youtube. Hope to hear from you. Thanks
@MiSirenChaser I didn't get a blueprint to make it. I just made it. I have a page about it on my site. See my channel page for my site address. The page is in the warning sirens section under mini thunderbolt project.
hey would you know where i could get one of the mini thunderbolts out where i live we cant hear the city's sirens and we have been having a lot of sever weather lately and i am tire of getting wet to go out and sound the siren on my car i am a firefighter
Love it! Sounds like it's big brother. It would be good to install one of those inside a school or small office building, in case you can't hear the ones outside.
@weaponeer Why? It's not like you would ever hear any sirens. I think only one of my neighbors has ever heard one of my sirens and that was because I told him I was about to run it. They can barely be heard just a couple of houses away and the only time I run them is when everyone else is at work during the day.
@vanamonde2 - as a disabled vet I'm home full time... lol we still use these in town here for fire and tornado alerts, so there can be heard for miles. I still would like to find one some day.. great part of history much like my CD 700, 715, 717, 720, and 750
I've been wanting to say this ever since I found the original Minibolt video... awesome, awesome work, man. Other than it spooling up a little slow and spooling down a little fast, it sounds exactly like the T-bolts I remember growing up with in Battle Creek. (I need to stop watching these videos quite so often, though... the dog just bit my ankle when I hit play! Think she's figured out what's hurting her ears...)
@sciortino1000 The chopper is made out of 6061 T6511 aluminum. I turned it on a lathe and milled the air holes on a mill with the chopper in an indexer.
@grindstone1 screw that. I woke up this morning to the simplex fire alarm system in our dorm for the first time. The half-whoop from that thing (mind you, electronic recording played over loudspeaker system) is a freaking CLOSE cousin to a civil defense siren. IN MY ROOM!!!!!!! I woke up to that. NOT COOL.
@grindstone1 But.....if he wanted to use it as a fire alarm or burglar alarm or something, I'm sure it'd be pretty effective. Mount it in the attic and hook it up to go off as needed, and just make sure through testing that it could be heard loudly throughout the house.
everyone im sure Eric is tired of the INSANE amount of questions.
anyway, nice job! the chopper sounds a bit draggy in this vid. i remember something about when you made the taken apart video that you did that to clean the collector rings.
its atleast good to know that the internal motor for the chopper will remain cool because of the air passing through the motor its self. how hard was it to do all the lathing and other machine work??
Actually the air coming out of the smog pump blower makes it hotter. The chopper motor is just a radio shack 12volt hobby motor it doesn't get hot running by itself.
thats really interesting to know that the smog pump blower would make the air hot. would there be any other ways of pushing out the air without the effect of it heating up? keeping it simple and compact like that would definitely keep people guessing.
you could probably wind your own solenoid coil, and make some dampers by cutting, and welding some sheet metal, and rod stock of some sort (if you have the equipment).
It's been permanently loaned to me by the City of Sherman Texas. I only got the horn/rotator part of the siren. It took me about 7 years to work the deal. The story is on my site. The link to my site is on my channel's main page.
That'd be pretty easy with a relay board and a small microcontroller, I'd imagine, but to wake up to one of these would be a nightmare...or a siren lover's dream.
